I am not sure if it was supposed to be hip hop instrumentals of which as stated above only Apache comes to mind (I am enjoying RZA's soundtrack to the Man with the Iron Fist). Or whether it is the the breaks between the lyrics, in either case it is good to see a celebration of all things hip hop/rap.

I would mention early hip hop queens, Salt and Pepper I'll take your man over a sample of Parliament's Flashlight.

I am surprised no one mentioned KRS1. Although their credibility is suspect these days early LL Cool J and early Snoop Dogg "Gin and Juice"

Wu Tang Clan has fallen off the list.

I would also mention DMX and RuffRyders. Onyx, and not forgetting Naughty by Nature.

But it is now a broad church of many styles.

I'm a bit confused, like Fabio was a couple of weeks ago.

"Instrumental" suggests no lyrics.

I'm guessing it means the samples/music behind the rapping though, but for truly instrumental hip-hop, I'm still hanging the drum for Endtroducing by DJ Shadow 20 years on.

There's spoken word samples at times, I guess, but no rapping as such. Made entirely from (credited) samples - it's genius stuff.

I love the instrumentation on Harder than you Think too Fabio - Shirley Bassey sample!

I love the J Dilla-Donuts mixtape. The tunes don't have titles as such, but the one that samples Dionne Warwick - You're going to Want Me is brilliant.

I also love Ms Fat Booty by Mos Def - samples a rather schmaltzy (but lovely) Aretha Franklin tune called One Step Ahead. It also contains the immortal line - "Ass so far, you could see it from the front"

"if we are going all classic.. how can no-one mention public enemy "fight the power"....

there are about 5 different versions of de la soul's "roller skating jam named saturday" i could listen to....

and if we are talking biggie... then the janet evans remix of "one more chance" is a classic...

It also contains the immortal line - "Ass so far, you could see it from the front" "

Best post so far, that Aretha track is beautiful

Essex

Most of these are awesome tracks, only a few are “instrumental” - my fav would be Herbie Hancock’s Rocket

Although U.N.K.L.E have some that almost qualify

“Guns Blazing - Drums of Death” and “an Eye for an Eye” are astonishingly good

Can I say the first “white label” I ever bought was the 900 number!! Classic!!!

2nd white label I bought was the really… really long version of “be faithful” by fatman scoop they could never get it cleared to commercially release
