Sometimes as many as all four and my thumb on my right hand. Yet only one and my thumb on my left hand.... but then I am usually holding my fag in my left hand as I type.

That's what my Mother could achieve too and she was 100$ accurate with spelling etc too.

I only wish I could have inherited that skill. I'm limited to using two fingers but cope fairly well.

But if I try to use three fingers or more, it all comes out resembling the Russian alphabet!

I use all of my fingers for typing. In my younger days I went on a secretarial course run by two older tyrants, who believed that nice ladies were secretaries and should look after their boss no matter what, and that meant skirts, blouse, low heeled shoes, very demure. They taught me to type, covering all the keys up with red stickers. My fingers used to slip down in between the spaces on the old typewriter I used. If I was caught looking down, then they would creep on at the side of me and shout "young lady" and Id jump a bloody mile.

They also taught shorthand and used to stand there reading out a paragraph and holding a large stopwatch. They really were quite terrifying. Both of them are probably dead now bless them. But they taught me well. I do not look at the keyboard, not even for numbers.

I took exams back in the dinosaur day when it was all manual typewriters and everything had to be exact. I gained an RSA 3 Typewriting qualification with distinction and a Pitman shorthand qualification at a speed of 150 words per minute. I havent forgotten any of it and still use shorthand, so much easier if I need to write down things that noone else can understand.

I do struggle with my Blackberry though. Because my fingers cant fit on the Qwerty keyboard properly I have no option but to look and because I have no idea where keys are, I have never looked, my fingers just do the talking I am very very slow at texting on it.

All of them. I did start using just one finger on each hand years ago but then just started practising not looking and taught myself.

It's very annoying when I get a new laptop or keyboard though!

Seeing what you've written mirrors how my Mother learnt her typing and shorthand skills. She was in the same mould as you, 150 wpm shorthand and around 100 wpm typing and all 100% accurately.

The strange thing was she developed her own style of shorthand over the years. For example, after she died 20 years ago, my father on clearing the house of her effects, found her recipe notebooks, virtually all of which were in shorthand. But try as he could, no-one could decipher them!

I often wonder how my Mother, if she was still alive today, would cope with modern PC systems etc?
