Those who have known me for a while know this whole girly thing is very new to me.A year ago i bought my first ever pair of high heels ,now i have a wardrobe full of corsets,12 pairs of shoes! and i am loving it.

i have also got into growing and painting my nails(after a lifetime of biting them ,yeh me)but recently they are flaky, the top layer comes of quite a few.

i never use false nails,do use handcream, does any one know why this is happening.Could it be a vitamin defficency,or filling them wrong?

Erm... the top layer of your nail comes off or the nail varnish?

"Ty on the shoes!

I stopped biting my nails aged 40 and I still have the same trouble.

Avons '24K gold strength nail expert' is brilliant and since I've been using it, not a flake, chip or break.

Failing Avon, a very good quality nail hardener will help.

Years of abuse with chewing and chomping mean that your nails are still very weak.

Hope that helps.

It is possible that you are short on vitamins and calcium.

Take some straight forward multivitamins every day for at least 3 months and see what happens.

To improve your calcium levels eat a lot more fruit and veg, a lot less meat and dairy products and get out in the sunshine every day for at least 10 mins. (Exposure on hands/arms and face is enough)

Oh you mean the tips break?

I was wondering about you and your flakey nails!! Weirdo!

I find that mine break if I file them square... I really like the look of square nails but I can't have them that way, I need them rounded at the tips for them not to break. You could try painting them with strengthening stuff... the diamond hard stuff from Boots works for me. You can get more expensive stuff, I have but I don't find it's any better.

I'm sure there's probably vitamins you can take to help and someone told me that eating a cube of raw jelly a day helped but I don't know how much truth is in that.

It means your nails are in bad condition. Could be due to the fact that youve just stopped biting them. Also they can be worse if your a smoker. Im having the same problem with mine. 4 months since ive stopped biting mine and its just started to get less. Had two manicures now she said could take up to a year, plus they will be a bit discoloured cause i smoke. I was also told not to cut them just file them.

You can get a hair, skin and nail vitamin supplement from Boots and that worked wonders for mine x

You haven't been using any experimental teleportation units have you?

Only in The Fly, he did and all his finger nails fell out amongst other bits n bobs.

Thank you all for some great advice!

It makes sense that they will take time to recover, i will get some hardener(stop sniggering at the back) and perhaps look into multi vitamins.

Funky i had to sell the transportation device when i got the restraining order,it seemed angeina joie didn't like haring bath time!

I stopped biting mine 21 yrs ago, and i still get flaky tips! And sometimes just as im getting them all the same length one goes and breaks quickly followed by the other 9!

In fact it happened tooday, so i went off to buy some false ones to hide them for now! And now i cant use my phone to text!!

.

I've had acrylic nails for years and have a mobile where I can use them on the touch sreen rather than the stylus provided.

Only prob is none of the phones now allow this, so looks like I'm gonna have to go back to a keypad, no way am I going to shorten my nails

I am a girly girl and love all things feminine but nails are the one thing I'm not interested in. Long painted talons do not impress me at all, my nails are short and tidy. I'm not allowed to have long nails because of the job I do and having them too long is a breeding ground for bacteria underneath them. I do paint my toenails but that's it

Calcium makes up less than 1% of the structure of your nails, so a defficiency in that wouldnt make any difference.

I would agree with Oohhjane and say a vitamin deficiency. I've been taking a multivitamin for 2 years now and my nails have never looked better.

Prior to that, they used to do the same as yours and also didn't grow very log before breaking off.
