Televisions are getting to the point where I'm not convinced my eyes can tell the difference between HD and ultra mega super HD

To be honest , no it doesn't .

Sport ends up too over defined and less realistic with more definition .

Nor me! My TV is an ancient thing that's as deep as it is wide and weighs a ton. Midget watches dvds but I don't bother with it at all.

Wasn't aware there was any channels actually broadcasting in 4K, total waste in my mind, even hd is a waste, will stick with my trusty CRT that I've had for over 13 years now thanks.

"Does the world need a higher def?"

I was happy with my big brick of a tv. Four buttons to press and tune in and three channels.

Hardest decision was grandstand or world of sport.

Now it's ridiculous for choice. We don't know what to watch! Let alone definition.

But 8k is probably an overkill. Not sure if the definition is really needed. But as long as there is marketing, there'll always be feature driven products and made up three letter acronyms to wow and confuse us!

We as a nation...I couldn't care, I've only just bought the first telly I've owned for years and it was a waste...never gets watched, nothing on worth the electricity.

Definitely don't need a phone with a 4k screen

As tvs get bigger you need the higher resolution. A HDTV has 1920 pixels across and 1080 pixels down whatever the screen size so as screens get bigger the pixels get bigger and your picture starts to look blocky.

4k tvs have about twice as many pixels across and twice as many pixels down so you get more detail and the pic doesn't look as blocky.

"Does the world need a higher def?"

No but the manufacturers do to keep selling consumers more stuff,to keep their profits growing.

And the government do so people keep running in their hamster wheels to earn the money to pay for their new consumer durables so that they are too busy to ask awkward questions about what is really going on.

Great for early adopters, but until you actually get a decent amount of content, there doesnt seem to be much point in a 4k or 8k (or, im guessing 16k comes next).

I also think that curved screens must be a load of bollocks. Might be better in one particular sweet spot in the room, but surely worse everywhere else in the room.

See, there comes a point when ultra hi def becomes a distraction - the hyper real colours, over saturation and the high dynamic range make everything surreal, like you've taken half a tab of LSD.

Plus the motion control and smoothing technologies make everything look like it was shot direct on videotape in the 80's.

All the sets, wardrobe etc. Look crap. Suddenly a film like Avengers Assemble looks like it have about £4.50 spent on production!

When US went for decent definition we went for crap.

BBC is going to turn off fm in favour of much poorer quality DAB radio.

Why do we let ourselves be conned?

They're needed only if media manages to keep up with it. But 4K 60fps is incredible and for gaming I'll never go back.

Yes remember that 4k is a stepping stone to 8k so it's already old tech.

I bought one last year when my old TV packed up.

The only stuff I've watched in 4k is off Netflix. It's an improvement in quality, but if you'd of sat me down in front of it and not told me it was 4k I'd probably not of noticed.

I've had the privilege of seeing Sky new Ultra HD (4k) box, Sky Q, on a top of the range 4k TV. It was epic! Out of this world!

It literally only takes a blink of the eye to see the difference between the two.

There was a huge difference in clarity between SD and HD but the 4k takes things to a whole new level.

I for one will definitely be upgrading in the near future
