Hi I am in my late forties and started to get spots on my face. Any ideas of how to prevent them or what to put on them please.

What soap are you using?

Try simple, or dove, I have very sensitive skin and these are the only soaps I can use.

Do you suffer with eczema? Most known causes are the soaps people use.

Apply an aspirin face pack twice a week. I've suffered with acne since I was 12 and still take antibiotics now (and I'm almost 40!). I've learned that not much stops a breakout.

Another top tip is to wet shave with the hottest (running) water possible and rinse your blade with every stroke.

The black (charcoal) one is very good too.

Shrek here. Same problem here. My teens were plagued with severe acne but cleared up in my twenties. I hit the forties and started to get spots again. I've tried all kinds of facial scrubs/wipes with little or no effect but everyone's different. So best to experiment with those. Be advised that they are only a surface treatment. It's all dependent on the type of spot you are getting.

I get them all over my face, so it's not shaving related.

I've been fobbed off by the doctor but I'm going back so don't let that discourage you.

Can only sympathise. Good luck for in finding a cure.

Oh for the scrubs etc "sylacillic (spelling?) acid" is what your looking for.

Antibacterial and helps break down the sebum that's clogging the Pires and what causes the spots

You mean salicylic acid.

Hence why I suggested the aspirin face pack. Face scrubs in the UK contain a tiny percentage and its not very effective. Aspirin contains a much higher quantity and works really well.

Go back to your doctor and ask for Minocycline or ask to be referred to a dermatologist and put on Accutane (GP's can't prescribe it). Be warned though, Accutane has a lot of side effects but if you don't suffer with them its highly effective.

I'm on lymecycline atm it helps but long term antibiotics can cause a few gut problems.

Remember if you for the accutane route that they will get worse before they get better and you will have dry eyes and skin (can be an issue if you've had eye surgery).

Also not relevant as you're a guy but accutane is tetrogenic so will cause birthdefects if a woman happens to get any in her system just before /during pregnancy so keep them away from where they could be mistaken for something else.

2% is the legal max iirc and aspirin contains acetalsalicylic acid I don't know it it works the same way given the extra group attached.

Would depend how the antibiotic effect works and if the shape is important (if it's an inhibitor etc )

Yes. 2% is the legal max. You can order stuff from the US with up to 15% and it really works well.

Aspirin works very well too, I've been using it since I was a teenager to control breakouts.

As for Accutane, I'm one of those who can't take it. It caused blisters on my scalp and almost shut my kidneys down. It cured my sister with a single 8 week course though.

Brighton - even Hove!

Drink lots of water too. Have a cleansing and toning and moisturising regime. Your skin will change as you age.
