I know I'm a bit of a philistine, but yesterday I had the following conversation with a tour guide:

"And this is our best piece, it's a Michelangelo"

{hesitant pause}

"It's not very good though is it?"

"Oh, no, he didn't finish it"

{another pause}

"So why isn't this piece better?" (said while pointing to a flawless sculpture of some naked bloke wrestling with a lion)

"But that's not a Michelangelo"

"Oh, I see" (I didn't though, it WAS better)

Also, I know art is meant to be inspirational, educational, enlightening and ennobling, but after seeing a billion pictures of Jesus being taken down from the cross, is it wrong to just concentrate on the boobs so that I can answer Harley's question about the perfect breast?

It wasn't just her though. We saw a Bottichelli and the eyes were decidedly crooked

(Nice boobs though)

I'm rubbish at painting, but I could certainly be persuaded to give it a go.

I may have to be a bit more 'hands-on' though.

(Could I just explain I was a bit short-sighted and had to do it all by feel?)

Ironically Mrs ddc was asked to cover up today as she had too much shoulder showing. Inside the church - boobs everywhere!

Even the one we have entitled "The Santa Maria with the squirting boobies"

If it's in a wall then tits, bums and willys are fine, but if it's in the flesh then the priests will get collywobbles

I don't 'get' art. I don't like The Emperor's New Clothes aspect of it. One person says it's cool and people follow like sheep. Much like fashion.

I prefer the people that are more open. My idea of something arty will be different to someone else's. Doesn't mean either of us are wrong. I might like a local artist and someone else might like a Michelangelo.

If you like it and appreciate it, then that's all that matters. It doesn't matter who the person is who produced it really. I think most of Turners work is atrocious.

I found the Cambridge Open Studios was really good. Before I went round the first time, about 6-7 years ago, I would have said I was interested in traditional art, landscapes, stuff like that. And at the end of the 4 weekends I found I'd actually got 3 non-representational pieces and a deep love of fabric art and mixed media. My take-home message from that was there's a big difference between "that's nice" and "I could look at that forever and never get tired of it".

I like pretty things with soft lines or nice colours. I like Constable and Turner. I don't like Picasso. Too pointy and weird for my brain and eyes.

But Michaelangelo was responsible for the fresco on the roof of the Sistine Chapel - arguably THE masterwork of Western art.

Ergo, anything he produced is gonna have some cache.

Blimey. Art gets Fabbeds as worked up as cheating.

The bottom line is that what is art is whatever you as an individual think it is. You don't have to believe the self-professed experts. The same goes for whether you believe so-called masterpieces to be better or worse than anything else.

Regardless of what you think of his art, I'd thoroughly recommend Grayson Perry's Reith Lecture on this topic. informative and entertaining.
