I was astounded to hear today that over 1000 migrants have died already building the infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar...they estimate it could be 4000 by then....WTF! Is it just me that thinks this is outrageous?!

Now ducks head and hides behind the settee for when stalwart footie fans come a looking!!

I heard that on the radio but didn't think it was entirely to do with the world cup.

Just the migrant workers in general.

That's true, but these changes were only brought about by extreme pressure from outside agencies. Also, bearing in mind the temperatures regularly reach over 100 degrees, they stand no chance.

The problem of migrant workers dying in Qatar is well documented long before they even won (cough) the bid to host the World Cup.... in fact it was raised as one of the objections as to why they shouldn't get it.

Migrant workers make up over 90% of the population in Qatar - around 1.5 million of them building new cities for the super rich.

The body count for building the stadiums will likely be a fraction of the overall deaths of the migrant construction workers.

No I don't read the guardian it was the first online article i found.I listened to them talking about it on Jeremy vines show today.

Whatever the reason behind the deaths its far to many, but to try and blame a sport for it is not right imo.

They are not dying for footballers so that is not a fact at all.

They are dying because the remaining 6% of the Qatar population - who happen to be highest GDP per capita of any country in the world and generally make footballers look like low income families - want to show the world how rich and therefore powerful they are.... it's a political pissing contest.

I am not daft and do understand that, but if they were not having the World Cup, would these men still have died? Ok, they could have worked on other "projects", but my point was relating to the World Cup. I know it is not "footballers" who are doing this, but the platform causing some of the deaths is for them

I couldn't find any reliable info on it but if it's remotely true it can't be right for countries to support their national teams to play in the stadiums.

But I know nothing of the country or what's actually happening.

I've worked in 50deg c, it's hot, really hot, just walking around in overalls and boxers underneath you are drenched in minutes. We worked a maximum of 15 minutes then had at least 15 minutes in air conditioned bliss drinking pints of isotonic drinks and taking lots of salt tablets. It takes a while to get acclimated and you have to keep an eye on your workmates. There were deaths, rarely but it did happen. To work a full shift in those conditions is a scary prospect without having somewhere to cool down and replace fluids and minerals.

How many of those 2000 have died working directly on the world cup project is not known but one is too many for an event that is supposed to be a showcase event.

The players when it comes to the world cup itself are going to really struggle to play even a half let alone a full 90, cramps fainting and possibly worse. Maybe an African or Arabic nation will stand a chance. A complete lack of foresight and responsibility shown by Fifa.

The whole thing stunk from day one.

Qatar are not a footballing nation. The weather conditions are so bad, they're think about moving the tournament to mid-season. Qatar haven't played in a major tournament ever. I could go on.

But what they do have is a lot of money. They didn't need leaked information to figure out what went down and because they're not a footballing nation, most (if not all) stadia has to be built from scratch. It's no wonder people are dying. It's a race against the clock to make it happen.

England or Australia should have got it.

Lol, ffs. These "overpaid footballers" don't want people building stadiums to die - they certainly won't want to play in Qatar at all. Stop making out like footballers are the cause of every world problem.

The whole thing is an obvious bribe - the deaths of any people working on stadiums in Qatar lie at whoever accepted the bribe's feet. Not "overpaid footballers".
