my boss has just walked in and said "I've noticed on the holiday board your off tomorrow, as we're really busy, can you come in?"

I said "I'm going to my wives nans funeral"

he said "what time is it, can you come in early or come in after the funeral?"

I said "your actually being serious aren't you?"

he said" "yeah, we've got loads on"

so I said "No, the day was booked last week and its a bloody funeral for gods sake, have some compassion"

I'm still stunned this conversation actually took place

see that is something iv encountered a lot and that work should be the priority for everyone and its live to work not work to live and then we wonder why people get so stressed and burned out! how many people even get a proper lunch break or take the time off they are entitled to??

the way people get treated at work sometimes is terrible! iv had friends ask me to watch their children when they are poorly rather than suffer the flack for taking time off for when their child is sick and also have been pressured when there has been a funeral to go into work take a few hrs off for a funeral then go back its terrible!! x

thanks, already checked the site to see where I stood, I'm well within my rights, the boss has just had a moan now cause he has to stay late to do what he wanted me to do, its only packing boxes, dont know why he hasnt got some poor jobless off the dole queue to do it as its a job that needs some one full time on, but the boss has the "all much in" attitude.

We're not allowed to use the internet at work so we actually get our work done.

We have to justify our overtime because we answer to the taxpayers.

We are entitled to time off, however, there has to be a certain amount of staff in the office at all times.

Yes, we get bereavement and funeral times with no hassle but thats because I work for the government so our rules are heavily set.

Those with children who take excessive time off have to take it unpaid. I don't think that's unfair. One lady I work with had 27 days extra off last year because of her kids, no one who either has older children or no children gets that....... so why shouldn't she get moaned out or made to take it unpaid?

Mally, I like you and your posts but seriously man, you could have packed the sodding boxes instead of being on here, thus pleasing your boss and ensuring he didn't moan about having time off .....

WHILE there are too many people out of work, employes will continue to pile pressure and stress onto the staff.

If we ask people working in the 50's and 60's after ww2, people could walk from a job to a job

But in all fairness, during those decades, most women stayed home or worked part time so there was plenty of jobs for the bread winners, the man of the household

I do think in many ways things were better because children felt wanted, and there seemed to be an all round better family vibe going on.

I know lots of single parents will say they dont choose to be single parents but many do and I have little sympathy for them. Its hard work looking after a home and family.

Getting to back to Mallys dilemma, unless there are less people and surplus jobs, then bosses will continue to be arseholes

For me .. the time I am entitled to is up to 5 days for a close relative and I mean close and no time for anyone outside the immediate family.

Anyone can take time from work at anytime. You just SAY you are going to a funeral and that you won't be in. Stands to reason that you wouldn't be paid though.

People can pretend to be sick so that they don't have to ask persmission. Thing is - that goes down on your record and eventually you will use up all your paid 'sick' entitlement and be called in for interview or have to go for a medical.

I've worked with people whose relatives only become 'close' or 'precious' in death. Funny we never hear about them when they are alive. Why go to the funeral of someone you never took time to keep contact with?

Why do some people think that doing the right thing makes bosses cunts ?

How do people think that business' run if the attitude to work is to 'get away with it' or get agency staff in ?

If a business folds in the recesssion does anyone see their own part in it's downfall...... or just continually fucking bleat about their loss ?

But in all fairness, during those decades, most women stayed home or worked part time so there was plenty of jobs for the bread winners, the man of the household

I do think in many ways things were better because children felt wanted, and there seemed to be an all round better family vibe going on.

Bosses are less arseholey than workers who offer no support for their colleagues. Think they have a right to everything and a responsibility for fuck all ...... AND worse than anything they don't even find out what their rights really are and whine like kids.

Anyone can take time from work at anytime. You just SAY you are going to a funeral and that you won't be in. Stands to reason that you wouldn't be paid though.

i was keepin it simple didnt want to go into the degree level stuff and give timescales or start qoutin spare rib magazine?? obviously when the country was still agricultural and at the through the industrial revolution woman have worked it was the choice of jobs that changed!!

We are only allowed to take time off for IMMEDIATE family.

I was allowed to take time off (holiday pay) for my best mates partners funeral.

We are not allowed access to the internet - only specified webs sites that are work related are accessable.

When at work we have to work, and if the main jobs are all done - there are PLENTY of menail jobs that can be done.

Our bosses dont allow us to have idle hands, - and personally i dont think that is a bad thing.

We are never behind, and when we have a busy busy day, we know that on the quiet days we have prepped and cleaned so a few busy days doesnt set us back

As for people who have kids, i think "certain" allowances should be made, eg if they are to be collected sick from school etc, but then the time should be made up somehow or taken unpaid.

Same as smokers - who "nip out" for a fag 10 times a day - 10 mins at a time - not fair on the rest of us when they have all that time as "break" while we carry on working.

As for lunch break - whats one of those????

I'm "a" boss, and would never expect anyone to do any overtime, or give them a hard time for declining the offer.

However, if they were spending significant periods of time on non-work related internet activity, they'd be doing themselves out of a payrise, promotion etc.

But then I wouldn't dare come on here via work's internet connection. We're not actively monitored, but there will be a record.

A boss who acts like the OP describes needs management training - it is at best insensitive behaviour and not conducive to motivating your staff. I try to bear in mind that all my staff are people with real day to day issues in their lives - and families , kids etc come first.

Internet activity at work is somewhat different and I would not be happy if my staff used the net for browsing sites - nothign wrong checking your emails but there has to be an understanding that paid time is just that?

so I said "No, the day was booked last week and its a bloody funeral for gods sake, have some compassion"

I'm still stunned this conversation actually took place

I worked with folk like that.

Wanting me to change holidays at a moments notice because someone gotta go on a course about a new fax machine etc. wwf

And no i didnt.

And when my mom was dying , they wanted me to go and cover at work because one lady had the toothache.

Some folk are soooooo insensitive

One of my staff had to take her dad to a funeral last week ( a close friend had died, and as dad is in his 80s and infirm, he couldn't go if she didn't help) and I gave her compassionate leave with no loss of pay.

When she came back in, some hours later, the next hone call she took was to tell her that her auntie had died,

so of course, she has another funeral coming up.

I sent her home, as she was very upset, and of course the next funeral will be dealt with on the same basis as the first, ie no loss of holiday or pay.
