The Labour advisors and spin doctors will have something to smooth over the cracks.

They will be working all through the night for Brown to come up with a vote winning appearance during the party leaders debate tomorrow night.

As for anyone not voting Labour all because of a gaff, get real. He made a mistake and has apologised. Even Obama made a personal gaff during his Presidential campaign and still won it.

You vote for policies and not personalities.

The common concensus watching the news seems to be that Gordy the Gaffe is a 'dead man wakling' - a large % of the Labour MPs didn't want Brown leading the country into this election, they'd rather have had Blair and waited until after this election before doing a Julius on him.

It IS a two-horse race now and my money is on Cam the Man to walk it by a mile. Wavering Labour voters won't risk it on Nick the - oops, nearly.. and will vote Blue. Landslide on the horizon!

Gordy, go get ya gaffa tape and get going, you're a gonna! hehehe

Diff'rent strokes hon, those were very different times back then. They said communities would die but up here in Newcastle it's positively thriving. The Quayside has been totally redeveloped and Siren doesn't recognise it from the place she knew as a girl. Many of the small mining villages have become nice places out in the country now and those former miners have long since retired and are living in lovely little villages. We've driven round and seen them, and I'd love to move out of the city and go rural.

thats urbanisation for ya! i think most of the former miners have died due to conditions they developed from years down a mine working in the most horrid of conditions to be chucked on the scrapheap by maggie and co. they dont forget the ones that have survived believe me i know i live in an old mining area but dont have the rose tinted glasses i see the decay and the impact it has had on people. take a wander round a council housing scheme the legacy lives on xx

Look at what this woman said in detail...

"All these Eastern Europeans that are coming in - where are they flocking from?"

Well to me she is showing a typical ignorance of EU migration, we are in the EU (like it or not), these migrants are from nations within the EU and we too are free to settle in and work in other EU nations......as at least 800,000 Brits have decided to freely do.

If this little old widow had half a chance to go and live in Spain with friends or family she would in all likelyhood jump at the chance.

Maybe it is lack of information, or at least positive information that is the problem here?

Many older people just don't get what the EU is all about, the Department of Work and Pensions estimated that there are currently 480,000 retired Brits living in Spain alone.

To me the old dear was showing no more than a lack of knowledge about the EU, Brown is no orator of any value, he finds it hard to talk to the public and he showed more that he is short of patience than anything else.

Yes hes human and yes he is entitled to his opinions

However he is a statesmen and other peoples jobs and positions in parliament depend on a lot of what he says

If then by accident or design his negative views are aired he is then responsible for that

If you depend on people to survive you keep your opinions of them to yourself if you cant do that no matter what pressure you are under then you dont deserve their vote simples xx

With all due respect the comments he made were not in public, they were in the privacy of his government car.

Not exactly the same as airing your views in public....bit like when John Major got caught out describing his fellow Tories as 'bastards.

Oh for sure they would have. Their game is oneupmanship with the BBC. They wouldn't have given a toss who screwed up so long as someone did. Some of the election commentators have been saying that this is the gaffe they'd been waiting for. They suspected one of them would make one and were ready for it.

My parents where actually liberals so no following them

lol quoting Gordon he stated in the car that "she used to vote Labour". To quote her "I'd be ashamed now to say I'm Labour"

I never read too much in to it, can so easily be edited and rehashed, plus just moving a comma in a newspaper report can give something a whole new meaning.

Now you confirm she ISN'T? She said she was and nobody has any reason to disbelieve her, an election is a secret ballot and she didn't have to disclose who she voted for. There are no grounds on which to base your flawed analysis.

I believe she has been a Labour voter, I don't feel I need to question this, she just showed her innocent ignorance regarding EU migrating workers.

Brown showed his lack of patience with people that don't understand things fully before talking about them, that has always been his weakness.

He made the mistake of attempting to explain the hard truth about EU workers to her when she probably didn't want to hear that.

He should have realised he was on a loser and make his excuses and walked away sooner.

THE REAL ISSUE IS BEING MISSED!

People are missing the real issue about this incident.

The woman involved expressed views that can heard everywhere. She wasn't even venomous in them either.

It was why Gordon Brown thought someone called Sue was to blame!

There had clearly been a vetting process at work, and the lady had got through.

Brown expected to be asked questions by a fawning admirer but that didn't happen. Instead ordinary questions werre asked.

The planned publicity stunt back-fired.

He has been surrounded by fawning sychophants for so long he can't recognise genuine concerns let alone answer them.

Rushden

Can't believe that all these years after Maggie was in power that she is still brought up in these posts! Now that IS fame! lol

This lady did not in any way show ignorance of the EU immigration laws! She merely questioned the amount of Eastern Europeans that have come into GB.. I would think a lot of people would want to know why the current government allowed this to happen!

To bring up how many Brits live in Europe is puerile at best. No one is questioning the policy of other countries, it is the "open door" policy of this failed government that was being questioned!

For all the protestations of the Labour supporters, it doesn't matter if it was supposed to be a private comment or not. If that is how he feels, we have a need to know that or it is not a true vote. Anyone who would still vote for Gordon Clown now.....

Now all that has to happen is remember that whoever gets in, there will be a very hard time ahead. Maggie was elected and she told everyone that it would get worse before it got better, but everyone forgot why we were in that state in Maggies first Parliament.

Reading the last few comments, why are people questioning this lady? She has done nothing wrong and the usual protagonists are calling her a liar!

This is NOT her fault, in fact she didn't know about it until she was told by the press. Don't try your dirty tricks to try and make Gordon Clown look better.

"The government can do very little as regards movement of labour and/or dwelling within the EU so quite why you query why Labour allowed this to happen escapes me...."

It's simple really if you think about it! Labour under Gordon Clown had the right to defer the influx of Eastern Block migrants for two years, they chose to let them in straight away, unlike other European countries!

Throughout our membership, we had a veto on most things we didn't want and we could have vetoed the inclusion of or placed restrictions on the new countries that joined the EU. That veto was not used!

At the last election, it was in the Labour manifesto to have a referendum on the "constitution" of Europe. That never happened and we now have no rights to veto decisions that should be British decisions!

This problem has only sprung up in the last 5/6 years... Lets see, who was in power then???? Which party could have stopped it happening or at least put up a good fight!

We should follow Americas lead and introduce a strict visa system for anyone who wants to enter the UK, even for holidays! Immigration has been good for the UK, but we are broke, overcrowded and losing our identity, so enough is enough!

If his mic had been off none of would be any the wiser, but it wasn't off and we heard everything he said. He didn't go back to Rochdale under some sense of remorse for the woman he insulted, he did it to save face to the other 35m people he's asking to keep him in his job. His only regret was that he got caught. The man is an arrogant buffoon and that's a dangerous combination to have in a leader. Bring on the Clegg-Cameron Cousins!

In order to impose a visa system on European citizens we would need to leave the EU, and that's another subject completely.

The only two countries that took up the Two Year Opt Out for Poland, Slovakia and Lithuania were Spain and Portugal, both of which dropped this Opt Out before the first year had passed.

The main reason that Blair (it wasn't Brown) never took up the Opt Out was because of pressure from the CBI, the simple fact is that British Industry didn't want to miss out on the opportunities that opening factories in Poland and Slovakia offered.

As soon as SEAT cars wanted to open a new engine plane in Slovakia the parent company Volkswagon encouraged the German government to apply pressure on Spain to drop their Opt Out veto.

Spain resisted for a few months until Volkswagon threatened to remove all SEAT car production from mainland Spain.

It is never as simple as it seems, Britain never chose to step back from the Two year Opt Out on a whim, they did so after discussions with the CBI and other parties.

Immigration from countries outside the EU is of course a concern for us all, but even that needs to be allowed to a certain extent because we still need certain skills that other nationalities can offer.

If this woman has an ounce of dignity about her she will donate that money to something more useful like the Help for Heroes charity the minute she gets her cheque from The Mail.

Yet again, when it comes to money it seems that jealousy rears its ugly head once more and that the only way for some people to feel good about anything is for HER to give the money away. Why the fuck should she.

I'm sorry to say that is not the way it works. Soldiers get the minimum kit, while money is poured into high value, high prestige capital programs. this is the way it has always been and it will continue that way until budget and procurement is taken away from civil servants and given to the armed forces (and that just will not happen). As a result troops will continue to be issued with sub standard, obsolete and semi obsolete equipment until Whitehall itself is threatened. After all the troops get paid and if they want better boots and Armour they can buy it out of their own money!

It was like this in my day, it is like this now, it will not change!

let her have her 80k and her wee ten mins at fame and let the mail pay a ludicrous amount no skin off my nose and it probably be more a curse than a blessing because if she claimin any benefits it will cancel them out completely!

im sure if it had happened to cameron you would be lookin at a way to have her hung drawn and quartered and her head put on a pike for all to see.

if she hadnt been a money grabbing scum bag would she have sold her story???

I'm sure The Mail knows it's business better than you or I and knows where there is a story that will sell papers (The Mail is a cruddy little rag anyway and we won't have it in the house unless we've run out of toilet paper).

If they think it's worth paying £80k to a 66y/o granny then that's their affair but there's something very unwholesome about judging her for it. We'd all take the money in her situation and anyone says they wouldn't is not being honest about it.

You are right Evie.

It's about Gordon making a gaff... a rather large one at election time...... and about the women it was aimed at running to the tabloids and 'selling' her 'hurt feelings' story to the tune of £80K.

Yes it's election time.

Yes Gordon Brown is a total arse and shouldn't be allowed to hold any position of power.

Yes it's gonna be a hung parliment (hopefully withe the Liberals and the Conservatives)

Yes the selling of a story of insignificance (in my eyes) brings out peoples emotions.

Yes we all wish that the soldiers who are injured got the compensation they deserve.

Yes we all wish we had a government who supplied what the military wanted (not needed, because they have everything they need - believe me, I know) but actually what they want.

Lets get back on track.

£80K for a story about how he called her a bigot.

I was called a timewasting, fat, old trollop who couldn't do any better than to shag a dead bloke because he couldn't see how ugly I was........ the other day.

Shall I sell that story to the papers?

"Hard working Military employee is called vile names for not meeting"

Will I get £80K?

No.......I'm not in the public eye and therefore, no one cares.

But then again, if Gordon had called me a bigot, I'd have voted BNP just to piss him off........ not gone running to the papers to line my own pockets!

I did not mention "mobile Mc" or any of that sort of crap! However as for not needing US equipment that is rubbish! The yanks call us "the borrowers" because of the amount of equipment we scrounge off them, if you don't believe me, do some research and look up the amount of stuff we have officially "loaned" including the 7000+(last time I heard) .50 cal heavy machine-guns! As for your brother, he is in a war-zone, he is subject to DCI's, UKLF Standing Orders, Theater Standing Orders, Regimental Standing Orders, Squadron/Company/Div Standing Orders, Daily Orders and The Official Secrets Act. All his communications will be monitored, I am sure that among all that will be multiple orders not to reveal any equipment shortfalls or inadequacies and funnily enough our troops are extremely disciplined and obey orders. That is why those outside the forces hardly hear any complaints.

When I was in we did not complain and when asked by those outside about life we never told the truth, firstly to protect our family and friends and secondly because we obeyed orders!

Of course I will defer to your extensive military service (through others), and accept that the reason the armed forces are unable to retain troops and that so many ex forces personal and coroners blame losses on lack of and faulty/ sub standard equipment is because they do not have your insight.

Our good friend came back from Afghanistan on Monday, having been there for almost Seven months with the Rifles. He gets very annoyed when people rattle on about kit shortages, according to him the only real shortage in kit is helicopters.

In fact there are certain bits of British kit that the Americans and Canadians pay top money for over there, according to our friend there were problems with boots and webbing on his previous tour but these have been rectified.

This time he took an extra dozen khaki t-shirts and some thermals for cold nights but the kit shortage stories are often exaggerated.

Of course I will defer to your extensive military service (through others), and accept that the reason the armed forces are unable to retain troops and that so many ex forces personal and coroners blame losses on lack of and faulty/ sub standard equipment is because they do not have your insight."

I refer you to the posts above from Jane. You like to think you know everything but most of what you post is info you've copied from elsewhere and you are nothing but an armchair warrior.

"But then again, if Gordon had called me a bigot, I'd have voted BNP just to piss him off........ not gone running to the papers to line my own pockets!"

I'd have taken the £80k. Definately. That's my two kids through Uni with no debts at the end of it.

" All his communications will be monitored, I am sure that among all that will be multiple orders not to reveal any equipment shortfalls or inadequacies and funnily enough our troops are extremely disciplined and obey orders. That is why those outside the forces hardly hear any complaints.

Personal communications are NOT monitored, even from the war zone.

I work with the front line military, those on their way to and on their way back from war.

Not one has ever complained about shortages other than that of helicopters and even that is a divided opinion.

The military has changed since you were apprently in it mate. Don't confuse what you went through with Ireland, Bosnia, Falklands (possibley) etc, with what is happening today in Afghanistan etc.

Totally different wars, totally different reasons, totally different terrain.....different equipment needed.

Unless you have been out to Afghanistan or work within the departments that work with and supply the front line, you have no idea what they need and what the exact position is.

Bridgend

It appears Mrs Duffy is herself an immigrant, spending half the year in her apartment in Spain. Pot, kettle and black comes to mind.
