"Imagine... is about Jimi Hendrix, the greatest rock guitarist of all time. Do you agree?

He's one of the biggest icons but certainly not the greatest. That accolade should go to someone like Eddie Van Halen. He took what Hendrix did, expanded it and not only changed the way the guitar was played but also changed the way the instrument was built with his homemade Frankenstein guitar and modified Marshall 1959 SLP MKII amp...

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck are my all time guitar heroes.

I was listening to Joe Bonamassa at Royal Albert Hall concert and he can play a guitar.

Eric came on as a "special guest" and the difference in class was amazing.

Eric is still God

Jimmy Page, Joe Satriani, Tommy Ionni, Joe walsh, Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham. All very different, however for record sales alone and my personal favourite, it would have to be Buckingham.

He was on BBC 4 right after the Tommy went off on Sunday night.

Saw a great Rory tribute band called "Sinner Boy" a couple of months back. They are well worth a watch if you see a gig near you

Hendrix was good but not the best. There are too many to mention... in no particular order Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Clapton, Beck, Page, Steve Vai, Rhandy Rhoads, Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore, the Dire Straits dude whose name I can't spell, John Fogherty, John Sykes, Steve Perry... the list of guitar greats, nay gods is endless.

If I had to pick one, it would be Jimmy Page not just for his ability to play guitar but his rock'n'roll, live fast, die young life style and attitude.

And don't forget that Les Paul invented multitrack recording, without him modern music wouldn't sound anything like it does.

Interesting fact:

He couldn't stand the famous Gibson guitar that bore his name, in his opinion there were too many compromises, from the fretboard to the positioning of the pickups. He used to have Gibson send him rejected/second bodies and necks and route and build the guitars himself!

Eric Clapton was the most skillful and best at playing the instrument, Hendrix and Pete Townshend were the best on stage showmen. Lowell George though was the most in tune with his instrument and got the best sound out of it.

Peter Green sold his famous '59 Les Paul to Gary Moore for £60 and a Gibson SG. Moore used the guitar to record, among others, Still Got The Blues. It's now valued at over £1,000,000.

"Dennis Chambers didnt get a mention though.

He's a drummer!

Don't know why Slash gets so many mentions, he's more of a pentatonic whore than Kirk Hammett! They both bore me to tears, as does Clapton these days.

Mike Stern could play the arse off most mentioned here and he's far more versatile too.

The best guitarist currently doing the rounds is Guthrie Govan, by a country mile!

Look up 'Fives' on YouTube, then tell me if Slash could play it. And Guthrie doesn't just shred either, before that accusation is thrown around.

Zak Wylde"

Randy rhoads like hendrix died an early death, only 25 yrs old the guitarist with ozzy osbornes band was on reckoned to be on verge of what could have beeen greatness when the plane he was in crashed, the pilot was the tour bus driver for the ozzzy band who was fooling around whilst flying and found to have heavy traces of drugs in his body, rhoads was clean.

another tragic wasted talent.

Costa Blanca Spain...

"Clapton, followed closely by Ritchie Blackmore, and the one who got away (sadly died too young) Paul Kossoff."

I would add, although not the greatest but very high on the list, Gary Moore, Joe Bonnamossa, Jimmy Paige, and Carlos Santana. Oh and a young kid we saw in Benidorm a couple of years ago who was one hell of a surprise.

Why no mention of John McLaughlin of the Miles Davis group and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

He can outplay any of the above.

Also you could think ok of joe pass, Charlie Christian, django rheinhart, mick ronson.

best just to make your own compilation album with 10 sides and 10 tracks a side

trouble music is organic and as such there will be more fantastic tracks in the future

Not the greatest by any means but a surprising name for a great guitarist is Glenn Campbell who was in great demand for his talent. A leading exponent on a twelve string.

i saw the documentary on Glenn Campbell and never realised how talented this man was

There's a video on YouTube of him and Steve Lukather playing together that is brilliant.

Steve Lukather, there's another great player unlikely to get much of a mention on here!"

Great call on Lukather. Everyone's heard his playing without realising it, such is the vastness of his session work.

I should add Steve Stevens too, very underrated player....

West Wales and Cardiff

Yeah. This is pretty much who's the best rock guitarist isn't it?

I'm not a huge fan of jazz guitar, but there's people playing that form of music who absolutely blow rock guitarists out of the water.

Somebody like Martin Taylor is doing stuff on a whole higher level. On his version of I Got Rhythm, he's effectively playing three distinct musical parts on one instrument, at the same time. He's mimicking a walking double bass line on the bottom two strings, throwing in little comping chords like a piano player would do on the middle ones and improvising a melody on the top ones. Ludicrously hard.

I once say a documentary on gypsy jazz and there were little gypsy kids, brought up in that tradition, who were way ahead of any rock guitarists.

It's not music I love, but it's incredible stuff.

I prefer people who play with feel really. There'll always be someone who can play faster, shred more, be more flashy. That's why BB King, Peter Green and Glen Campbell would be my favourites.

The guy I love too, is Dave Rawlings. He's Gillian Welch, a brilliant country/folk songwriter's guitarist (and partner). Just plays a battered old Epiphone acoustic, but has touch, feel and an ear for unusual notes. His stuff fits the music and takes it to other places whilst always being sympathetic to the song. Amazing player.

Try Bireli Lagrene and Gary Potter too.

The former is a french guy that not only plays gypsy jazz but also any other type of jazz you care to mention. As a bit of a sideline, he does a fantastic Jaco Pastorius impression on bass too.

The latter is a genius, almost savant like, Liverpudlian who it's unlikely anyone has heard of but he plays a country/gypsy jazz fusion unlike anything you've heard before. Absolutely sensational live player.
