A Secret Hideaway In the caravan of love

Someone asked me the other day, 'What was your favourite fast food when you were growing up?'

'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. All the food was slow.'

'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'

'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained. !

'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans , set foot on a golf course, vacationed out of the country or had a credit card.

My parents never drove me to school. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).

I remember we had a television which was really a piece of polished furniture, the screen seemed about 6” square (that is 150mm in new money).

It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people...

I never had a telephone in my room.The only phone was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers --my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. He had to get up at 6AM every morning.

Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

My first burger was a “Wimpey”, however, you had to sit down on a chair, at a table. Then a waitress asked you politely, ”what would you like”. Your food was brought to you on a plate and you were also provided with a “knife and fork”. But the strange thing is……you paid for it after you had eaten it!!!!

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

You took me straight back to my childhood.

But we had fish and chips on a Friday night after Judo, with batter bits and in real newspaper.

i can remember thinkin i was so cool when i got my colour portable tv for my room i think i was 12!!

and i was the first in my class to travel abroad (the old boy retired from pit before miners strike lol!!) xx

Im gonna copy the op and show my 11 year old cos she doesnt believe me when I say that when I was born there was only 3 channels on TV and none were Disney Channel, we only had one TV set and it wasnt in my bedroom, never mind paper and milk rounds, my dad was the milkman and I was made to run around delivering the pints each morning before school even tho technically I was too young at only 9!!

Our lads first Xmas aged 2 we put a tangerine, an apple a 10p plastic jeep and some chocolate money in his stocking and he was chuffed to little feckin mint balls and I cried..........then took him down stairs to see what he really had and I cry at what it has cost us since

Our kids asked us. In the olden days when you were at school what computers did you have??

When we told them they were't widely available then, only used by large multinational companies they nearly chocked!! And when we told them about a mobile phone coming in a small suitcase, well they thought we'd gone mad lol

You know you're getting old first time we got a cd tried to turn it over to play the other side lol

Only 6 days a week? I did 7 lol

Only 7 days a week mine was 13 day a week mornings and evenings the evening round was manchester evening news delivered

mon –fri sat evening also had the Pink sports paper. Yep 6AM was about right but if I remember right one day in the week I had to get up for 5AM think it was a Wednesday because that was the day your bag seamed to have loads more in it Magazines with the papers.

Thank God times have changed.

As a kid I remember being mightily pissed off that everywhere was shut on a Sunday. I got two days off school at the weekend and one of them was totally ruined by not being able to go anywhere or buy anything. And as for only 3 TV channels that showed Fanny bleedin Craddock with her billowing silk blouse sleeves draping over all the food - man, she wouldn't get past Health & Hygene these days, silly old bag. And what about The Moomins? What were they all about then? TV when I was a kid was absolute garbage and was the main reason we went out to play so much, y'know, scrumping and knock up ginger (although that has a whole new connotation nowadays hehehe).

I own my own house, its mine and I can do what I want with it. No nosey landlord coming round, letting himself him unannounced. No rent book and the promise to pay on the never never. I pay my bills every month without fail and owe fook all to no-one. I holiday when I want to and play golf when the weather is fair - and I enjoy it. Why would I hark back to a life that denied me these things?

My daughter has a mobile phone - she's 12 years old - and that phoine lets me keep in touch with her as she's 250 miles away living with her mum. I don't need her mother's consent to speak to my daughter and I don't get an ex-wife telling me to fuck off. I maintain my own contact with my daughter regardless of how her mother feels about it. (Her mum is cool btw, never had any problems with her but I was just itterating the point about multiple phones instead of one stupid party-line).

As for movies, well, some of them were good, but some were the most boring load of bile I'd ever seen. Featuring old hags who cackled their way through like some sort of stereotypical down-trodden working class wife or some jumped up yah-yah wearing a cravat and punting down the Thames trying to impress some ditzy bint who's skirts he was trying to get under. What's all that about then? I prefer the plain speaking way of doing things now - like, "You gonna get nekid with me or what?" How many men got married in the old days only to find that on their wedding night he saw his wife naked for the first time and thought, "Fuck, shoulda married Margo."

All in all, the past has its plusses, namely that it's gone and won't be coming back. I prefer the present day and the promise the future holds. 50 years ago we didn't know what we know today in terms of science and technology, so it's reasonable to assume that we also don't know what there will be 50 years from now. My only regret is that I probably won't be around to see it.
