"Birmingham beckons, a mundane training course enforced by my employer. " You have my sympathy, if only they could invent a type of ear piece which could change the accent of the people around you. 😁

"Damascena" I'll second that! Or if you're on the south side, Mortons in Dickens Heath is nice (and right round the corner from me as it happens)

"Also had a nice time at six by Nico It was a themed tasting menu of very nice food but not really a solo visiting place. A sort of Agatha Christie style murder mystery themed dinner that you solve with the clues delivered with each course. It was clever. I think it’s a circus theme now. Yes it was delicious but I don’t know if it was worth the price tag, probably better if you’ve got company or as a group." • I think perhaps for another time as part of a group, but I'm doing solo, Eva. 💌

"Will you be based in the city centre? " • Yes, I'm looking around the New Street area.

Yes, because being a brummie is a race of people, same if people say something about us Geordies, they are racist

"Birmingham beckons, a mundane training course enforced by my employer. You have my sympathy, if only they could invent a type of ear piece which could change the accent of the people around you. 😁" You know, of course, that Shakespeare very probably spoke in a Birmingham accent? It's absolutely certain he didn't sound like Gazza.

"Oh and if you’ve the time to travel a little and want to burn a big hole in your wallet Satori The best sushi and Japanese food I’ve ever had. Every single bite was divine. But wow it was also one of the most expensive meals I’ve ever eaten. " Kyoto is pretty nice too and far more reasonably priced. In fact I'm going to recommend Kyoto.

"Birmingham beckons, a mundane training course enforced by my employer. However, can any of you fine coterie recommend a decent place for mid-morning brunch? I've been to The Medicine Bakery but am looking for something equally appealing, something new and something central." I agree that Damascena near the Cathedral is a good choice. Or there's Dishoom near the Town Hall if you fancy a spicy brunch and perhaps a Breakfast Martini, which might make the training course more bearable.

Even when they have left they still love the homeland Nero sorry i cannot offer an up to date opinion. Purnell's was great but that was pretty coving era

Admittedly just a quick Uber or slightly less quick 50 bus from city centre but not the handiest.

"I usually stick to Medicine for coffee/pastries or Dishoom for chai and a double bacon nan. But Nero, you should explore beyond those boundaries and report back." • Y'know, RTG, I can be a creature of habit: The Medicine Bakery is awesome in every sense, the food, the vibe and the contemporary decor. But I feel like I need to do justice to some of the kind recommendations that have been made.

"Faculty does great coffee, but it’s very much a ‘quick stop near the station’ kind of place. If you’ve time for a contemplative pint I recommend The Old Contemptibles." • For a quick coffee it would be fine. I try and avoid the near-the-station coffee shops because of the quagmire of people with strollers and 'cases and the hurried 'feel' about such places. I wish to linger.

"I really like Cherry Reds ❤️" It’s a 5 minute walk from New Street but far enough to not be a station place. Quirky mismatched furniture, great food and they took an admirable stance against racists

Definitely wipe my suggestion of Grand Central Kitchen off your list then. I don't know if Cherry Red is any good but it's certainly quieter that side of the station.
