Bit of context… I went to the cinema knowing nothing about the film at the time. It was national cinema day so all films were £1 (yes I’m old). Thought it was a cool gangster style movie the scene… went to see Dusk Til Dawn. Selena Hayak dancing on the table and then turns into a vampire. Mind blowing! Made me not want to know about the synopsis of movies for years !

John Wick 4. The action scene in Paris where John uses a shotgun with dragon's breath rounds. It blew my mind when the camera started panning up and you get a birds eye perspective of that entire scene. It's one of the most unique, creative action scenes I've ever watched.

Ballerina. The action scene with the grenades in the weapon dealer's shop and the flamethrower action scene in the town at the end. Again, both scenes were unique and creative.

‘My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next’ - Gladiator.

Literal shivers down my spine. Even as I type.

Paros Texas - Spoiler alert

The one-way mirror scene in Paris, Texas is widely regarded as one of the greatest scenes in cinema. Directed by Wim Wenders and written by Sam Shepard, it is almost entirely driven by performance rather than plot.

By this point in the film, Travis Henderson (played by Harry Dean Stanton) has finally tracked down his estranged wife Jane Henderson (played by Nastassja Kinski). She is working in a Houston peep-show where customers sit behind a one-way mirror, speaking to the women through a telephone. Travis can see Jane, but she sees only her own reflection.

The first time he visits, he is overwhelmed. He can barely speak, asks awkward questions, apologises, and leaves. His pain is still too raw.

The following day he returns.

This time, instead of looking directly at Jane, Travis deliberately turns his chair so his back faces the mirror. He cannot bear to look at her as he begins to speak. In a quiet, almost hy p no tic voice, he tells the story of “a man” and “a young woman” who fell deeply in love, married quickly and had a son. At first it sounds like someone else’s story, but slowly every detail reveals it is their own life together.

As Travis talks, he admits things he has never been able to say before. He describes how his obsessive love became possessive, how jealousy and alcohol consumed him, and how he became frightened of losing Jane. He confesses to humiliating and controlling her—even tying a cowbell to her ankle so he would hear if she tried to leave at night. Eventually, after trapping her in the house, everything collapsed in fire and violence, destroying their family.

Jane initially listens as though she’s entertaining another lonely customer. But as Travis mentions the trailer they lived in and other intimate details, recognition dawns. She whispers his name. Her expression changes from professional detachment to disbelief, then grief. Kinski says very little, yet every emotion passes across her face.

Near the end of the conversation, Jane switches off the lights on her side of the booth. The mirror ceases to be a mirror, and she can finally see Travis sitting behind the glass. For the first time in years, they truly face each other. There is no anger left—only sadness, regret and love that has survived despite everything.

Travis tells her where their son, Hunter, is waiting in a nearby hotel. Rather than trying to reclaim his family, he quietly steps aside. Jane reunites with Hunter while Travis watches from outside the hotel. Once he knows mother and son are together again, he drives away alone into the night.

What makes the scene so extraordinary is that the one-way mirror is more than a setting—it becomes a metaphor. For years, Travis and Jane have been unable to truly see one another. Only after Travis stops hiding behind anger and tells the painful truth can they finally look at each other honestly. Harry Dean Stanton’s restrained, broken delivery and Nastassja Kinski’s almost wordless reactions make the scene feel devastatingly real, and many critics consider it one of the finest performances ever captured on film.

Two violently epic scenes that are interlinked...

The infamous shower scene in Psycho and the main fight in Raging Bull.

Scorsese was such a fan of Hitchcock's classic the main fight in his boxing epic follows the shower scene precisely. Both have the exact same number of shots and each shot lasts the exact same length of time to the millisecond!

No, that is one of the Spaghetti Western trilogy though. A Fistful of Dollars & For a Few Dollars More are the other two. All great but TGTBATU is epic.
