Amazing how he and Sharon Maughan made instant coffee somehow sexy and desirable with the very clever ads. He was the model of the self-effacing but suave man many of us aspired to at the time, as gawky unconfident teenagers.

Amazingly despite my wife making me watch the entire span of Buffys I never once connected Giles with Nescafé Gold Blend man until we went on a Wikipedia search for what else he'd been in, and the penny that had been nagging me finally dropped. I made her watch all the ads on YouTube, which did take a little less time than the entire Buffy story arc, and convinced her she'd done the right thing marrying an educated and smooth English bloke (she's American)

TBF only Tim Curry truly deserves the iconic tag, although I'm sure Anthony was also great (and I'm off to do an image search of him in lingerie now )

Saw him as the prime minister in Little British live. He was happy to send himself up in the big gay finale.

He fairly dampened a few armchairs when those adverts were on

I had the privilege of meeting this fine actor about 20 years ago and he was a true gentleman.

Nescafé Gold Blend won’t taste the same from now on. Those ads with him and Sharon Maugham were legendary.
