It's a combo deal. The sacrifice he made is just as much a part of it as the resurection itself.

Happy to be working and its quiet.

Belive if you wish but nothing in the bible makes sense or is for real.

I struggle that so many people still follow this fictional character.

Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Its a pagan holiday.

Enjoy your eggs.

When you consider the death and destruction, unleashed onto innocent victims over hundreds of years, all created by man’s greed and corruption, all in the name of religion, with no serious attempt made by the ruling allegedly religious leaders of any of the many and various formats of religion l find it impossible to have any respect for any of them.

But l do respect the views of those who do believe.

With a very limited response of a simple "I disagree" is pretty telling that your field of educated expertise, no matter how highly educated you may or may not be, is not specialised in historical figures of religions and faiths. So I did not question your overall level of education, just the field of expertise it is in. It's all in the wording above.

Following up with you used the very clichéd "I'm entitled to my own opinion" when trying to combat something that has proof as a fact further solidified it is not your field of expertise.

Facts trump opinions, and facts don't care about feelings.

Talking of facts, there are no facts to prove the existence of any god, similarly the are no facts to disprove and as it is impossible to prove a negative that seems unlikely to change?

Respect for the views of others, either way, would be the sign of a mature electorate.

After many hundreds of years of controlled indoctrination by clever and wealthy, at whose expense one might ansk, authoritarian leaders it is perhaps no surprise that religion still holds so much sway around the world.

There was a preacher named Jesus in first century Judea, who hailed from the town of Nazareth.

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, another preacher in first century Judea.

Jesus was regarded as the Messiah by his disciples.

The names of the Jesus’s twelve apostles are generally accepted, especially Peter and James.

Jesus was crucified on the orders of Pontius Pilate.

After Jesus’s death, Peter and several other disciples became acquainted with Paul, who became an avid supporter of Jesus’s teachings and authored the earliest known Christian texts

Based upon what is known, cross referencing, mentions in multiple scripts and records etc the above is viewed as true in that based upon evidence, and logical deduction.

As I said originally what the Bible says, and what Jesus did in his most famous of "feats" can't be proven and likely are extreme exaggerations of what did actually happen or simply made up to further the texts. But the man himself, based upon all evidence and methods for checking available, he did exist.

For a while even Pontius Pilate was thought to not even have existed until an inscription was found dedicated by him.

"

Jesus is an interpretation of the Greek name Yesuus which in Hebrew is Yehoshua or Joshua and was actually quite a common name. Now whether you believe in God and what the Bibles says or not, there is some historical evidence that their was someone called 'Jesus' who was quite a controversial figure and religious activist.

All over

I don't usually post on many of Shag's threads as I often find there is a little bait thrown in and also only some very selected posters ever get replies. Having said that and not really being religious myself, I do love Easter as you may have gathered from other threads. What I find below the belt though imo is mocking specific people's beliefs whatever they might be. For some, Easter is even more important than Xmas, for some just a spring festival, for some just an excuse for more chocolate. Whatever it is, so be it

I don’t think anyone is mocking Christianity in isolation?

There is much apathy and distrust of pretty much everything these days, although governments and religions of all variations do qualify themselves for both.

That is not knocking believers, particularly Western based believers, who do, by and large present as decent and tolerant people.

I have been thinking a lot about my Christian roots lately and while I'm not overly religious I don't think that having Christian values and beliefs is a bad thing

It's sad that people are mocking Christianity...and Religion because for some their faith and belief is all they have and we never know the journey people have had which has shaped their beliefs

Belive if you wish but nothing in the bible makes sense or is for real.

I struggle that so many people still follow this fictional character.

Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Its a pagan holiday.

Enjoy your eggs.

Jesus isn't fictional.

It is to many people. I have little respect for religion, but I do respect what religion means to some people.

The bible is fiction in parts but Jesus actually existed.

I disagree.

I mean you can disagree all you want you are factually wrong. There are scholars that are far more skeptical and educated on the subject than you are, across multiple faiths that agree Jesus as a historical figure did exist.

His feats may be highly exaggerated, but the man was real.

Did 'they' agree. It's a possibility that Jesus existed but not as we remember him in the stories told in the bible.

There cannot be anyone, scholar or not that has any proof that Jesus existed.

There was a preacher named Jesus in first century Judea, who hailed from the town of Nazareth.

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, another preacher in first century Judea.

Jesus was regarded as the Messiah by his disciples.

What I find most curious is your use of the word 'known'.

It's not enough to say something for it to be true.

It is not 'known' that Jesus existed. It's a possibility.

Genuine question:

I know there's obviously loads of different ways of interpreting religious things, and there's loads of denominations, etc.

However, I was a wee bit surprised to see people in here saying they'll be going to church, etc.

I didn't think swinging would be the sorta thing that Christian people in the UK get up to.

What am I not understanding here?

Yes, "known" is pushing it a little, there is some historical evidence that would support parts of the story, including there being a religious activist who was crucified, caveat the fact that with religious leaders/activists claiming they could perform miracles was not unusual and still isn't and that crucifixion was a common for of execution at the time. Jesus did not exist, or should I say, no-one in the middle east at that time was called Jesus, it comes from the name the Greeks gave him, his real name was likely to have been Yehosua (Joshua) which was a common name. Also, he wasn't a Christian (controversial I know) he was a Jew, Christianity started to take hold after his death.

Crucifixion for the Romans, was a particular form of brutal execution reserved solely for deserting soldiers & rebelling 'servants' (can't use the correct term here)

In the social-class-consciousness of the culture, crucifixion was the lowest of the low. It meant in effect that you were less than human.

There seems to be some argument about the actual nailing bit, as the method of dying was actually a slow, agonising suffocation, as your body weight pulled against your lungs & slowly crushed them.
