My current mean machine: Mazda CX-30. Costs £45 a week in petrol. So for me, seriously economical.

Had one other decent car a DS4. But the last one of those. After it hit 50k, mileage wise. Started to fall apart.

Wasn’t necessarily my favourite car, but by far the best value & ridiculously reliable was a 1989 Ford Sierra 2.0ltr GLSI Sapphire.

I paid £150 for it, as it had a damaged bonnet & the cam shaft had gone.

I replaced the cam, rebuilt the cylinder head and then owned it for a fault free 3 years. I drove it the length and breadth of the country as I was in the military.

Sold it for £100 after 3 years and bought a Sierra 2.8 V6, which was just as good just not quite as economical lol.

My eskort rs turbo, I had 2 rotten ones and found a good shell from the scrap yard and made one with the best of both bits buying whatever new I could for it, stripped it to bare shell painted the underside and insides rhen assembled to a rolling shell and had the outside painted professionally it was cossie imperial blue then built it all up using new uprated parts wherever could and converted it to efi using a scrap Orion. Did it all after a breakup which made me even more attached to the csr, sold it not long after my son was born to one of my best mates on the condition I had first refusal if he ever sold it which he didn’t, I still have the odd dream about it now really wish I still had it

Tried making enquirees to have it fixed further afield, but given we were not allowed to leave the county at the time, and the place I had it kept decided it had to go, it ended up in the scrappers.

My Honda 59 plate Civic 8th gen. Bought second hand and I had owned it for 10 years myself. Just a fun drive, right size for my needs and solidly reliable. Sadly I lost it last year as the gear box went (a bit of know weaknesses). I would have got that fixed as the rest of the car ok. However I was taking the kids on holiday in a few days and needed a car fast. So saddly I had to by another car and scrap her .

To be fair I've really enjoyed all the cars I've owned over the years. Never bought a car I'm unhappy with. I'm very conscientious when it comes to picking the right car.

Had a Subaru WRX with pro drive mods. With the exception of the Evo FQ43O it was the fasted unadapted car 0-60 under £150,000.

But the car I have now is the complete opposite, build for comfort and maxed out with toys and gadgets.

I’m not sure which one is “best”. Best is a fluid concept.

Audi Q5 sportback. BMW 520D estate. Both cars were a pleasure to drive, comfortable, quick when needed, refined when not.

Honourable mention to an Audi A4 1.9tdi estate and Volvo V70 2.5 tdi. I had both as much older cars. The Audi was faultless. Sold it with 1/4 million miles on the clock, still on the original clutch, never broke down, fantastic fuel economy but quick enough on demand. The Volvo had a bit more plasticky interior but the engine was phenomenal. Happily returned 50mpg on a motorway run and would shrug off a tow with ease.

Now it all depends on what people class as best

I’ve had some fantastic cars in my life

My 1st car being a mk4 1.6 cortina that I quickly swapped for a mk1 xr2 then worked my way through the whole xr range

I’ve had BMW’s mercs Range Rover jags Ford Vauxhall (omega was a dull looking but so comfortable)

From dull repmobiles to high performance motors

But genuinely the best motor I’ve ever owned was a vw polo 1.3 s reg

I paid £350 and it went forever

I repeatedly abused it trying to break it to no avail

I only bought it as a stop gap run around whilst my Range Rover was broken

I owned it for 3 years and literally taxed moted and put petrol in it and it never missed a beat

So easy to drive and went ok too

And I sold it for what I paid for it !

The best isn’t always the fastest or prettiest or expensive

There is sometimes a diamond under the pile of shite

"Ford Capri 2.8i Special. Great roar from that twin exhaust.

Oh sideways power & noise. What a car. I never got further than the 2.0 GT. It still went sideways well though.

Us capri owners invented what they now call drifting. The funny thing is we put so much effort into stopping it happen. Now they spend fortunes on making it happen.

The irony is deafening haha.

Mr

I had a mk 3 20L s, your right about the sideways driving lol. Wish I still had one though..."

I had a 3x2 council paving slab in the boot of my 2.8!and that still didn’t stop it going sideways

First car I had was Vauxhall Corsa automatic which had a “go faster” button - it would give a wee boost of energy when on the M8 from Glasgow end, trying to get past a large lorry…. Press that button and the wee car grew wings 😂

I bought a little Nissan Micro for a couple of hundred pounds years ago (the square shaped one before it went bubble shaped). Low mileage, perfect condition and I loved it. Finished work 3 days later and went back to the car park and found it cordoned off with police tape and smashed to pieces. Someone had written it off while I was in work xx

Very nearly 20 year old Vauxhall Agila 1.0, boot was tiny, but with rear seats down it was cavernous. Loved that little car, was gutted when it had to go as it became unreliable.

Never had a car since, or before, that ive enjoyed so much - including my current car which i bought brand new!

My first car back in 1994 was a little Micra. Brand new, so no repairs or problems for the 3 years I had it. It was waiting for me outside my house when I passed my test.

This might sound odd but a SEAT Ateca 1.4 excellence. It had a decent amount of power thanks to the turbo, but could also crack 50mpg thanks to cylinder deactivation. I did over 50,000 miles in it and it never let me down.

Mazda Bongo was my all time best shagging wagon.

All the seats could be folded continously flat over 3 rows.

Didn't even need to get out and back in!

Japanese young couples live at home with parents until marriage, giving rise to some innovative 'day van' designs.

My current Honda is similar in concept.

Best: My current car 2019 Hyundai Ioniq 4 not much to look at, but ultra reliable and comfortable journeys with smart cruise control. My fwb has said that repeatedly how she likes the car as a passenger.

Worst: VW Passat, nice to drive but ultra unreliable. Had problems from beginning to end.
