A heavy metal crowd

So me n the Mrs go to a lot of gigs. Yeah we're the original from way back. We look loads smarter than we did back in the day, but the mind is still full of mosh pits & punk ethics.

We've been to thousands of gigs. And the ones we feel most comfortable in are the ones that have very loud guitars in them. There's a feeling of utter friendship amongst that crowd. It's like mates you've not yet met.

Is it just us, or do others get that sense of community at these events?

I'm not so much into heavy metal, although I dabble, more into alternative rock/indie and quite like the heavier side of that. But a gig is generally a load of people who share a common interest and that can bring with it a great community.

Having been to all sorts of gigs over the years, I have to say that the smaller venue metal gigs are the best I've had for atmosphere etc.

It is like a big community, everyone has a good time, you meet new people, etc

It's strange how you can be singing along to a song and a guy nearby singing too can suddenly be your buddy out of nowhere.

When the 90s Metal scene in London was popping, I was there 🤘🏽

It’s dead now. But you’ll occasionally find me at a retro club night

Grew up in the late 70’s early 80’s near to West Runton Pavilion in Norfolk ( long closed I’m afraid), the owner of it and the adjacent pub had previously been involved in the music scene in London, and had contacts for all the bands. I was fortunate enough to grow up watching early Motörhead, Girlschool, AC/DC, Def Leppard, and so many more in. Still love live music even now, even though it requires a mortgage to purchase a ticket 🙀

I have been to, and worked, festivals of all genres and I go to download pretty much every year. Sadly not this year, cant see scooter haha but its just there is a greater respect of crowd belonging and the unwritten rules of the mosh that gets extrapolated into just being good people I think. It might be also that this music is generally older and more accustomed to crowds, as RnL is terrible to go too and so much trouble every year, V festival was the same.

Sure, does not matter if 60k+ at Donnington rock festival or a few people in a pub. All gigs have their community spirit.

Never known a bad atmosphere at a live music gig, no matter the genre of the music. Really looking forward to Powerwolf, Hammerfall and Wind Rose in March which is our next one.

Comedy gigs on the other hand can turn nasty quite unexpectedly

At 63 I leave gigs for the young 'uns . Back in the day I was most of big metal bands but my favourite era and venue was the punk days at The Portehouse in Retford . The atmosphere there has never been beaten .

Committed and devoted head banger here, I agree with you OP, of all the places I go, gigs are the one place i feel totally safe at. I never feel like there’s going to be any trouble.

Been to a few gigs that have been lairy, more the kind that would attract football fans (and I’m one myself!) but personally never had any problems. Generally the rockier the gig the more folk look after each other except the odd tit who is all elbows. Overall one of the more fun pastimes.

I agree too, the metal crowd are awesome and really accepting of everyone. I even had the pleasure of being on a ferry last year when a load were heading to a festival, what a brilliant fun group they were.

I do like a good gig too, the only thing I struggle with nowadays is how far ahead the tickets come out, so I miss them. I've even seen ticket sales for tribute band gigs that are nearly a year away.

We love the local metal scene here, always seeing the young new bands and having a blast

Got a split lip at last gig going to hard haha. The mind doesn’t know the body is growing tired yet sadly lol. Always jumping in the pit first and having fun.

My son's first gig was Motley Crue when he was 8. I don't think he had ever heard so many F bombs in his life. Probably wasn't a good idea in retrospect!

to Rock n Roll!

There is. A feeling of "togetherness" for sure. Attending gigs as a whole is pretty much always a positive experience. The only gripe (minor at that) in that audiences in huge cities around the world, especially huge capitals that always attract all the major artists can be a bit complacent and stand with their arms folded in a "Go on... entertain us then" indifference.

Some places though (Glasgow, Manchester, Belfast and Hamburg we're looking you mainly) crowds can go absolutely mental and party all night!

I go to a lot of gigs in Manchester, it can be a great crowd. Birmingham is my usual, again good. Glasgow is on my list. Crowds aren’t quite the same these days (I blame the phones!) as it takes a while to get going but still good fun. Pixies is a particularly good gig nowadays though, crowd is all ages and the kids really get that old mosh pit energy going, makes me feel 18 again.

Have hosted huge rock n metal events in swinging clubs for years now and always one of the friendliest crowds of all the parties I've done

I'm not a metal fan, but have been to many gigs over the years - 99% of which I've gone to on my alone.

I've never felt lonely though and have always chatted with people around me, and often been 'adopted' as their bestie for the evening.

There's nothing better than being in a room full of like minded passionate people.

Totally agree, been to hundreds of metal gigs and in general everyone is so friendly, especially when seeing more niche bands. It's rare to meet people in everyday life who have even heard of some of these bands, so being in a room with hundreds of people who love them as much as you do creates a real feeling of togetherness.

Anyone got any gigs planned in the coming weeks?

I went with my son and daughter in law to see Ghost last year, the crowd were amazing, chatted to some random people, danced and sang along with people I don't know and would probably never meet again

We even got invited to an after party by a bunch of teen Goths, we declined their kind offer saying for them to party for us because we are far too old to be part of the cool crew

Though it did make me feel like a fossil when my son said his party days are over and he just wanted to go home

Used to go to a lot of gig's at pub's in High Wycombe in the late 70s and 80s, also Friars in Aylesbury where I was a member, saw loads of bands there, then plenty in London, mostly Camden Roundhouse, Brixton Academy, Hammersmith Palis and Hammersmith Odeon, great time's, still follow The Stran@lers around when they tour

Always looking for company before or after gigs, when people share the same energy at gigs it can be so hot, I am going to Metallica 3rd July at the London stadium, staying in hotel in Stratford, then Wet Leg 10th July at Alexandra palace park, staying in shepherd's bush and System of a Down at the Tottenham stadium on the 13th July, staying in Premier inn Tottenham Hale.

If any couples or ladies are going say hi, maybe we could meet before or after shows?

Rich x

Been to many gigs. Metal and hard rocks have the best crowd. Rap has the worst. Ice Cube and his buddy kept giving me uncomfortable looks when I saw them a couple years ago but I was on edge. Had the row to myself then next thing I know 2 guys stand either side of me. Then one of them tried picking my pocket so I was ready to fight. Probably why they kept looking at me

Was genuinely tempted to see Ice Cube but decided better of it. Think I'd stand out a mile at a rap gig and draw unwanted attention 😂

I saw him when he toured with cypress hill. They were all brilliant but I did not like the crowd. Funnily enough Cypress opened the night and the first song they played was Metallica's enter sandman. Everyone singing along to it then the dj mixed it

I grew up a rock and metal guy but remember going to see House of Oain and Cypress Hill and getting slung out the exit for being too wasted.

A mate was on the balcony with one of Cypress Hill who said I was the most wasted person he'd ever seen.

For the record im pretty straight edge these days ha
