Somewhere In The Ether…

Can video games really be scary?

Oh yes they can!

Good folks, what are the scariest examples you have played?

I’ll reveal my pick as to the all out scariest later in the thread (I’m hoping that one of you will list it first) 👍🏻😜

"Can video games really be scary?

"

Oh no they can't...

I feel the same way about video games as I do horror films. I enjoy them but they don't get me hiding behind the settee.

Some good ones for atmospherics:

F.E.A.R.

Doom 3

Alien: Isolation

(the last one came closest to raising the hairs on my chest)

I disassociate really easy.

My brain knows it isn't real, so I don't get scared.

Although try playing games like panicore or lethal company, with somebody that high pitch screams at the slightest thing.

That shit makes me jump

Well they can. People have different levels of having immersion or being able to disassociate.

Scary and horror movies do absolutely nothing for me what so ever outside of the odd skilled jump scare which is few and far between these days. However I'm able to immerse myself in a video game, especially a good one, so much that it feels like I'm there. Am I going to break down in terrified shock? No but tension and fear symptoms are definitely pressent.

Jurassic park: Survivor is coming soon. Generally along the same lines as Alien. Though I expect not quite as freaky due it the xenomoroph being it's own level of scary but still the same premise I think.

Project Zero 1 and 2. You had to take photos of ghosts before they jumped out and killed you.

Alone in the Dark series.

Nightmare Creatures and Tenchu had some pretty scary moments as enemies came through the dark at you. Similar to Silent Hill with the fog.

Max Payne and Bioshock also had their jumps-scare moments.

Half Life 1 and 2 used to scare my sister to the point that she stopped playing. I had to enable cheats to make it easier and reduce the fear factor. Mods, cheats and level select can be fun, but they often spoil the original challenge of the game.

The best cheat that I think improved gameplay was enabling blood mode in Mortal Kombat on the good old Sega Megadrive. I still remember it. A,B,A,C,A,B,B. ("Get over here"). Thank you Games Master aka Patrick Moore and his monocle).

Ah ha! Yes, the Project Zero (aka Fatal Frame) series was my top choice 😃😃

Once played, never, ever forgotten…. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Armed with only a camera for defence and playing as a character who only slowly jogged(!!!)

The series was as creepy as all hell.

PT was very spooky and about the only game I'd say was scary.

Silent Hill 2 definitely had its moments. It's all about the atmosphere and soundtrack though.

Outlast was scary at first but got boring/tedious quicky.

Cultic was 100% an uncomfortable game at times and I'd recommend it for anyone that likes retro FPS games.

Dead Space/Doom 3 sci-fi horror/action... Definitely not bad.

King Kong The Peter Jackson Movie Game. It's not scary but those centipedes were horrible.

Skull hotel, although I ended up uninstalling it as it annoyed the fuck outta me.

- 'At Dead of night' had me on edge all the time.

- 'Dark Deception' also worth a shout

Best one I've played so far this year has to be 'she was 98' it hurt my chest.

Alien Isolation for me.

The alien can’t be killed, you can only hide, distract, or run from it.

The sound design is terrifying.

The oppressive atmosphere feels tense and stressful. It makes you uneasy, like you can’t relax. You feel trapped or weighed down by the environment

Some of the Commodore 64 and arcade games had heart racing moments as the joystick, buttons and steering wheel had been overused to the point that the game had a delay in reacting to the buttons pressed. Pressing jump in Prince of Persia and the darn thing walks straight off the edge to the spikes below. The horror of knowing your player might not do what you ask it to.

I always remember watching a friend play the third for the first time, sat in the dark and there's a bit where a corpse gets thrown up out of a floor hatch. We both jumped out of our skin.

Think Alien Isolation but it's mid 1990s graphics, and the enemy cannot be seen other than a motion detector ping.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’m presently playing a rather creepy one; Seijun Drop which is free on Itch.io (loads of great horror games to be played on there by the way).

Basically, you’re chased around a building by something that resembles a sort of cross between the supernatural Japanese entity, Teke-Teke and the little ghost lad from The Grudge.

It’s kind of frustrating but fun 😁
