Do you waste food?

a Primark shoebox in Leicester

I was terrible at wasting food… things going out of date and being binned.

To be honest I’m still pretty bad at it. My worst habit is not planning what to have for main meals, so I buy stuff ‘just in case’ I fancy making it and then make what I fancy on the day at the time I need to make it.

I’m trying to get into the habit of date checking stuff in the fridge to see what needs using up first… hopefully I won’t be throwing away half a cow at the end of every week.

Not a great one for the date thingy, so long as it does not have a beard it tends to get used hence not much gets wasted here

Yes, but would love to find a small composter (so I can do something decent with the stuff I throw out), but the DIY places only appear to do great big things that would take up half my garden (slight exaggeration), but I only have a few pots that I would need the compost for..........

Anyone any ideas?

xx

little house on the praire

Im quite good, i do a weekly shop and check the sell by date before i buy it. If its near its date it either gets frozen or made into something.

I do have an obsession about not eating out of date stuff though. Im of with the "best by date" but not use by

You can freeze green and red top... I used to when the kids were at home. Saved popping to the shops every bloody day!

Notting

I waste food in the fact that i cook lovely dinners - for 6 when there is only me.

I will then fridge the rest - and then it will sit in fridge til it goes off and i have to chuck it.

Hate myself for it - but cant help it.

Sometimes i will only eat 3 mouthfulls of said dinner - and not cos it tastes horrid - just cos i dont fancy it once its cooked.

Should take it to the neighbours eh!!!

Dont shoot me down, food issues as a kid ok!!!

Sometimes I have to admit that we do waste food due to poor planning of meals

If I plan properly not only is there less waste but its also works out much cheaper,I don't always plan ahead though

Maybe one of my new years resolutions should have been to plan the dinners a week in advance instead of other things I had on the list

Chris Evans (I know, I know) was on Andrew Marr on Sunday morning laughing about how nobody could get to their w*rk during the week but the shops and supermarkets were mobbed on Saturday.

my dog steals everything so it's not a waste.... it's a race to see who gets to it first.

Not been out of the house since NYE is there really panic buying out there ?

probably not in this area the snow in our street (small side road never gritted) barely covers the tarmac would imagine the main roads are all clear)

Anyway food waste, tons of it here I am sorry to say, having a guest house I have to buy fresh stuff every weekend when we have guests but sometimes they don't wanna eat it and sometimes they go for the cooked side and not eat the croissant, yoghurts, pancakes, waffles, cold meats, fresh fruit, cheeses etc so much of it gets binned.

Quippet of info:

Today as every working day, Ration Packs were made up for the army, these consist of 10 man packs for 1 day or 1 man pack for 10 days, those packed today go into a rotational storage system, those being consumed by troops today were packed 25 years ago, those made today under normal usage (no big wars) will be consumed in 25 years time.

Most tinned and dry good will keep that long, flour and cereals have been known to be good for over 100 years.

Sometime back the government said you have to have a use by date on all food, the food companies realised that putting a date 100 years hence might make people stockpile at low prices so they put 1-2 years on them, this way you wont stockpile too much but its not so short a time to make you reluctant to have too much in the cupboard.

I try not to waste food as much as I can.

I do not pay much notice to sell by date to be entirely honest.

If the food has already treated to prevent degradation, such as smoking, wind dried, has preservatives in them etc., then I would definitely eat them way past their sell by date.

I have a few opened jars about in the fridge. I would continue to eat/use them if they do not go furry.

I keep forgetting what's in the freezer, and every so often I would chuck things out that have been there for over a year.

I try to avoid throwing vegetable and fruit away as much as I can, usually only when they have gone furry!

BTW, when I cook for other people, I would always use fresh materials within their sell by date!

I was always bough up not to waste food, if my mum put it on my plate i had to eat it cause of all the starving kids in Africa to be honest with you i think thats why i always had a weight problem and i took my eating habbit into my adult life with me, if it was on my plate i ate it, now days i dont care, i paid for it if i want to throw it out i will, i try not to buy to much because im not one for wasting just because i can now days, but i have to be honest, if i cook something then decide i no longer want it i dont keep it and warm it up i just bin it
