£5 Notes

Apparently people are being triggered by the picture of Winston Churchill on the back of £5 notes and the bank of England are considering changing it.

What the fook is wrong with the guy who led us through one of the greatest victories in Europe?

Can I just say, if anyone is triggered by this, can you please forward the notes onto myself.

Mr F.

I roll my eyes at anything that starts with "apparently"

Cite your sources

The current bank notes were mostly designed (with some noticeable exceptions) over 50 years ago. The bank of England are currently consulting the public on a full redesign of all the notes

It's not about anyone being offended about anything, it's recognising that maybe other people should get recognition after half a century...

By replacing a cash note with another? That seems like an awfully round about way of achieving this.

Well why fix something that’s not broken

Use the notes until they need replacement and then possibly add someone who is worthy of being on the note (like new notes and coins with the king)

If it’s changed just for the sake of change

Because people find it easier to roll over and submit rather than argue a point.

The faux outrage brigade are too quick to point fingers and start labelling people as racists or left wing, right wing, trans phobic, xenophobic and so on and they are happy to start a smear campaign towards anyone who disagrees with them.

These people are then happy to plaster all sorts of shit in social media and basically ruin lives and careers just to further their status as professionally offended.

So people are scared to get into it and will happily stand back and watch art defaced, statues destroyed and the likes for fear of reprisals.

There was a lot wrong with him.

HOOOOOOWEVER... there were worse, there currently are worse, and there will be worse in the future.

Regardless of his personal views (some of which are disgusting) the guy knew how to lead a country in a war... And listen to the people around him who knew how to do it also.

I think, instead of removing historic/cultural persons, they need to just talk about the good and bad.

He was an important person for THIS country, so small gestures like removing him from a fiver or pulling a statue down won't achieve anything but build resentment.

I was curious to find these people that are outraged. I wanted to read both sides.

So after googling

Churchill

Churchill £5 note

Changes to £5 note

Churchill outrage bank notes

Changes to bank notes

Historical figures bank notes

Outrage historical figures bank notes

The last one finally found someone upset. Gb news and the daily mail.

They are upset that the “woke are upset”… but I can’t find the original folks that were outraged by the notes.

I haven’t been able to find any other outrage other than those claiming there are people outraged via those two sources. Multiple links on x or similar shows the same threads with people being upset at these folks that are offended…. Haven’t found one source that was offended yet.

Of course there are sources out there that call out Churchill for other reasons but none of them are related to bank notes

Churchill, like most historical figures in more recent time have a light shone on all their actions both positive and negative.

Does he deserve to be on a bank note? Yes, absolutely, but he is responsible for many things that would call into question his still being on there in more modern elightened times.

Perhaps him being removed should be replaced with not a person but a symbol remembering everyone and the sacrifices of world war 2?

They are upset that the “woke are upset”… but I can’t find the original folks that were outraged by the notes.

I haven’t been able to find any other outrage other than those claiming there are people outraged via those two sources. Multiple links on x or similar shows the same threads with people being upset at these folks that are offended…. Haven’t found one source that was offended yet.

Well, other references had been made to specifically right wing media outlets claiming outrage. I thought a left wing actual comment on the actual problem would be more relevant to what's being discussed.

But, if you want to use it to make digs, it won't lower my expectations 💜

Based on radio, TV and print data, Reuters ranked GB News above Channel Four News, Channel Five News and CNN, with our position up from eighth position a year ago.

Online, GBNews.com is ranked the sixth largest news platform in the UK, tied with Telegraph.co.uk. The report placed our website above Sun Online, The Times Online, ITV News Online, Mirror Online, Yahoo News, and CNN Online."

Seems to be winning on live TV broadcasts. That's much less of an achievement than it used to be with both TV and print losing audience heavily to online.

Perhaps it's more that leftism is moving with the times rather than holing up in decrepit archaic strongholds.

The only TV news outlet I would even begin to qualify as slightly left of centre is probably Channel4 news and that's a stretch too, it's just a bit less biased. I don't really think any mainstream media TV news channels are anything but centrist/centre right. The BBC/ITV/SKY are certainly anything but left wing. You can't label everything that's not right wing, left wing. There's a whole centre ground.

As someone with an interest in left-wing politics (oh no, I'm a woke leftie snowflake) I tend to watch independent online news sources like Novara Media, but if I do watch TV news its usually Channel4 news.

I wasn't aware he single handedly beat the Germans, but 🤷‍♂️.

I mean.....as soon as the war was over what happened? From the Imperial War Musuem archives.

"From May 1940 to May 1945, Britain had been governed by a coalition government, with Conservative MP Winston Churchill as Prime Minister. Churchill had proved himself to be a popular leader during the Second World War, so he was confident that the Conservatives would win this election based on his wartime success.

Instead, in one of the biggest electoral swings of the twentieth century, the Labour Party won the general election decisively, winning 393 seats, while the second-placed Conservatives only secured 197. With an emphasis on social reform, the Labour Party’s manifesto was strongly influenced by the Beveridge Report and included a commitment to full employment, affordable housing, and social security and health care for all.

In contrast, the Conservative campaign focused on Churchill’s popular appeal, lowering taxation, maintaining defence spending and encouraging private business interests. While Churchill acknowledged a need for social reform, he argued that this should be done privately rather than by the government, claiming that Labour would need 'some kind of Gestapo' to implement such reform.

Despite Churchill’s concerns, the Labour Party’s emphasis on social reform clearly appealed to many voters, who gave Labour a landslide victory at the polls and a clear mandate for change."

"You mean the racist, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, victim blaming, anti-union white supremacist who supported famine, use of chemical weapons and hate everyone that isn't white, rich and English

Luckily for me I don't have any money

No, I mean the greatest man to lead this country through the atrocities of WW11, without him you'd now be speaking German, embrace your £5 notes 👍

Despite Churchill’s concerns, the Labour Party’s emphasis on social reform clearly appealed to many voters, who gave Labour a landslide victory at the polls and a clear mandate for change.""

I understand all that, and said he 'lead' not single handidly did it!

"Not a single note is the same as 50 years ago.Just focusing on the £5 note. Back is Winston, only since 2016,front is the King since 2024 and every note is now smaller and polymer.Every other note has changed dramatically over the years "

Personally, I'd prefer our banknotes to carry on having historic figures on them (go on...stick Maggie on next, that would REALLY piss the left off 😆) rather than arty-farty shit or something a five year old has doodled for a Blue Peter competition.

Anyway, how's Charlie's health at the moment ? Surely there's no point churning out fresh designs until we need new banknotes with William V on them .

Errrr, no we f'kn shouldn't !

That's the ONE thing we can thank Gordon Brown for, stopping us from joining 2001ish when Blair wanted to go in at all costs.

You CAN'T stick two dozen plus countries with different needs, different economic systems, different priorities, and different values into a one-size-fits-all economic system and expect it to work.

"I was curious to find these people that are outraged.

As always I’m happy to be corrected.

I've seen it on various TV media outlets, and was a 30 minute phone in about it yesterday on BBC Radio 2. Sometimes you need to just stop using Google 👍

Give me Google over GB News or the Daily Mail any day of the week......🤷‍♂️

Oh, you mean the biggest news channel in Britain?

😂😂😂😂😂😂

I mean according to the relevant media data it's 19th.

Behind such giants as Money Savings Expert, The Manchested Evening News, Yahoo! and even Good Food and Birmingham Live. 🤷‍♂️

But OK..........🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂😂😂

*source Ipsos Iris, featured in a Press Gazette article, 31st July 2025

You can actually use Google properly for this one, just copy n paste that line below into it 👍

Is GB news Britain's biggest news channel?

You know Barb only records TV usage right? And that TV isnt the only way that people view news? Statistically it may be true for older people, but the majority no access news via alternative sources than traditional TV routes.

I typed in what you suggested.

It led me to that Telegraph article you're possibly referring to, but also to this.

"And this year’s report concluded how, based on weekly reach, GB News has soared to become the UK’s fourth biggest news media outlet.

So I'll stand by my view that it's not the biggest news outlet by far. 🤷‍♂️"

It's still Rupert Murdoch owned shite, that negates it of any value matter how many viewers it gets, they're just sheep.

I would disagree with you a bit pickle, he wasn't so much a white supremacist as a British imperialist.

He hated black and brown people true, but he also hated other white Europeans, not just the Germans, but the french and other Europeans on the allied side, he also had contempt for women in his own country, he was a well known mysoginist, he also hated the poor here, despite the poor doing most of the fighting and dying for his war. All of whom were pretty white.

That’s just one quote of his that I’m familiar with. He believed in racial hierarchies. The fact that he also believed that whiteness was not possessed by all white groups doesn’t make him less of a white supremacist. In fact it can be argued it’s also pretty text book white supremacist.

The plight of women and poor people also doesn’t support any argument. Classism and misogyny have existed in blatantly white supremacist times. Can think of Douglass’s writings about suffrage in the US for example. Or the spread of white supremacist myths and rhetoric even at times of great class inequity in Britain. The argument Churchill isn’t a white supremacist is a weak argument if we’re being generous

I agree, I was trying to make the point that he wasn't just a racist white supremacist, he did look down upon other races, and did believe in a racial hierarchy. He was a racist, mysoginist, who also hated lots of white people too was my point. He seems to have hated poor people in general who he considered weak simply because he was born into money.

"The only TV news outlet I would even begin to qualify as slightly left of centre is probably Channel4 news and that's a stretch too, it's just a bit less biased.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend Ground News. The website tries to post news article that are neutral. Instead of having a Left or Right Wing bias. It is pretty good. And I enjoy the website.

I’d have Churchill with tears in his eyes watching down on the small boats landing on undefended beaches.

With the script

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,

You can almost guarantee the people they are consulting will by a majority vote against keeping Churchill.

Put it to a national vote and I suspect, but might be wrong that a winning % would vote for it

My friends 14 year old son thinks Churchill is only an insurance dog character.

Ps I appreciate that Churchill being a hero is mostly (not always) related to the age you are and it might well not be relevant to you.

The Royal Mint change the designs and pictures on banknotes regularly and have recently held a public consultation on what should go on the next set of notes. Suggestions were:-

notable historical figures

nature

architecture and landmarks

arts, culture and sport

noteworthy milestones

innovation

Replacing Churchill is nothing more than this. Turing will be replaced as well - just as "triggering" for some, I would imagine.

" Mr F. wish him and Enoch Powell wer still here rather than the two arseholes starmer and khan

Being a racist isn't a good look.

I'm not talking for the person you threw this comment at, but myself, I make no excuses for being white and I'm proud of my countries history and I'm also proud of all those brave souls who fought for everyone's freedom in WW1 and WW11, and I'm also proud of the great Winston Churchill who led us to victory!

If anyone doesn't like that I don't really care, it sounds like a you problem to me.

Mr F. "

So you have no problem with the overtly racist comment then?

I couldn't care less who is on a bloody banknote, I have a problem with the gullibility of people who swallow the absolute shite spewed out by GBeebies, Talk TV, Farage, Daily Express, Daily Mail etc. They play you for their own benefit, not yours.

It's THAT which is the problem.
