Do you have a bit of another ethnicity in you?

My grandads full italian so i guess that makes me a quarter italian 🤷‍♀️.. unfortunately apart from the colouring there is nothing else italian about me ... sob

Every year we have to go round my grandparents on his birthday and help to squash the tomatoes for his special birthday sauce to go with his meatballs its a bit of a cute tradition.

What other heritages do people have?

And do you embrace it? Speak the language? Follow any traditions?

Predominantly English/Scottish, but if I skip a couple of generations back then its French and somewhere in the Mediterranean (details are a bit sketchy)

The Scottish is embraced with the gatherings and their traditions,I learned to dance briefly too.

Nothing exciting to reveal, here. My ancestors were the most unadventurous home birds ever. Except the for one who moved from Birmingham to Hull. That was a shocker to learn about in the 1820 census *needs a lie down*

The Deep Dark Woods

Don't know who my biological dad is so no idea on that front.

Both my mums parents are Irish much more affinity with the Irish culture than British culture, my grandad was ginger as fuck so I think definitely ethnically celtic😂 but there is a lot of dark colouring (hair & eyes) on my nanas side and some olive skin which I didn't inherit. So we think we have some Spanish or Italian blood in us somewhere.

I'd be fascinated to do one of those DNA ancestry tests but I don't what it give a private company my DNA.

A lot of them. I'm a very mixed, mixed race woman and aside from the standard cultural identity crisis in my teens, I love the various things that make up who I am.

Embrace them? No. It would be a constant celebration. I do love little nods, learning about culture from family, the food, the rites of passage, all of that. And going on holiday and seeing family. How diverse it is. The last big family reunion was wonderful - the cultural similarities, the chiding from one side for being too plump, another for not being plump enough.

My parents and grandparents are 100% Irish, not sure before my grandfather on my dad's side. He had a tough childhood which I never was old enough to be told about and not many around to now tell me. But my dad spent most of the year looking very tanned so not sure if there is some other influence there. Mums name is an old Irish name so possible right back to Irish royalty or clans. She always joked with Dad she should have made him change his name.

I'm a Punjabi Indian. First generation born here on my Dad's side. I've not really done any research as to how far back that goes.

To be honest, I'm not really as traditional or involved in that culture now as I was growing up and sorting of rejected it for a while. I have found myself coming back round to it though and having a new appreciation for it.

My make up as far as I know is Jamaica, Barbados, Portugal, China. Obviously being Black and having Caribbean roots there’s a whole lot of (likely West) African in me but you know… shit happened which makes tracing that shit difficult.

I was always under the assumption people from the Caribbean would find it difficult to fully trace where their ancestors came from. You know because of the past etc.

Yeah I have no idea of my African ancestry at all. I know about my Chinese Great grandad who lived in Jamaica and I know of my Portuguese ancestors through tracing surnames and oral histories. Oral histories are so important to the preservation of history, honestly. But yeah, it’s hard to trace to anywhere in Africa and then trace through tribes or names over there.

I'm aware of my mother's side of things as they go back for generations. But I did a DNA test to find out more about my dad's ethnicity which was interesting.

I'm mixed race and I definitely relate to those who have posted above about some of that confusion. I grew up and at the same time was being told I wasn't (my ethnicity) enough or that I was too much. Some people look at me and think I look white so I must be white and then I have to navigate other people's expectations of me. There are elements of nationality, culture and ethnicity which I definitely struggle with on top of those things.

Dutch?? You must be extremely tall then. Something in the water with the Dutch to make them giants 😂

Nah, I'm maybe slightly taller than average for a woman at 5ft 7. My mum was only 5ft 3 though and my nan 4ft 11. My dad's side is the Dutch side and all the men on that side of the family are 6ft 2+ with the tallest being 6ft 7.

Oh wow. I like the Dutch. They speak their mind and not afraid to say what is on their mind.

That's definitely a trait that has been passed on in my family. Plus an outrageous sense of humour. My nan passed away last year at 98 and she remained outrageous until the end and I love her for it.

Oh that absolutely makes total sense.

Sorry to hear about your Nan. I lost my Grandad this year. Grandparents are such a blessing aren't they. Sending all my love 💛💛"

Thank you. She lived a long and eventful life and made the most of it. I miss her but it was her time. Sorry about your grandad.

I love that!

I am first language Welsh, my Mum came from Flint. My Dad was Irish, born in Cork. Came over when Grandad got a job building the railways...

So I guess I am of a Celtic heritage...I did trace my ancestry, found family going back to the 1700's on my Dad's side. Trying to find Jones in Wales was a bit more challenging 😂

My father's side has some Greek, but watered down. Unsure about the rest.

My mother's side, a mix of all sorts, from what I can remember being told. Cornish, Romani, Scottish, Irish. Couldn't say what percentages, though.

I identify as Cornish, overall. My name has "Kernowek" in it, which is "Cornish" in the language. I only know a couple of phrases, sadly. I'm awful at retaining other languages and despite having a good teacher, I failed miserably lol.
