Does money make you happy?

Jump to newest

By *hagTonight OP   Man

From the land of haribos.

I think it does that up to a certain point, there was  reasearch done on this and it was how money contributes to happiness when it helps us with basic needs, like, safety, food, education medicare stable housing, but once those things have been met, more money doesnt necesairy make you happy, but it can probably help a bit. I agree with that.

I heard one saying that he wished he had less money as it would make him happier as he already had to much of it he said. I guess as he doesnt now what to spend it all on.

It would be interesting to see what your view of it is, does money make you happy and do you also agree it does that up to a point, up to what point would that be?

Never had enough money to make me happy tbh. But love the idea of if you have 5-10million then it gives you some kind of freedom.

Maybe like 500k to be mortgage free or something. Might help too.

Other than the obvious answer, as i would love a chance to find out. Lol

I do think money and financial security does bring levels of happiness because you then have less general worries over life.

Not sure i would like a stupid amount of money. But enough so you dont have to worry about any unexpected bills etc. And enjoy things like holidays and days out more etc.

Happy might not be the phrase I'd use but it certainly helps. I've spent virtually everyday for last 3 years worrying about money.

If I had 10k I wouldn't necessarily be happy but I'd be able to pay off my debts and put money into my daughters account. I'd be able to breathe 😔

Try this little exercise. I made it up but there is probabbly a better, “real”, version somewhere.

Imagine you have unlimited money and you would never have to worry about it again. You have several houses wherever you need them with staff to help cook, clean, and take care of chores. Transport is never an issue as you always have a chauffer to take you wherever you need. You have a personal stylist who sorts out your clothes and knows the styles you like. You have unlimited monry and so you have also given this amazing lifestyle to those you love and are close to.

Take a moment to close your eyes, and imagine this is your life. How it would feel for this to be your everyday norm. Visualise it and imagine how you would walk, talk, and feel.

Now consider if you would be happy. If so, what else would you want in life? If not, what do

you think would bring you happiness?

There are many miserable rich people and many happy poor people.

Far more important to your happiness is family, friends, health and how you live your life.

Enough money to not have to worry about money reduces worry, so closer to happy.

Money alone won't bring joy. And while it's entirely possible to feel happy in a moment while homeless and hungry it's unlikely to be sustainable long term 💜

Yes very haha not so much the money but the freedom that comes with it, since having kids I’ve always feared being poor and not being able to give them what they want and never wanted to be one of those people where one missed pay and the whole house of cards falls, the trade off is I’ve never had nice things myself no nice car ever no fancy holidays haven’t been abroad in 20 years and I’m certainly not rich for it but now my kids are nearly grown up I can start enjoying the freedom that working hard saving and paying off my house and flat brings, I fully booked up with work this year but next year plan to take at least a week off between every job especially in summer. I wouldn’t have the freedom to do thst without managing money well the last ten years, my main regret is not starting earlier

On the flip side I have been happy when dirt poor, back when I had just been sacked in disgrace from one of my few jobs as an employee my partner at the time wasn’t working as I’d been making enough in my job so she didn’t have too so our income was zero we’re living off savings it was school summer hols so kids were off and it was probably the best summer we ever had but the stress was still there

I hate money, and having any excess makes me feel almost dirty. I donate often to multiple charities, and buy random necessities and gifts for people in my life, to get rid of what I don't need.

I hate how necessary it is for basically everything, I hate the way it corrupts people, and I hate that profit is prioritised over taking care of society. It doesn't bring happiness, but the lack of enough of it causes misery.

I never ‘get rid’ of money that I don’t currently need, I save it, for the day when I inevitably will need it, I think that is the responsible thing to do, as it lessens my burden on society.

Money is just a tool. It can be used to make your life better and it can also end up making your life worse.

If you spend your life chasing it - either because you don’t have enough to live on or because you simply want more - then it will destroy you. If you can live within your means then it will make you happy.

Having no money worries would make life a lot less stressful. Having my own home and never having yo move again is something I would love but is highly unlikely at this stage. To never have to worry about bills etc would make life so much less stressful. And in that case happier. And I'm not talking about having millions to live a life of jet setting I mean enough so that if a bill suddenly comes in you're not stressing about paying it or buying food.

As they say money can’t buy you happiness but you can sail up to it in a fucking big yacht…

Money helps but I’ve travelled the world all my life and found remarkably happy people who have literally nothing and I know miserable rich folk. You can’t feel happy all the time, you need the stresses and strains of life for perspective, strive for contentment.

Money can’t buy time

Be thankful for what you have and how far in life you’ve made it… many haven’t and don’t

Don’t buy material things, buy experiences

Remember you only get 4000 weeks, if you’re lucky, don’t squander them

Enough to not worry about bills. The more you have the more you want and then I see some people rather than pivoting to enjoying what they made, they just continue working into their 60s-70s which does make me wonder. Living on the breadline is a very specific kind of stress. It eats up almost every thought and ounce of energy you have, to the point where there’s barely any space left in your head or heart to notice or appreciate the positives in your life. You don’t even fully realise how tense everything feels because you’re just pushing through, going through the motions of living.

So yes, I think money is needed for happiness. At least up to the point where you’re not constantly in survival mode.

Having too much excess money as a young man with no obligations led to a 15 year gambling addiction for me. Fruit machines. But if I had that same level of excess income now, as a widowed single dad, I'd treat it very differently as I'm much older and wiser. So I think where you are in your life is a major factor in how you answer this question!

I _emember 15 or so years ago imagining the 'dream salary'. Now that very near 6figure has happened am I happier? No. Am I happy? Yes.

With the cost of living being so high it makes no difference.

I do like being able to shop and eat and cook what I want to, but should we feel successful because we can buy fresh produce and higher welfare meat and fish? In fact it makes me feel guilty because everyone should be able to afford healthy fresh food. Eating well should not be a privilege. 🙁

If I had loads of money there would be more bucket list things I'd do. So I think money buys you opportunities and experiences but equally I'm happy bumbling around living my life and enjoying every day.

Being content with the small things allows you to be happier.

Over the years I have sat with good friends and through varying points of my life with money and without.

And the fact is we always have a good time regardless of money that we have at that moment.

So to answer the question....sign up to my .....and pay me ....lol

Having enough money to be able to do the things you need is wonderful. Having a bit more so you can do the things you want is even better. The mistake is having money and allowing it to become part of who you are! That's why so many killed themselves when the recession came! I have been broke and in debt, not a nice place, but I got through it.

To quote the late George Best -

I spent a fortune on booze, fast cars and fast women.

The rest I just wasted.

It all depends on how we define happiness. People who don't have much money are not necessarily unhappy. Likewise, some people who have money are always seeking to have more money. Some who suddenly have money struggle to cope with it. I would say its all relative to a person's expectations in life.

"I think it does that up to a certain point, there was  reasearch done on this and it was how money contributes to happiness when it helps us with basic needs, like, safety, food, education medicare stable housing, but once those things have been met, more money doesnt necesairy make you happy, but it can probably help a bit.

Tonight’s euromillions is estimated at £131 million.

Winning that would make me very happy.

Would certainly help with the sleepless nights at times, but depending on the amount, it may create unhappiness

I would enjoy a certain amount of wealth that would allow me to;

- Not have to work anymore.

- Allow me to pursue my passions.

- not have to look at a price tag if I like something.
