What would you do if you heard a major argument next door, & listening to someone getting beaten? I said to my partner... Please help them...& He ignores it.....

What would you do

My nan’s spare room.

I’d probably call the police. Or if I thought it was safe knock on the door to disturb the situation.

Call the police to help. I've never understood why it's a man's role to involve himself in something that could place him in danger when the woman sits back and does nothing too.

Why not?

Ringing the police is the only answer.

What on earth would you expect your partner to do?

Intervene now. Start with something non-confrontational like “Is your wi-fi down?” And then “Who are you with?” to give someone a breathing space. If it’s more urgent, ask to speak to her about something like where she bought something from.

No but I'm trying to determine the veracity of this story because if someone was being beaten up next door to me my first thought wouldn't be to post on a swingers forum. I would be banging on the door shouting. Mr N would be intervening for sure.

Literally anything but try to carry on and ignore it.

Is the guy 'connected' or in the police himself?

There are always ways to report anonymously, record it and make it available to her later, interrupt the situation to get the person to safety right in the moment "Need them for XYZ... "

Get them access to exit strategies, shelters, help them start to prep and stash a go-bag, important docs and some cash.

And if it's the guy who's apartment or house it is I'd be looking a new place to live. Because that's never a single activity. That's a defect he'll repeat with others if left to it.

Have this near every day. The people are high as kites, say anything and you get drawn into a 'what's it got to do with you' fight. Police ask 'are you in danger' so then it's a 15-30min attendance by which time they've either left or see them and claim nothing's happening.

Council are basically useless as they want your name and address which means they'll then focus their bat shit attention on you. I can guarantee if it were anyone else, there'd be arrest but sweet FA is done.

Not sure the excuse that the police are slow is ever a reason not to call them if anyone is being 'beaten'..

The address might be flagged as others have actually tried to intervene by informing the police so further calls should up the response etc..

I think the fact that knowing that this is a police worthy call. And that arguments should not lead to physical abuse. And that other people have “heard” will lead the victim here to realise that they are a victim.

Being a victim is not a choice. Needing help is not a weakness. But sometimes someone is so beaten down that they don’t even know that they are worthy of help. And that their normal is not normal.

This could be the thing that sends that message to them.

So - in my mind always call for help for people that are unable to ask for it.

Regardless of which gender the advice would always be call the police, record any evidence you can and despite the temptation don't put yourself in danger.

Me personally I'd be outside playing loud music to attract all the other neighbours out in a bid to shame the abuser into calming the fuck down because there's too many people around. Buys time until the police arrive. But don't follow me you'll get in trouble 😉

The point was to highlight that we cannot make assumptions or be prone to conjecture.

It's interesting that a woman had inferred something similar, higher up this thread, but you didn't pick up on it, remonstrating me instead.

I'm an interventionist. Recently I was in a chemist and a guy, fuelled on drugs, was threatening the all female staff, with a chair. Being the big fat bastard that I am, I got hold of him and ejected him out of the door. Another male, also in the chemist then suggested I shouldn't have done that as he had rights.

I'm no do goober, but if a woman is potentially being attacked, or at risk of getting attacked, I'm stepping in 🤓

Coercion and control in relationships being made a criminal offence was primarily a move to include the abuse suffered by men in relationships. Physical abuse is less common in men but it happens.

In terms of physical abuse men are predominantly the perpetrators. We can go round the houses of how the genders ascert control all we like but abuse is abuse.

This argument about genders is getting off topic. There is abuse occurring. Irrespective of gender, what's the right thing to do?

"Call the police first, then go round and knock on their door, hopefully that would be enough to stop him abusing her.

...or stop her abusing him?

Why do men make comments like this? It's usually a man hitting a woman? So strange

It's often a woman hitting a man. Not as frequently but men are victims if domestic violence.

Stats and facts don't lie. I agree, men definitely do get abused, but not as much as women.

Recorded stats and facts? I wonder how many go unreported... domestic violence isn't limited to physical abuse, Emotional abuse, coercion and financial abuse all full under the umbrella of domestic violence....add that into the mix and I wonder if your stats and facts would still be the same

Yeah, you're right a lot of it goes unreported and I am not ignoring the fact that men do get abused. I have never denied that. They do and it should be addressed. If you honestly think it's on the same scale then you are very wrong.

I don't believe I am.....But thanks for your input 😂

Yeah, you're just a pick me nice to know "

"Call the police. Maybe go round and knock on the door. If I thought woman had bèen hit I'd make sure I'd stay until police arrived.

What if it's a man having the shit being punched out of him ?"

Same as my first answer. X

"Call the police to help. I've never understood why it's a man's role to involve himself in something that could place him in danger when the woman sits back and does nothing too. "

Totally agree… I’ve got involved a cpl of times over the years and it didn’t end good .. even got hit on the head with a stiletto heel, from the girl who was getting the abuse.. he abused her, I grab him, she hits me… call OB
