I think people just banter differently now. Banter is probably a lot more reliant on developed relationships now than before and probably avoid certain topics but it’s still out there.

Is there a difference? If you make someone upset, They probably didn’t take it as banter.

There’s a fine line you tread when ‘ribbing’ your mates and I certainly wouldn’t try it with people I don’t know well enough, and I think that good advice to take with you when posting or replying on forums.

I think like with every generation banter changes, I have different friends of different ages and the banter is very different. I wouldn’t say less enjoyable but it’s different and some things that some groups find acceptable others don’t.

But then I like having a variety of different friends and people in my life, it’s why I’m on fab, to find folk that are likeminded to spend time with!

With strangers it's a lot more difficult for sure.

Plus a lot of interactions are online or text form these days and the tone and context of a message can be misunderstood a lot easier than it is face to face.

I wouldn't ever indulge in personal banter except with people I know well these days, it's just not worth any drama.

Hopefully it is yes. It's not about being sensitive it's just very often people use the word banter as an excuse for bullying or attacking someone else and they think they are being funny.

Throwing insults at strangers isn't banter.

Conversation and witty exchanges is human and I agree it should be maintained as often we forget how to be with other people with so much of our interactions being digitized now.

And yes some people do take offence very easily and often on behalf of others and that is very stifling but is a separate issue in my opinion.

By definition, "banter" is a friendly, if brusque chat with someone you know that may become rambunctious and ribald because you are familiar with each other's boundaries.

You cannot "banter" with a stranger. This is not a woke opinion. When I was raised in the 70s and 80s, familiarity had to be earned rather than assumed.

Now you can TRY and assume familiarity. Nowadays you may get cancelled. But in my era, you tended to get slapped or filled in.

TL:DR Don't squeeze a stranger's tits and then claim, "it was just fun". We don't do that now. Donald.

I can give and take a bit of friendly banter and slagging, it was definitely an artform in Dublin where I grew up and the quick wit could leave you in convulsions laughing. But friendly is the operative word. If it's intended to belittle, hurt or shut someone down it's just meanness and not funny at all.

There's a line between banter and using jokes to slate someone. Most 'banter' isn't good humour, it's from one person about another, with the other person (for some reason) thinking they are making cute comments.

When you're putting someone down and laughing at their expense you've got to be able to take as much as you give, which I can guarantee the majority of guys can't - they'd take it personal, feel shit about, end up in a row or fight about.

Clever comments that deliberately challenge a world view are worthwhile.

But either way, you go to an office to work, not to get chatted up. Time and a place applies. If you get offended at a comedy club, you voluntarily paid to go there, so get over it.

At the office, you are not getting paid enough to have Derek hover around every morning and then have him hotdesk next to you whilst you grin and dig a biro into the back of your hand under the desk.

It's important to know your audience.

Your family and close friends will know you, your sense of humour and your personality, as well as your general attitude to certain topics and beliefs. They'll most likely know the difference when something is said in jest and food humour, with no motive or intention to cause offence or upset.

Total strangers won't. You may come across as offensive, unsympathetic, bigoted, and any semblance of humour can go out the window and be replaces by thinly camouflaged abuse and piss taking.

Which of course can be the intention in the first place. 🤷‍♂️

A good piss taker would know when to stop, for example when the piss taking isn't going down well or isn't appropriate.

You see it loads on here and if that person says stop, they get told they have no sense of humour. You also get lots of people having digs at others and excusing it as "banter" Maybe the person went to the HR for one of these reasons

I think people have become too sensitive. The ones complaining that they can no longer make racist, ablist, mysoginist and any other ist you care to mention comments. The ones who think it's hilarious to bully youngsters in the work place or people who are a bit vulnerable. He's been up in front of HR for a formal warning!

As I said, too many sensitive souls in the world.

Explain the logic in that?

Best he gets his union involved or at least asks for a formal investigation so HR can interview witnesses. That way he can have the formal warning removed from his file as from what you've said they didn't follow procedure.

The Mirror publishes some pretty offensive stuff regularly tbh. If someone was laughing and joking about an article then it's more than possible that there was also chat/conversation on the subject that could easily be deemed offensive/abusive. 🤷‍♂️

Definitely not beyond the realms of possibility.

For context just look at the comments section of any Mirror article on Facey.

Plenty of the remarks made on there are from people hiding behind anonymous profiles because if they said what they do in a workplace environment you can guarantee they'd be hauled in front of HR.

I think there are two distinct issues there. One is banter, whatever that is defined as... If however funny and harmless you think you are is being received as offensive... Whether you think it's right or wrong.. Its not banter.

The second is a nuch bigger and wider issue upon which I agree. The insidious leaching into our society and workplace of gratuitous offence taking, of minorities ruling what majorities do, the law cases, the money being made, the over sensitivity (the nhs fife case is a great example) certainly needs to be addressed. It's paralysing and needless. Life's unfair and no amount of legislation will make it so.

The source of the banter doesn't get to decide what someone else finds offensive or inappropriate.

It should be obvious anyway, if it isn't then the problem is entirely the source of the so-called banter, not the person on the end of it.

I think we have made men afraid now. Really. Was talking and couple years ago he would have been all over me. He still did but he couldn't say what he used to. I felt sorry for him were not strangers but it's weired. Are we not allowed to be chatted up anymore by our own people? That's sad x

Technically banter is an art which can take some skill so it doesn't offend and is purely humour without any judgement and doesn't involve taking the piss out of anyone as that isn't banter more like bullying but having a sense of humour whether dark dry or just slick 😝 is smooth

It's not something I engage in nor enjoy.

Fundamentally, I don't see the point of it.

If someone said something profound or meaningful, that would engage me, but banter (when it's not covert bullying and thinly-veiled nastiness) is of little merit or worth, I have found.
