"Banter ' a too and forth between friends who are ALL enjoying the laughs' still exists. What used to masquerade as banter is disappearing and so it should .... Too many people hid their racism, sexism, ageism , misogyny, homophobia , ableism , religious hatred and just plain passive aggressive nastiness behind the word banter..... we are slowly learning the difference. people can see through the ..... it's just banter mate....... it was just a joke .... it doesn't wash any more. Banter yes, thinly disguised prejudice ......no " What if you’ve never disguised your prejudices, is it still ok to crack on.

"Or have people become to sensitive . " Hopefully it is yes. It's not about being sensitive it's just very often people use the word banter as an excuse for bullying or attacking someone else and they think they are being funny. Throwing insults at strangers isn't banter. Conversation and witty exchanges is human and I agree it should be maintained as often we forget how to be with other people with so much of our interactions being digitized now. And yes some people do take offence very easily and often on behalf of others and that is very stifling but is a separate issue in my opinion. So I guess it depends on how you define banter and who it is between.

"No it isn't. Piss taking is a love language within my family, relationships and most of my friendships. Some people just use the word banter as an excuse to be cruel. It's supposed to be friendly, not real digs disguised as a joke or used to poke at people's insecurities. Even worse are those who use "banter" as a cover for being bigoted." Said it much better than I tried.

"With everyone being so easily offended these days I’d say banter is more frowned upon than it was, especially in the workplace and that pisses me off. 1/3rd of your day is spent at work and you can’t even have a proper laugh 🤷♂️ And I’m the boss Or are you just a chilled out entertainer?

"Sadly, lots of people think "banter" is just free reign to be a cunt and when someone doesn't find their toxicity funny they get "it's just banter, lighten up" Yep I can give and take a bit of friendly banter and slagging, it was definitely an artform in Dublin where I grew up and the quick wit could leave you in convulsions laughing. But friendly is the operative word. If it's intended to belittle, hurt or shut someone down it's just meanness and not funny at all.

"Sadly, lots of people think "banter" is just free reign to be a cunt and when someone doesn't find their toxicity funny they get "it's just banter, lighten up" Lazy comedy stuff is terrible. Clever comments that deliberately challenge a world view are worthwhile. But either way, you go to an office to work, not to get chatted up. Time and a place applies. If you get offended at a comedy club, you voluntarily paid to go there, so get over it. At the office, you are not getting paid enough to have Derek hover around every morning and then have him hotdesk next to you whilst you grin and dig a biro into the back of your hand under the desk.

"English wit is getting misunderstood. American values have taken route and people have now decided that looking at someone in the wrong way is a sue-able offence. Freedom of speech has all but disappeared. This country is every other country apart from England. I’m saying it as I see it. Hear it and feel it. Am I wrong?" In every word and thought. Yes.

"Banter is more difficult online than face to face. With face to face you have body language and tone of voice that is lost online. I'm an old fashioned guy who prefers a face to face chat." I agree with this, I can be a bit witty and dry at times and sometimes it can be read the wrong way online.... definitely better face to face in that sense.

"Seriously, before I started my own business I worked for a company for 10yrs and men, grown ass fucking men of my age, would go crying to HR over a bit of piss taking 🤦♂️" One mans piss taking is another mans bullying. Surely you understand that and where the line is?

"Seriously, before I started my own business I worked for a company for 10yrs and men, grown ass fucking men of my age, would go crying to HR over a bit of piss taking 🤦♂️ " A good piss taker would know when to stop, for example when the piss taking isn't going down well or isn't appropriate. You see it loads on here and if that person says stop, they get told they have no sense of humour. You also get lots of people having digs at others and excusing it as "banter" Maybe the person went to the HR for one of these reasons

That way he can have the formal warning removed from his file as from what you've said they didn't follow procedure.

Give us a couple of examples - within site rules - of what you'd consider funny banter... We can give you feedback The Mirror publishes some pretty offensive stuff regularly tbh. If someone was laughing and joking about an article then it's more than possible that there was also chat/conversation on the subject that could easily be deemed offensive/abusive. 🤷♂️ Definitely not beyond the realms of possibility.

Plenty of the remarks made on there are from people hiding behind anonymous profiles because if they said what they do in a workplace environment you can guarantee they'd be hauled in front of HR.

"Banter was in every workplace and a bit of fun to help the working week go quicker Nowadays. People are too sensitive, scared for their jobs . a bit of banter can get you the sack nowadays . If you sent a trainee for a long weight or a spirit level bubble ,filopean tube etcetera. Its Banter If the trainee was Asian or ethnic or female its then become racist or sextet . That's why there's no fekkin banter I think there are two distinct issues there. One is banter, whatever that is defined as... If however funny and harmless you think you are is being received as offensive... Whether you think it's right or wrong.. Its not banter. The second is a nuch bigger and wider issue upon which I agree. The insidious leaching into our society and workplace of gratuitous offence taking, of minorities ruling what majorities do, the law cases, the money being made, the over sensitivity (the nhs fife case is a great example) certainly needs to be addressed. It's paralysing and needless. Life's unfair and no amount of legislation will make it so.
