Just started reading a translated Japanese book and it got me thinking how many languages my Fab friends can speak.

Tell us which languages and how you came to speak them. Studied them. Lived in another country perhaps.

I was taught Welsh at school, but apart from some swear words I’ve forgotten it all😂

Brum - ish

I speak French fluently. My mother taught me as I grew up and I spent time living there.

German and Japanese passably. Learnt German at school and Japanese after getting into it learning the basics for a trip, in hope of knowing more if I get to return.

Sufficient Russian and Italian to get by. Russian I learnt for a previous job and Italian just fancied giving it a go.

I’m picking up bits of Portuguese at the moment and learning Irish.

Fully bilingual, use English and Spanish interchangeably. I even dream in English

My mum lived in San Diego during her teenage years and it was frustrating for her not being able to speak English (yes, even in Cali!) she told me she was dating this gorgeous Marine but the relationship didn’t prosper because of the language barrier. So she vowed her future children wouldn’t face that. She enrolled us in an American school where I grew up and I went to High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

It's very difficult. I know ex pats who've lived in Japan for 30 years and although they sound fluent to me and speak Japanese at home claim to be nowhere near fluency. I learned the basics but I've forgotten most of it.

Transsexual Transylvania

I speak English, Afrikaans and German, and I know a little bit of Zulu.

English is my home language.

I grew up in South Africa - prior to the end of Apartheid, it was compulsory at school to learn English if you were Afrikaans, and Afrikaans if you were English. Plus all TV was 50% Afrikaans, and of course I was in the army for a year, and that was dominated by Afrikaans. We also learned Zulu for about 4 years at school. I learned German at university and worked as a research assistant in Germany and traveled for about 5 months after university.

Despite the claim that it's easy to learn a third language if you're bilingual that hasn't been the case, but I've tried to learn a few words at least in every country I've visited.
