Gluten free diet

Just wondering anyone else tried a Gluten free diet for weight loss?

I'm not gluten intolerant just purely going to try this for weight loss.

So any tips advise welcome.

Don't bother with substitutes.

I went on a strict low fodmap diet, which also cut out the gluten as its a no wheat diet.

Rice and potatoes is gluten free so you can still have a filling meal.

I think if you cut out bread, pasta, pastry etc you naturally cut out a lot of calories, if you aren't swapping them for sugar rich food.

Done gluten free, it’s a lot more processed than it should be and you pay through the nose for a lot of it, I found it tasted not quite right too with the only thing that was really acceptable was gluten free chocolate which defeats the point, keto/carnivore worked best for me but good luck OP

I wouldn’t worry about gluten unless a doctor says so mate.

I would avoid any restrictive diet at all, just avoid the big hitters like take aways, sugary drinks and over snacking. But give yourself some leeway to answer a craving once or twice a week.

If exercise isn’t your thing then try to just up your movement level during the day.

I have to go gluten free/low fodmap at times due to IBS. It's very expensive and ultra processed if you want to eat gluten free alternatives.

You're better off just cutting out bread and pasta entirely (which is what I do a lot of the time) and sticking to carbs like rice and potatoes with meals, just eat them in moderation.

I don't think going gluten free specifically would help with weight loss, you can still eat sugar and other high calorie food. But cutting out bread and pasta would likely help if you're happy not having them at all instead of swapping for alternatives.

Potatoes aren't high calorie. It's what we have with them that adds to the calories.

I ate potatoes, chocolate and drank Lucozade and lost 3 stone.

Not found it made much different in my weight.

I cut down on my calories and started losing again.

More veg and potatoes with good protein.

Herbs rather than sauces.

But yeah, people sometimes dont count sauces or oils.

I didn't go gluten free, but I switched from white bread to wholemeal bread. I cut out mostly all sweets and sugary drinks (still had the no sugar ones) and walked 5km every other day. Lost 20 kg in three months

I have known a lot of people in my life who have been on 'diets' ranging from the infamous 'F Plan' to banana and coffee. Not one of them ever maintained the weight loss. The only ones who ever remained at a weight they were happy with changed their eating and exercise habits for good and lost weight slowly. The common themes were that the changes weren't drastic, were achievable and didn't involve limiting anything but portion size.

I've been a Coeliac for over twenty years now and can certainly say that sticking to a gluten free diet will not help you to lose weight on it's own, unless of course you are still calorie counting and eat a lot less of it. Being a Coeliac you have to pay through the nose for over processed foods too. Reduced calorie intake and exercise is the way to go.

Gluten free won't necessarily cause you to lose weight, you may digest food better therefore initially drop a bit of weight primarily from water and inflammation

Basics are calories in vs calories out but then where does those calories come from is the next step

A family member was diagnosed with coeliacs 16 years ago. He was quite a bit overweight then and after being on a gluten free diet ever since he is still overweight by the pretty much the same amount.

I'm not coeliac and haven't tried cutting out gluten but I had to give up dairy 12 years ago and lost a stone and a half in the first couple of months and that has stayed off.

A friend was advised to cut out dairy and gluten a few months ago and has lost nearly a stone and cleared up some health issues he was having.
