Considering getting my first tattoo. Going to get a Celtic tree somewhere. Just wondering from people who have them how much it hurts?

Depends where you have it done and your personal pain tolerance.

I’ve fallen asleep having one done it was quite soothing, but the one near my kidneys was a bitch and it’s mostly only line work.

Like having sun burn and being scratched by a cat.

You get used to it after a few minutes and tune it out (depends where you’re getting the tattoo I suppose)

I'm no expert as I only have one and I know it depends on location. But mine (on my upper back) felt like a small scratch and the only time I winced was around the edge of it. Definitely built it up in my head as being far more painful than it was. Good luck, OP.

Depends on:

Where

How big

Amount of line work and dark parts

I've had like 18 tattoos all over. 8hrs is the longest session I have done in 2 day. Your skin can get overworked and raw.

Every person is different wrt pain levels.

Depends on your pain threshold. Everyone is different. I sleep while getting tattooed.

Don't use that numbing cream as it can affect the tattoo.

Start of the outline will be most painful then if they add white at the end when you think you're done.

I just bought and picked a hand tattoo for my sons birthday,he has lots of other ink though,it is probably a painful one to start with.

Saying that ,my first one was on my pelvic bone.

I’ve got hand tattoos mate to be honest as mad as it may sound It was one of the least painful ones I’ve had , unfortunately all tattoos do hurt there’s no real advice as such unless you go down the numbing cream route

Like being scratched to start with, then you get used to it. My biggest problem was having a phobia of needles, yet I can watch them doing the tattoo and be fine. I’ve a large one on my upper arm/shoulder and it was done over 4x 4 hour sessions. Hurt a bit more on top of my shoulder, but was still ok.

Currently trying to decide what to have on my other arm

Really depends on the location of the tattoo, there's a few places I'd avoid for a first one. Chest,Adams apple, knuckles.

You can't go wrong with biceps or forearm for first ones 👍

After about a minute or two you get used to the sensation and barely notice it, the only place that was a bit sore was my stretch marks on my shoulders.

I find it relaxing and had days sessions most times.

I was always told that most tattooists wont do a hand or face tattoo on someone if it is their first tattoo.

Tops of arms, i fell asleep during. Back of leg on my calf scratched a bit. Across my chest really hurt. But once its started.. no going back !

It really is all down to your own personal pain tolerances and the way your body reacts to things.

I'm quite heavily tattooed already. With 2 gnarly big pieces booked in this summer.

It depends on the design, so the thickness of the lines, how much colour. Ie white pigment hurts lots because it goes last when your skin is all swollen and sore.

Also depends how heavy handed your tattooist is. Whether they can pull a long line and do a pass in one.

I tattooed both my legs myself and my last tatt I over worked the skin and it took weeks to heal properly.

Pick your artist carefully. Choose your design wisely. Placement is everything. Don't just nod and accept the stencil or design first time. This isn't like nodding at the hairdresser when you really hate it.

Drink plenty of water and eat nutritional food in the week leading up to your tattoo. Also exfoliating and moisturising your skin up to 24/48 hrs before your tattoo is a good idea.

Be prepared to have more than one session and don't over think it.

Maggie, (who will ideally never have her ankle tattooed EVER again.)

Chest was a spicy one just along the Clavicles. Ooft.

I jumped out my skin when the needle hit the side of my waist for the fairy dancing on my hip (top is just under boob). I was intending to have a pair, one either side. Suffice to say, I'm happy with one lolololol

The biggest tip I can give is research your artist. Check out their work online and make a consultation appointment to go over what you want. I'd liken a tattoo to bring scratched by a cat. As far as pain, like already mentioned, it varies from person to person. I'd recommend shoulder blade for a first tattoo, that hurts less than a lot of places

It depends on alot of things. Location on the body, pain tolerance, if the piece needs alot of shading, quality of the artist, etc.

My elbow was the most painful for me. My spiderweb was very spicy.

Hanwell, The Shades.

Agree with the placement and size/style. I always say it's like a dull scratch, but even so you'll get used to it pretty quickly. If it's a 6hr + (of which i have two) then it can get to you. But otherwise explain to your artist and they will walk you through everything. Beware though, they can get addictive. Good luck!

Its more uncomfortable than painful, just use numbing cream for the majority of the pain. If you are having a long session though, it will wear off and you'll feel it more towards the end.

You can't really say tattoos are not painful - because they are (tiny little needles being jammed into your skin which is a trauma) BUT and this is a huge but, it really depends on location, pain tolerance and also if you're male or female.

Oddly men have a much harder time at tolerating tattoo pain than women, I guess because women's bodies are designed to go through pain.

This is just a generalisation (don't want to offend anyone).

It also depends on placement of said tattoo as well. The pain is tolerable but I'd suggest as a first one to either have it done in stages, to test the area and your pain threshold or go for a smaller tattoo.

In my personal experience (and I always book full day sessions which is 7-8 hours of tattooing) places that swell a lot hurt more. So back of the knee was an absolute B , hands and feet swell massively. So it's not always the pain of during the tattoo but also the recovery.

I just had my neck done on Saturday and I thought it would be awful, actually wasn't. I've had my chest and sternum done (notorious for being painful) they were also fine. But I really struggled on my leg.

Men seem to say back hurts a lot but for women seems to be a breeze.

Just make sure you eat before and take a sugary drink with you to have during. They're 100% worth it and some will be easier than others .

Its about the position for sure. Fatty areas can smart a bit and going over bones or muscle around the shoulders in my case but everyone is different. Also depends on how sadistic the tattoist is....some put unnecessary pressure into the needle. Do your research, check the reviews and talk to people you know who already have them too

I was 18, the only reason I didn't get more is bc I was always pretty indifferent to the one I have, then and now. Only got mine to keep a friend company whilst she got hers.

I had one recently on my inner forearm and I'd say it didn't hurt, only took about 90 minutes though. While it was healing it was really uncomfortable, although I now suspect I'm allergic to the cocoa butter my artist recommended to keep it moisturised.
