I don’t drink anymore and I’m surprised by the reaction that gets. Genuine things people havr said to me

- that’s boring

- oh, did you have a problem?

- you must be a nasty d*unk

- people need to relax more

- come out with me I’ll get you pissed

Is it that big a deal, really?

I rarely drink these days only 3 times in the last year and a half the thought of waking up feeling like utter shit and wasting the entire day after a night out just fills me with dread, it’s hard finding social things to do though as all my mates want to do when they have time away from family is get hammered but honestly I wouldn’t care if never drank again as boring as that may be

I quit drinking a few years ago and it’s the best thing I did for my physical and mental health.

I personally don’t give a fk what others think of me quitting the alcohol it’s my decision and it’s right for me.

I used to get similar reactions as you've mentioned, I stopped drinking for a few years in late 20s early 30s.

It doesn't bother me if someone drinks or not personally, you don't or should i say shouldn't need a drink to have a good time.

I haven't drank in 5 years. Used to run hotels and pubs so was a big drinker.

I find it a real turn off if a guy drinks on a meet with me and then wants sex. There's something really creepy to me about one person being sober and one person d*unk and having sex.

So i find it really difficult to meet people.

Most reactions I get are " what you don't drink AT ALL?"

and

" So like, what do you do if you don't drink?"

Sit in an empty room with a glass of water and three heads apparently.

I stopped drinking completely for almost all of my 30s. Never had any comments really bar the odd raised eyebrow and comment about a sober irishman.

I drink again now but only occasionally and then its 1 or 2 at most. No one seems to care really. It's getting more and more common to not drink.

It's part reason I lost the my long term friends, they were big weekend and mid week drinkers. I didn't realise at the time, only when I moved that I wasn't drinking to enjoy a night out, it was more a game of last man standing. They're probably still at it

I have alcohol in my room and I see it every single day, but don’t feel like drinking, but if I’m with my friends then I lose count. If there is a good drinking partner and a good tea or catching up with things things can go out of control

I'm been teetotal by choice all my life. I've never once tasted alcohol and have no wish to.

It's not a religious thing and there is no family history of alcoholism. It was a decision I took as a teenager, in spite of the fact every one of my friends drank.

I've been told I'm not a real man because I don't drink and replied that it takes a bigger man to not rely on it.

I've been told by 2 different people that I'm lying about being Irish because all Irish people drink.

I've never had any issue being out with friends or work colleagues even when they are getting blocked they still respect my choices.

I have nothing against anyone who does drink and all my kids and siblings do but I have zero interest.

I’m in the same boat. When ever I tell people I don’t drink, they always ask my why and assume I had a problem. They can’t accept that I don’t like alcohol, being d*unk, or hangovers!

Also, I really really hate having to explain it to everyone. No one questions you when you tell them you’re going to pour literal poison into yourself and ruin your health.

Nah, it's not.

What's strange is that people only seem to react this way about drinking, never about smoking.

Never have I heard someone say "what, you don't smoke???"

I drink occasionally.

Whiskey usually, but I seldom if ever go out.

If it was a straight up choice between losing alcohol or coffee, alcohol would lose, no question.

Carlisle usually

I rarely drink, and if I do it's usually two to three as a maximum when it's time for a girly cocktail night.

The majority of people I know are either completely teetotal or have an occasional one or two rather than regular or binge drinkers.

If someone thinks I'm boring for not wanting to get hammered, that's okay. They can go do that with people who enjoy it instead of wasting time with my boring arse 💜

I cut down my drinking a lot this year. Someone close to me called me boring when I turned down a drink, and it really surprised me how much that comment hurt.

There’s so much pressure to drink alcohol it’s mad.

I’m not 100% sober, but I definitely hardly drink now. For example I had a friend over from the US for a week just now, and we didn’t have a single alcoholic drink the entire time and I didn’t even notice. It wasn’t intentional.

Once you stop drinking you realise that it actually didn’t give you confidence, you just thought it did.

Mr can take it or leave it. If he does drink it’s for the taste, not to get the effect. So it’s only ever 2-3 drinks and that’s probably only once per week.

Mrs doesn’t drink.

I've never been a big drinker, and as I tend to drive whenever I go out (can't rely on public transport and cabs are impossible to find here!), no one bats an eyelid when I don't drink.

As someone responsible for her own safety I think it's the least I can do to remain sober when I'm meeting up with people I haven't yet built trust in, and if anyone has a problem with me not drinking then it's definitely their problem, rather than mine!

I’m a single malt aficionado and my parents and I ( less so) have a diverse vintage wine collection. Having spend 8 months in the Middle East, I had to come off my habit of having a G&T at 17:30hr, half a bottle of red, and a few whiskeys or an Armagnac.

Also, my Latina partner was born with a raging thirst so I considered myself “sensible”. I calculated I must have easily had 40+ units a week, and that’s not good at all.

Anyhow: my libido went up, my cholesterol went down, my skin was better and my fatty liver and occasional gout improved significantly.

My GP said: whatever you’re doing: keep doing it. Back in Europe and here I’ll have a T instead of a G&T, a spicy ginger beer with loads of ice and lemon, or lemon water.

I couldn’t care less what ppl think, tbh: it’s a broad church.

Cheers!
