Our once mighty language has been under threat ever since Microsoft forced "Eng US" as default on our keyboards, but getting away from an entire generation using "Z" all over the shop, when did we start to use their phrases? It's a daily occurrence now to see someone on television say "often-times" - I'm sorry, but we Brits see no need to use the superfluous "-times", as "often" will suffice. It's nearly as bad as saying "math" when we all know the only acceptable version is "maths", or possibly the worst example of them all "Counterclockwise", Jesus wept. It's fair to say I'm "anti" Counterclockwise

Any other examples that make you shudder?

I think allowing our phones to be our own private secretaries hasn't helped. People don't have to really think about spelling as it theoretically corrects it for you, though there is a cerain level of self learning goes on on its part. My phone seems to have decided that "thst" is an acceptable word since my lazy thumb continually misses the a and hits the s, so now it just leaves it at thst

I don't give it much thought to be honest but one or two things do raise the occasional eyebrow, rolling of the eyes or tuts of disapproval. There are lots of reasons someone might not use the most appropriate words though so genetally try to remain indifferent as much as possible

Another thing I find unnecessary is the modern zealous desire to say words in the original language, which goes against how we've pronounced them for decades - Hyundai, Stihl, Skoda etc. For God sake leave them alone.

In a similar vein, people saying "No worries" when it should be "My pleasure, or You're welcome". There was never a question of worries being involved!

An Irish poster was pulled up on here a while back for talking about high schools despite the fact we have had high schools in Ireland, North and South at least since the 1980s.

Language is continuously changing and developing.

My parents berated my abuse of English as much as their parents scolded them and no doubt their forebears too. Now I cringe and roll my eyes at my own childrens Americanisations (is that a real word?)

What concerns me more is the loss of words, so much of the rich descriptive beauty and complexity of the English language seems to be being condensed down into abbreviations and text speech and the loss of punctuation.

I think the development of language is to be celebrated, each generation brings something new to the table and this creative use enriches the form.

But... Less is not more. This latest trend for reduction and simplification is in my opinion a sorry state of affairs, a backwards step if you will, rather than moving forward.

Social media has a lot to answer for. People's foibles were previously contained to their own sphere of influence - a couple of miles radius. Now if someone gains popularity online and speaks a load of shite, be it mispronounced words, incorrect use of words (when did sick become a good thing), or even made up words, they soon get picked up by the easily influenced younger generation who either don't know these are abominations, or simply don't care!
