Hi OP

I like to self care with my hotlist 👀but a more grown up response 😇 any activities that puts me in autopilot and that engages the right side of the brain, for example mowing the lawn, reading and drawing works for me, activities which helps me which off and Reduces anxiety.

The right side of the brain activities also Increases happiness, Eases physical pain,Makes you more resilient, Improves concentration And makes you more creative.

Out of interest OP what other activities help you?

Anything that involves getting out into the hills/mountains and nature. Mountain biking is my stress release, snowboarding, walks with friends. Doom scrolling through Fab forums can be fun! I’m a mental health first aider so have to really look after my own health but I have the tools and resources to help others which in turn brings me some happiness

Great thread op. Sadly it requires skill effort and practise and changing to better habits and I'm not strong at any of those. It's great to read what others do though and hopefully some ideas will help.

I like painting, I'm not very good at it but does relax me. Ialso go for long walks with my dog.

Self care is really important and many people only acknowledge their mental health when it dips and becomes mental ill-health.

I used to walk my children to primary school through the park every morning. They're in secondary school now and that's not a thing any more. I decided a few weeks ago that I will detour a few minutes after work and walk home through the park as it's just such a wholesome and pleasant thing to do, even though it is adding extra time onto my day. All of the pond birds have babies ATM 🦆🧡

Music and meaningful human contact is also a big wellbeing boost for me. I make sure I do little things that I enjoy here and there so that life isn't all work and no play.

I try and vanish for a while, the mountains are a favourite spot, just switch off and reset myself away from the craziness……. Have had a few medical things to deal with this year, and job role slightly changed so struggling a bit just now, my diary schedule means I won’t get away now until at least October this year

Mine is kind of complicated (cPTSD and lots of other stuff I won't bore people with). If people want to talk about mental health I'm happy to go into more depth.

But helpful stuff for here.

Communicating and getting stuff out of my head. If you bottle stuff up it spirals. Your imagination can be your own worst enemy and it is remarkable how many problems can disappear when you talk about them, write them down and get them out of your head.

Setting boundaries. Again this is big in communication. If something is hurting then you need to protect yourself. So speak up.

Exercise. If I'm not active I'm a mess. But I need a target I can't just go to the gym. This year it's the Tough Mudder Holy Grail on behalf of MIND (sponsorship donations more than welcome )

The other big ones are food and sleep. If you're not sleeping well or you're not eating regularly it's easier for the 'black dog/brain weasels' to get you.

It's a difficult one when you have a busy life and people relying on you.

I too like to have a bath to relax. Doing things where I have to concentrate, like reading aren't easy for me as I have adhd.

I'm long overdue some time on my own without being made to feel guilty about it!

I swim, take myself off shopping, go for a coffee but the best one for me and my mental health is crochet, it helps me massively, I can free my mind of everything and everyone and just concentrate on the stitches

I work from home which can get lonely, so I make sure I walk every lunchtime. I live in the country so don’t always see anyone but I just make myself think about other things apart from work.

I also take long trips on my motorbike, that clears my head and centres me a bit.

Reading that has made me a bit sad actually!!

Yeah, I think I'm pretty good at it even if it only distracts me for a little bit to focus my attention elsewhere. Going to the gym, walks while listening to a podcast, playing table tennis or going to a coffee shop to read. It all helps with that bit of escapism.

Good healthy food, regular exercise, good selection of friends who speak the truth to me, managing my calendar properly, getting out of bed early 6 days a week & doing some form of productive work or helping others, having a social life.

I'm having to learn how to do this having just suffered a crisis when my mind and body became totally overwhelmed and collapsed on me.

I've taken the time to read, watch tv and films, take myself out for walks, sleep when I need to and trying to eat better. Alongside that I'm also learning about myself through therapy, not always easy but a very necessary part of my healing so that I can learn how to prevent myself getting to the same state again.
