It is illegal to drive a car in the UK without a seat belt. In recent annual figures 200 people died in car crashes that could possibly not happened if wearing a seat belt.

Approx 10k a year die from alcohol related diseases. And yet we are encouraged to drink more alcohol.

Approx 30k a year die from obesity related illnesses and there is a big correlation between obesity and fast food. Yet we can't move for just eat, McDonald's, KFC, advertising encouraging us to eat ever more calories.

Approx 75k a year die from tobacco related illnesses and again...these are readily available in all supermarkets.

Death seems to be the ultimate threat when trying to motivate car users behaviour with seat belts.

Kind of weird where we are encouraged to put our focus.

How many people a year die after using illegal substances which are not promoted or advertised ?

How many people choose to take their own life ?

Oh but it's social to drink/ Maccers is cheap/I'm only going up the road....

People are stupid, some have an 'I'm invincible and I'll do as I please' mindset....

It's all fun until it's not and by then it's too late

I don't drink yet people think that's weird as it's not the societal norm. But I am quick to say that I believe alcohol is the most dangerous narcotic there is above anything class A because it hides in plain sight, in pretty bottles with quirky names and fancy adverts....just one won't hurt....Will it?

Well that's a very good point too.

Certainly more than the 200 a year from not wearing a seat belt.

That and the law changed. And people fought that tooth and nail until they didn't.

Needles gradually being pushed over with the sugar taxes and stuff. Things like double chunky chocolate bars and supersjze deals going was a good thing. But doesn't go far enough, how much will people accept removal of "my right to make a bad choice but it's my choice".

This has put me in a right good mood this morning

Could it be because those other things bring in tonnes of tax revenue perhaps?

Or the fact the companies that produce those products can afford to pay lobby groups to pressure the government into dropping any proposals about changing the law which mean they would lose money?

Its all about the money. As with almost everything.

I disagree with the tobacco one. There has been a huge effort to reduce people smoking over the past 20 years. Smoking ban, packs are covered with horrific images and statements of how bad they are for your health, branding is covered up, they're not advertised or sponsored anywhere. You have to specifically go to the counter and request them. They've been taxed heavily. Growing up you'd see loads of people smoking, now I don't know anyone that does.

Carlisle usually

All alcohol is advertised with please drink responsibly. And it makes a fortune in taxes.

Anti obesity campaigns are rife, but fast food is profitable and convenient, and it makes a fortune in taxes.

Tobacco is all labelled heavily with don't do this and covered in deliberately evocative imagery to put users off. And it makes a fortune in taxes.

Not wearing a seatbelt doesn't affect the economy. Best make that one illegal.

(How many people survived accidents where they would likely have died if not wearing their seatbelt?)

Welcome to the capitalist hellscape. It's nothing new 💜

But don't you think, if they were serious about it, they'd simply ban it? Like seat belts... Anyone caught smoking.. 500 quid fine. I mean tinkering around the edges is fair enough but for all the "initiatives" there are still so many deaths caused by it.

Banning it won't make a difference. If anything it will make it more dangerous like other hard drugs. It'll be great for criminal gangs though, they'll make them super cheap and readily available again. My point is that from where smoking used to be to where it is now has been a huge reduction and the number of deaths is trending down.

Im often confused by where we are encouraged to put our focus and have come to the conclusion that it's where it will cost the least.

Women who smoke while pregnant are encouraged to stop but can walk out of hospital wheeling their baby at car exhaust level along a busy street and nobody turns a hair.
