Listening to the local BBC Radio station today, one of the first things I heard was the inevitable and predictable list of schools that wouldn't be open today because of the weather and other related problems.

Then looking on the local BBC website, there is yet another list of schools that won't be open TOMORROW because of the weather. Tomorrow ffs ! It's still today and tomorrow's weather hasn't arrived yet.

Oh yes, 2 of them were closed today and will be again tomorrow because of 'problems with the heating' How many shops offices and factories close for 2 weeks and have to stay closed a bit longer because of 'problems with the bloody heating' ? Not many, if any, I'd like to bet

Am I cynical or is this becoming all to predictable ? The Xmas holidays started early early this year because of an outbreak of swine flu - it's best to close the schools early to reduce the spread - right! and last year they closed early for something similar but I cannot remember quite what it was. An outbreak of lazyness perhaps ?

So what with an early finish, and a late start, not a bad paid holiday for those poor old teachers eh ? and in 6 weeks time they'll be off again for another paid holiday.

But really, is this early knock off and late start just a little to much to be coincidence. I cannot think of any other industy in the UK where this would be tolerated.

Mine went back today....thank god.... 3 mile walk through the ice and wind...but they went.

I can remember as a kid, the school saying if the bus didnt turn up 15 mins after it was supposed to because of bad weather we could go home.

It was a long road so you could spot the bus coming a mile away....many a time we would see it coming and be counting down the 15 mins ( knowing it wouldnt make it to the stop til at least 17 mins past the time)....All the bus driver would of seen was 20 kids and suitcases bomb bursting back home lol.

Happy days.

Too bloody right, I remember the old cast iron radiators, most of which hissed and spat rusty steamy water at you - the old coal hole where the caretake bunged all the coal to keep the boiler working.

FFS they've got gas now - it runs it's bloody self and it still breaks down during the holidays

The only time I remember getting of early, was in the early 70's when we had the 3 day week due to the fact that the greedy bloody pitmen would not dig any coal out (look where that got them lol) and the power was turned off to certain sectors on a rota basis. We were sent home early then. Otherwise coughs, colds, sneezes, wet weather, snow made no difference - we had to go end of story.

Neither wonder we are breeding such a bunch of soft shites nowadays

I remember my daughters school only being closed for a day because of ice. In fairness the playground in front of the school was like an ice rink and dangerous. Thank God my kids are adults so that's no longer a worry.

its far more to do with the risk of being sued by a parent whose child has fallen and hurt them selves on the ice, than it is the kids being so different.

in our days ( omg i sound like my mum ) we had accidents ...these days theres no such thing if you can find someone to blame and get some cash.

a sad state of affairs !

But we had probably more snow and ice when we were kids and we were still allowed to play in it. The only thing we got into trouble for was making snowballs after it had turned to ice, and for creating 'slides' in the ice.

If it pissed down with rain were kept inside over playtime and we sang

songs or played games.

The main problem being that health and safety has gone stone crazy and the very well paid teachers will do anything to avoid extra duties such as supervising a class during a wet or snowy break time

Ours went back today and had the last day of term off before the xmas holidays due to the weather

The reasons were that although the kids live close enough to get to school, most of the teachers don't and could'nt get there due to the roads not being gritted or ploughed, our snow ploughs were sliding off the roads round here and crashing into ditches

So not enough teachers to keep a safe ratio of adult to child numbers meant the school was closed

Not to mention that 600 kids all having a snowball fight against 10 teachers meant they had no hope of winning

. Shops , offices and other commercial premises are not funded by the local council and can make their own descisions as to who will fix their heating and how much they will pay.

2. Swine Flu and Closing early to avoid the spread. Schools do not make these decisions they have to look at advice from education authorities and act accordingly.

3. An outbreak of laziness ? I can't comment. Whose laziness ? The parents who don't want to tolerate another day with their own offspring ?

4. Not a bad paid holiday for poor old teachers?? Teachers teach - they don't make decisions as to if a school will open or close. When children are sent home teachers continue to work be it at home or in school. They will be assigned other duties.

5. In six weeks time they will be off again ? The holidays are for children. Teachers work a large per centage of that holiday and are expected to show the work they have done on return.

Okay yes they do. They decide how much snow will fall in the night. They decide that the trains will stop running that the buses cannot get along the street. They then decide that all parents cars will be frozen so hard that the doors wont open. It's teachers who decide who crashes on the way to school and who survives and with the huge salary they get ( how much do they earn - truly? Not a guess - not your neighbour - not a head of a super secondary college of ....well college of weather control apparently - but an Newly Qualified Teacher or a part time teacher) .... oh yeah that huge salary well they buy snow tracks for their jaguars and rocket boosters and zoom off to Barbados while all the parents are stuck at home around a dying candle with a bag of soggy ready salted. Teachers also decide whether to turn the thermostat up on the world and are solely responsible for Global Warming AND the current freeze.

No im not a teacher.

er...guess

I can't begin to praise teachers highly enough. I went to what was regarded locally as a 'good school' but it wasn't a good school because of the pupils; it was because of the teachers.

Boys I'd been at primary school with who were heading for a life of crime are now teachers themselves. A girl who saw no further than marriage and kids is a doctor - another an advocate.

It was probably a bit easier then. Parents were a lot more sensible about trusting teachers in respect of things like after school activities and there weren't so many competing calls on kids' free time.

The men and women who ran the Boy's Brigade and the Scouts ran the teachers a close second.

"you see what a liitle snow can do...lol...

thats the prob, and the fact we not equipped to deal with it..."

We definately aren't anymore. It used to be a case that clearing the roads was subtracted out in most areas and hauliers used to earn a bit extra money clearing the road doing so.

With all councils now it is the case they can't do so and have to priortise and manage manpower & machines against cost.
