It depends on the context. With a burger it's a bun. With bacon it's a roll. With soup it's a bread roll.

Just "A Roll".

I am not "Rollist" nor discriminate between "Granary", "Seeded", "White", "Brown" or any of the other almost endless names.

I just call them "Rolls".

And if asked to make a choice, in a restaurant for example, I'll merely point and say "That one, please".

"I used to think it was mad that Eskimo's had 5 words for snow...

Just a polite heads up as most in the UK simply aren't aware - but - the word "Eskimo" is extremely derogatory, being a quite nasty racial slur, to the indigenous peoples of the upper reaches of the Northern Hemisphere. To put it into context its actually beyond, in terms of potential offence, than using say the "N" word, especially to people in Alaska and Northern Canada. I found out the hard way off a colleague who has become a dear friend from Anchorage who quickly advised, accepting of course of my genuine ignorance, the word I (and we can include this post too) was looking for is Inuit.

Hope this might be of use someday to someone.

Charles

They are all different types of bread roll. It’s like saying meat instead of beef, lamb etc.

Cob - crusty

Batch - made in a batch and stuck together

Barm - larger roll, bap is similar

Bun - if made of brioche

It depends on the type of roll

Cob - if it’s a crusty one

Roll / breadcake - if it’s a soft one

Bun - if it’s a long soft one

Scuffler - if it’s from the oven bottom

Baguette - if it’s a long crusty one

French stock - if it’s a very long crusty one

We used to get a chip bin lid when I was at school, it was a large bread roll, filled with a chips. I only ever saw this in St. Helens in a chippy, near Taylor Park.

Yeah i realised when i wrote it...but E words having 5 names for snow is just such a recognisable meme..and putting I nuit in brackets or instead spoiled my flow..

Besides, i figured the chances of any Inuits being offended was low...
