So my daughter is in her final week of school before here exams. When did leaving school become such a massive faff and an unbelievable expense for the parents.

Firstly there’s the Prom! It’s been a constant topic of conversation for months. The expensive dress, hair, makeup. The parties the after prom parties. Not to mention a suitable vehicle to deliver them to prom. Presents for 12 Teachers, arts and crafts designed outfits for the last day, oh and a leavers hoodie!! When did that become a thing?

I know I’m going to sound like an old bastard but I remember that when I left school we wrote on each other’s shirts, got out of there as quickly as possible headed up town for a Wimpy and a can of Castlemaine XXXX. I think there might have been a disco in the school hall but I didn’t go.

I totally agree, this is just my own personal little vent on here. My daughter has everything she has asked for and deserves. She’s working incredibly hard towards her exams.

I’m just blown away by what an event it’s become. I mean seriously 'Prom!?' I thought that was only an American thing?

My teacher friend gets at least half a dozen Worlds Best Teacher mugs each end of year, a few at Christmas as well. He takes them to his rifle club for practice.

Anyhow, my daughter is quite introverted & something of an alt girl, so I’m pretty sure she won’t be arsed with attending a prom & I will be fully supporting her decision not to do so

It was a few years after I left that the prom stuff started. I wouldn't have been allowed to go anyway, Cinderella life. Now, even the little ones have graduations from nursery! 🤭 Leavers hoodies start in year 6 now 🤯 I'd have probably got one of those though.

I can't see our eldest wanting to go to prom, but I think our second will... We better start saving, they're in consecutive school years 🤣

It’s already here. My nephew had a nursery graduation. They had a flat cap and gown for the kids to have their picture taken in and everything!

We are More and more likely to adopt Americanisms. I guess the momentum now is so strong it’s impossible to reverse

Mine a leavers disco , promises made , snogs for all, half bottles of vodka stored in the bogs from days before

On the whole memorable, fun and with out the Americans

Prom is just a name. I finished high school in SA in 1985, and the Matric Dance was an established rite of passage, even then. That was just a Prom by another name. Did you not have those in the UK?

I'm more than happy for the kids to celebrate with all of these rituals. My daughter finished in 2020 - no Prom (we'd already bought the dress, too), no leavers' muck-up day, no school prizegiving, no gifts and farewells to much-loved teachers. I felt very sad for her as her school years just melted away.

We always had a winter and Summer ball at my school for all years, but it was only an event within the senior part of the school. Alcohol limited but we managed to sneak in our own. The final summer ball was renamed leavers ball for the older seniors, dinner party followed by a disco and a grope of.your crush and a snog if you were lucky.

Our place heavily subsidises tickets so pupils don't have to pay through points earned. They're very easy to get so just go for nothing. I appreciate the everything else is expensive though. Year book, hoodies. It goes on and on. Most stay on at the 6th form with the same bunch of people too 🤷‍♀️

But maybe I'm just miserable. I never went for stuff like that myself!

Slight tangent... The last company I worked for got bought out a couple of years ago, and knowing that the employees would either be made redundant or absorbed into the huge machine that was the new business, someone came up with the wonderful idea of leavers hoodies for the employees. I wear my regularly and it fills me with great memories.

But maybe cos I went to a single sex school (yes I'm that old!) we didn't have any kind of leavers disco or party - at least not one that I went to! We were all given a commemorative mug and signed each others shirts and then went home. We didn't even go back to school to pick up our results as the local authority had sold the building and land and the bulldozers went in a week after we left, ready to pave the way for a new housing estate.

I think my kids got something decent from Primark and one of the parents did the driving in a sports car owned. You have to let your kids know that you are bringing them up your way, not their way or their friends parents way, but starting that conversation at 15 isn’t gonna be easy. They will thank you for it though. I actually got called into the school once when I banned homework in my house 😂

school disco for us but was held before the exams started in july

one issue though if you left in easter there was no school disco whilst the rest could goto it.

whilst we could call the school disco a prom im glad it wasnt called that.

but that day was also a dress in what you want day and pay to do so as well.

there was no expense unless you wanted to do, same with the hair and makeup.
