So, gentlefolk of the fora, have you had your EOY review and appraisal? Is this something that your employer does, and if so, how did it go?

Do you look forward to your appraisal or is it an 'occupational formality' that you just want to get out of the way?

I've been drifting without a proper manager or direct reports for a couple of years now.

I bring it up with my old manager now and again, and managed to negotiate a significant pay rise for this year. But I haven't had an official appraisal in a long long time 💜

Just had mine, it went relatively well. Had to have an equity rise for the second year though as part of my pay rise, which indicates I was in the lower end of the pay grade

My current boss has no idea about people development or meaningful work and I'm only partially fulfilled so I'm planning my retirement 2.5 years and counting

We have ours in September/October. And only halfheartedly. I'm now at the top end of my pay scale though so will need to look elsewhere if I'm ever to get another significant salary increase

If you can negotiate a pay rise without an appraisal then that's not necessarily a bad thing!

I've been in my current role for 2.5 years and have yet to receive an appraisal. It backs up that most staff (unless you're management) mean sweet FA to the directors.

I never will have now at this place of employment anyway, as I've resigned, and heading on to a new job in the sector where my heart lies.

We sometimes have an appraisal.

This will be my 6th year at the company, and the lowest annual increase I've received was 3%. I've also received an annual bonus of around 8 - 10% every year. So no complaints here.

Currently writing mine.

Difficult to convey my biggest issue is my boss and that I frequently go over her head to get things done!

I'm also annoyed that not everyone has to do them and she's only insisting to validate herself.

We moved from annual formal appraisals to quarterly "conversations" that are supposed to be a two way thing. They're a load of crap.

I dislike my manager as she's useless so when she asks how I am I just say "fine", when I'm pissed off about something work related I will tell her only for her to do absolutely nothing about it, then she spends 90 mins going over work updates before 5 mins at the end of "would you like any development". I've asked for more project management development the last 3 times and nothing has happened. It's just a tick box exercise to say she's done it and it's utterly meaningless.

Not that I'm jaded or anything

I used to have 6 monthly appraisals. They were a complete farce and a waste of everyone's time. The last one I ever had I sat quietly and just answered questions, eventually my boss asked if I was ok because usually I had plenty to say. I told her my opinion of these tick box exercises after which nothing changed and she just shrugged.

I applied for voluntary redundancy soon after and she was shocked .

What a toxic environment that was

Yep! All done and all good. The role I have was created for me, so have been working without a proper job description so now have to define my role and person specification and create a job description…… apparently I cannot just write “I keep my head down and just crack on doing what I do”

I'm in a similar situation. A departmental merger rendered my grade as one of the highest, along with my team/colleagues, therefore leaving no room for progression or increase in salary banding.

I love it that women are stepping up and asking for what they are worth. My daughter just got a 45% pay rise. I'm so proud of her as I'm sure is obvious. I went through possible questions with her and made sure she wasn't saying I guess but to sound sure.

Davie recognised he needs to majorly refashion his own thought processes to enable them to be streamlined with the EMT.

He further recognised that he needs to pay heed to where he posts things.

They took over one of my reports and Everytime I check in with my them, they've had no stretch ops, or projects that get them to the next stage. It's really frustrating.

I used to manage multiple people - my passion is people development. I loved it - had a fantastic boss too.

It sucks when people are in roles that they are not equipped/suitable for

I thought this was going to be a humorous thread giving Lumon Industries-style performance reviews to regular forum posters. Dressing them down for using too many big words, or applying paperclips incorrectly.

I am disappointed to see that it’s not. I will be noting as much in Nero’s next performance review.

My appraisal is due soon. I don't mind it to be fair, it's mainly constructive and supportive

Though last appraisal I had I had to fill out a 'health and well being' form which asked about work life balance and I said that 2 x 3hr evening staff meetings once a month are too much on top of working 40+ hours a week. I got shot down with my manager saying 'I don't think that's unreasonable' I said 'you asked so I told you so thanks for negating my thoughts on what impacts on my health and wellbeing

That said I do have a good relationship with my boss, she is great otherwise lol

I've often wondered why employees don't appraise their employers.

I'm afraid your time-keeping is below satisfactory. I've had to work more hours than contracted most weeks, since you cut staff from the team.

Your performance needs improvement also, my pay hasn't gone up by inflation for nearly a decade.

Ok fire away Dave you were saying something about my productivity only being satisfactory this year? That's interesting, shall we explore if there are any situational factors that could be affecting worker's productivity?

Silly system. It's almost as if school is some kind of compliance conditioning system and not about education at all.

Not had an appraisal in 4 years, and only 2 in the preceding 10. Always told I'm doing a good job, high performing, blah blah blah. We just get a mandatory 1% year on year.

Mrs DS's company couldn't be more different. 8% pay rise this year plus 8K bonus. Last year was 7% pay rise and 6K bonus. 5-7% is her yearly uplift and has been for the last 10+ years. And she doesn't even have to ask or negotiate. They just give them to her. (And no, she's not in Sales.)

.

But I'm happy with my lot. It is what it is, and I'm lucky, so I don't complain, and just crack on. Complainers/troublemakers tend to get "managed out". Seen that happen many a time.

We do annual appraisals in January so I've had mind and done my team appraisals. They are useful for setting personal objectives for development as well as looking at how we can improve on our performance. It's very much focused around reflection and development in my company. Alongside that we have line management meetings..I do mine every 8 weeks with my team. It's more a chance for us to get together and have a good chat about how things are going uninterrupted and any issues and also a chance to review objectives. I see them as a positive thing and I think my team do too.

A fair few comments on here about how their company doesn’t really help with personal development. Companies don’t care. It’s your career, not theirs, and your personal development is of zero interest to a company unless it helps them.

If _you_ want to develop then _you_ need to make it happen. Don’t wait on someone else to do something they don’t care about.

Had mine. Brought up the same issues again. I don't always play well with others (mainly cos they're absolute morons).

We did get a small bonus, based on personal performance, although not a company-wide one, because we were the only entity of 6 who hit targets (we smashed them out of the park, but lost out cos Europe are shite).

Our annual increase was 1.2% which is a slap in the face as the company makes billions, hand over fist every year. My increase was £30 a month, before tax. My ground rent increased by £20 this year. So I've about £7 to cover everything else which increased this year....

Not that I'm bitter or owt. 😬

I am grateful I have a job and that my wages cover my bills.

Not everyone does want to climb the proverbial ladder, not suggesting you said that mind. Not everyone is capable to "go get em", many need a push, which isn't always useful or effective when it's communicated from a company.

But why the necessity from organisations to treat everyone like children? I have a good idea why.

Reminds me of the biannual company briefings and team briefings I used to get at a company I worked a few years ago. The presenter being whichever ceo/big wigs always saying the exact opposite of what ever any of us plebs were thinking, with surgical precision as well! It's that what made it hilarious, and these 'phrases' or soundbites used for years down the line of 99% of the workforce in similar ironic tone, especially the particularly memorable ones😂

Someone took to satirically defacing them, they ended up only putting them in places that could be surveilled.

It was perceived as a moral victory - I feel. The culprit was never identified.

"Means fuck all to me for any cunt to tell me how I can improve. I'll always continue to do what I think is right and so far I've done so with relative success career wise (without trying to sound like blowing my own trumpet)😅

Unless it's a door swings both ways, which I find really easy to spot when it isn't, I really don't take a blind bit of notice 🤷‍♂️

That just about sums up my experience of appraisals. Sitting opposite someone less qualified than me with the people skills of an angry wildebeest while she rambled on in company speak and ignored every concern and suggestion I made was so dispiriting.

I will add that I didn't mean to make it sound quite so contemptuous as I did😅 But like you say, I've very rarely heard anyone say that an appraisal has benefit them or their employer in any significance. I mean I too would also find someone using corporate bs quite abrasive to me in an individual setting

For me you weren't quite contemptuous enough!

We used to be given little 'motivational' slogans.

We used to listen to them then go back to our desks and laugh. It's been nearly ten years and ex colleagues and I still use them ironically.

Did they have the slogans on plaques in the elevator?

That never happened while I was there I think it would have finished me off even sooner

Someone took to satirically defacing them, they ended up only putting them in places that could be surveilled.

It was perceived as a moral victory - I feel. The culprit was never identified."

Do they ever work? Has anyone been motivated by them?

I think some people are motivated to advance their position and if regurgitating doctrine achieves that they'll repeat it like a mantra.

I'm not sure it achieves anything in terms of productivity - I have seen little evidence of that. I don't know I walked away and went self-employed a decade ago - for my own sanity.

In the west.

Luckily I don’t have to endure this farce anymore.

I didn’t pay any attention to what was said during any of my 1 to 1s and I’m sure my manager didn’t pay attention to what I said either.

Wherever the wind takes me

Strewth so much hate

Most employers are aware that Supervisions and Appraisals are disliked. Most employers probably dislike holding them too.

But for a lot of jobs (especially healthcare, social care) they are considered essential and often expected by regulatory bodies and employers then get shit if they’re not done.

I personally think they are a waste of time, if you have an open door policy with staff and you’re a decent employer, then they should be able to approach you as and when they need to, in a more relaxing and less box ticking exercise kind of way about anything and everything. But I say that from a small business point of view. The bigger the Company the more you’re “just a number” and I say that from past experience.

But we have a regulatory body who insists things are done a certain way, so what do I know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just a bit disappointing to see so much hate.

Wirral

My company takes them very seriously, but my boss sees them as a box ticking exercise, so in my current role it's not a helpful process.

I contracted for years so tend to do a self-appraisal of what I've achieved over the year and what I want to achieve in the year ahead - if I'm aiming at a particular industry, company or role, what do I need to do to best position myself and shore up any weak spots in my CV.

At my current company, in my current role, the experience has been very positive.

I’ve benefited hugely from the end of year discussion.

I’m in a position of authority in a regulator, my review is not done by HR but by my Head of department.

If only all appraisals had been like this.

Doesn't that suggest that for some of us at least the process isn't working?

I worked in a heavily regulated career with government set targets and regular inspections.

Appraisals were nothing more than middle management ticking boxes to show those above them that the above targets were on the way to being met even if they weren't and having the correct paperwork in place when inspections happened.

Disappointing is a word I'd apply to the whole process and a word often applied to my attitude towards appraisals by my boss.

A good manager shouldn't wait until once a year to do this stuff. You get to know your team and appraisals become a formality

Of course worked enough places where it's normal to do neither

A den in the Glen

In my line of work the end of year appraisal is just an exercise of blowing smoke up your arse. The mid year appraisal is more gritty, truthful and focuses on your negatives giving it to you full on in order to improve to get the smoke blown up your arse. 😂

Dubai & Nottingham

Last company I was at it was a bit of a joke as bonus could be 100% of full year salary if targets met so very high stakes & everyone just collects evidence of how they’ve smashed targets. Then I used to get complaints if I didn’t give 100% and told every other manager does and I’m taking money off their families by not doing the same , even threatened. I don’t miss appraisals….

I’d say for most they don’t work, hence my preference for “open door policy” preference for dealing with staff, but realise that is probably an old fashioned approach these days, but luckily working for a smaller Company allows us to have that to a degree, as long as we comply with Regulations.

Larger Companies I found it was always a case of whether your face fit and if you didn’t adhere to their (often unreasonable) expectations then your face definitely did not fit and you could guarantee you’d be top of the list for unexpected redundancy.

I am wholly biased now though because I work for a small Company and we are pretty awesome to work for, but then I would say that. Our staff might not!

It’s just disappointing to see so many bad experiences. Lack of job satisfaction. We spend so much time in work we should at least be able to enjoy it a little bit!

Camberley occasionally doncaster

"A fair few comments on here about how their company doesn’t really help with personal development. Companies don’t care. It’s your career, not theirs, and your personal development is of zero interest to a company unless it helps them.

If _you_ want to develop then _you_ need to make it happen. Don’t wait on someone else to do something they don’t care about."

As a manager I take staff development seriously. I still expect people to identify what and how they want to develop. It's my job to help facilitate that.

Want to move to a different unit to work on something else? I will ring their boss up to get you a visit to see if you like it enough to move.

Want to pursue further education/professional registration? I will see if I can secure funding and wangle flexible working arrangements.

Want to go for promotion? I will arrange practice interviews for you.

I find it quite distressing that many managers can't even work out these fundamentals.
