"So, gentlefolk of the fora, have you had your EOY review and appraisal? Is this something that your employer does, and if so, how did it go? Do you look forward to your appraisal or is it an 'occupational formality' that you just want to get out of the way?" Yep! All done and all good. The role I have was created for me, so have been working without a proper job description so now have to define my role and person specification and create a job description…… apparently I cannot just write “I keep my head down and just crack on doing what I do” ![]()

"We have ours in September/October. And only halfheartedly. I'm now at the top end of my pay scale though so will need to look elsewhere if I'm ever to get another significant salary increase ![]() · I'm in a similar situation. A departmental merger rendered my grade as one of the highest, along with my team/colleagues, therefore leaving no room for progression or increase in salary banding.

"One place I worked, end of year appraisals were in late November. We had to do self appraisal first, covering different aspects of the job. Not everyone is capable to "go get em", many need a push, which isn't always useful or effective when it's communicated from a company. But why the necessity from organisations to treat everyone like children? I have a good idea why.

The presenter being whichever ceo/big wigs always saying the exact opposite of what ever any of us plebs were thinking, with surgical precision as well! It's that what made it hilarious, and these 'phrases' or soundbites used for years down the line of 99% of the workforce in similar ironic tone, especially the particularly memorable ones😂

"Strewth so much hate ![]() Doesn't that suggest that for some of us at least the process isn't working? I worked in a heavily regulated career with government set targets and regular inspections. Appraisals were nothing more than middle management ticking boxes to show those above them that the above targets were on the way to being met even if they weren't and having the correct paperwork in place when inspections happened. Disappointing is a word I'd apply to the whole process and a word often applied to my attitude towards appraisals by my boss.

"Strewth so much hate ![]() I’d say for most they don’t work, hence my preference for “open door policy” preference for dealing with staff, but realise that is probably an old fashioned approach these days, but luckily working for a smaller Company allows us to have that to a degree, as long as we comply with Regulations. Larger Companies I found it was always a case of whether your face fit and if you didn’t adhere to their (often unreasonable) expectations then your face definitely did not fit and you could guarantee you’d be top of the list for unexpected redundancy. I am wholly biased now though because I work for a small Company and we are pretty awesome to work for, but then I would say that. Our staff might not! ![]()

It's my job to help facilitate that. Want to move to a different unit to work on something else? I will ring their boss up to get you a visit to see if you like it enough to move. Want to pursue further education/professional registration? I will see if I can secure funding and wangle flexible working arrangements. Want to go for promotion? I will arrange practice interviews for you. I find it quite distressing that many managers can't even work out these fundamentals.
