Because they were bombarded with images of celebs doing it for years, people followed like sheep and it became one of the most normalised ways of posing for a photo. It was also a way for people to pose that were self conscious about their smiles for whatever reason.

Celebs apparently started it due to a combinated of appearing slightly sultry (makes lips look fuller) and it causing less wrinkles than a smile…
