Not by me, personally he's an amazing guitarist. (Self taught musician too) When he plays the guitar solo for " while my guitar gently weeps" with a whole heap of guitarists and throws the guitar off at the end....🤣 My job here is done AV that! Awesome!

I struggle with defining "underrated". Apart from a half dozen globally recognised megastars, you could argue the case for almost anyone to at least be "underappreciated" due to being not widely known.

Good shout by the OP for Aynsley Lister... But if he was more widely known you wouldn't get to see him at the 100 club for £20.

A few more that I think deserve wider recognition, Chris Buck (cardinal black), Oli Brown, Marcus Bonfanti, Davey Knowles.

Jeff Buckley - of course being blessed with one of the most stunning voices ever to be recorded was a huge smoke screen causing his stellar guitar playing to be overlooked.

Same as Prince, so another shout out for him, with his abilities as a multi-musician, producer, engineer, dancer and choreographer having the same effect.

Not so much underrated, those that are aware of him are fully appreciative of his talent, but often overlooked in the shadows of Peter Green, I put forward Danny Kerwan , I personally would rate him as Greens equal.

I really like the bad/couldn't-care-less players like Johnny Thunders, and I love the way Marc Bolan used to try to play well outside of his actual ability which was basic at best! - some of his live stuff he doesn't even play a solo in the same key as the song - it's so wrong it's right.

Jake's guitar had cost him £500, second-hand - but the previous owner was Segovia. How do I know this? Because he told me, while I was strumming a couple of chords on it, c. 1978. True story.

"Prince!

Was just talking about this with my mate a couple of weeks ago. So underrated

Not by me, personally he's an amazing guitarist. (Self taught musician too) When he plays the guitar solo for " while my guitar gently weeps" with a whole heap of guitarists and throws the guitar off at the end....🤣 My job here is done AV that! Awesome!"

and it looks like it disappears into the air

I'll throw in Tash Sultana. Could watch them all day.

Try playing anything by the Manics and you realise... Great rhythm and lead.

On That Pedal Show this week and worth a watch!

"Joe pass"

Huh? Generally acknowledged as one of the jazz greats, hardly underrated.

For the uninitiated, find an album called 'Take Love Easy' - Joe's guitar, Ella's voice, nothing else needed...

It’s a great watch. I say that as someone who isn’t even a particular fan of the band (even though I see them around the place regularly and they come across are lovely dudes).

One other who hasn’t had a mention is John Renbourn.

At the risk of being hunted down and whacked on the head with a Telecaster, is there anyone else in the “Prince was amazing, that WMGGW solo is great showmanship, but it’s not THAT amazing” camp

"John Martyn"

Excellent choice. Ask any “good” guitarist to play one of his songs. They will probably back out. They are far more difficult than they sound. Saw him live 5 times.

"Rory Gallagher"

"Prince definitely... But also Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics. An under-the-radar genius. "

Dave Stewart surprises me. Thought he could only play rhythm. Once saw a video on live TV with him and an all star collection on stage. He was playing 3 chord rhythm, another musician called him to play a solo. His face filled with panic and he played the same 3 chords louder. It was cringy to watch. He’s a great songwriter and producer. I suspect his recordings use hired guns to play parts he writes. Happy to be proven wrong.

Have a look at the Eurythmics Revenge Tour concert in Sidney in 1987. It’s on YouTube. Dave Stewart can play!

"Eric Clapton 👌🏻

Underrated?"

He underrated himself though!

Theres a Clapton quote like the Hendrix one above too. He was asked how was it being rated worlds best guitarist and said I dunno ask Prince.

If you ever watch the tribute to George Harrison when Prince and Tom Petty are on stage and Prince just kills it.

Another infamous Clapton quip he's often used in interviews over the years to side step the "who's the best guitarist?" question is he'd deadpan...

"Well its a close one between that kid in his garage somewhere in Idaho and that other lad in his bedroom at his mam's house in Preston in Lancashire"

"Um... but no one's ever heard those"

"Exactly!" winked Eric

PS - Prince jamming While My Guitar Gently Weeps is indeed superb!
