When someone says “back in the day”?

This term seems to come up so often these days by those of a certain age.

For me it's something I say regarding Nostalgia from my youth or from 20 odd years ago (cos I'm an OAP now) 👵🏼

Sometimes I struggle to remember what I did yesterday so back in the day could very well be yesterday.

"When someone says “back in the day”?

I suspect you hear it more often these days as your peer group (much like mine) has reached the age where it becomes an appropriate thing to say in an increasing larger range of circumstances.

It's an expression that is only relevent to life experiences that have changed significantly. No one says "back in the day we had to flush the toilet to get rid of pooh" because we all still do it. However, "back in the day, if you wanted to watch a film that wasn't on telly you had to hire or buy a video" makes perfect sense.

I think any age person can use it once they've experienced (or are aware of) a change in how things are done or how social attitudes have changed. For example, a 10 year old could come home from school and say "back in the day children had to work in the mines" As we get older, we have more and more of these as personal experiences to comment on, making the expression more and more likely to be used.

Finedon ,

For me back in the day refers to my antics in the swinging 60s and 70s.

Feel sorry for youth of today no affordable housing so much stress
