Do you drive or own a car?

Do you cycle to work or walk the kids to school?

Do you use public transport?

Do you go food shopping or have it delivered?

Is a car a necessity for all?

If you lived in a place you could walk the kids to school or had good affordable transport links would you get rid of your car as they are expensive to run and maintain and maybe hire one for anything you needed one for like a holiday or weekend away?

Sometimes - train mostly

I drive if its a big shop (cat food), but walk if its a few items i can carry

I mean it depends? I'd say my mum+dad don't need one - they take the bus /train mostly - but it gives them independence

When I retire i would potentially consider getting rid of it... A car share would be ideal for me

A mixture of the options you mention.

I walk a lot, use public transport for certain journeys, and drive the rest of the time.

Shopping? I usually walk.

out here in the wilds of Cumbria no buses no trains and if you live in the wrong part of the lake district not much chance of getting an ambulance, thank goodness we do have the air ambulance it has saved so many lives. I could never see a time when I would get rid of my car unless I retired to the city

I'm in London so decent regular public transport across the capital. Can be a bit mad on tbe night bus/24 hour routes at times. I also have a pretty bicycle that's collecting spiderweb for me on my balcony too.

I've never had the option of using public transport.

I can walk to the shop but my previous jobs involved visiting customers all over the country so a car was the only option.

Currently it's an hour's commute each way to work by car. If I was to use public transport that journey would take 3 hours each way and involve 3 different buses.

We don't have a proper rail network here so that isn't part of any discussion either.

We own a car.

We have our shopping delivered

Walk anywhere that's within sensible range.

Use public transport when sensible.

If public transport was reliable and efficient we'd still own a car because we need to be able to get to my dad's quickly.

In the last five years public transport in this area has become increasingly unreliable. To the extent that if you have an appointment you need to factor in an extra hour and getting to the nearest hospital takes over an hour and at least two buses...it's approximately 6 miles away.

I drive, I don’t cycle, I have used public transport twice in the last 40 years, once was a train journey once was a return bus journey, I don’t have my groceries delivered and I don’t know if everyone requires a car, you’d have to ask them.

I drive and have several cars, each bought with a specific purpose.

A mini for when I'm in the City, 4 seater cabrio for summer and longer journeys, an estate for shopping, holidays and moving bulky items and a 50 year old 2 seater as a hobby car and to preserve it and its heritage. I also have a touring motorbike and a cruiser for summer.

Some might say that is excessive but all bought and paid for.

Public transport where I really live is 4 buses a day into the nearest town. I couldn't commute to work on public transport.

Whatever shopping I need I grab on the commute as delivery is limited out in the sticks.

I wouldn't hire a car as I would still need to travel to pick the thing up.

When China, India et al stop burning fossil fuels, I'd consider going electric. Without buying in to conspiracies, owning a vehicle is freedom to go where I want, when I want.

I own two cars:

A hybrid large car and a smaller petrol car, which I'm keeping good for my son to be able to use when he passes his test.

I do sometimes walk the kids to school(s)

I will use the train if I'm going into London.

I do my own food shopping.

My car won't be going anywhere as I need to be able to get to family members urgently if required due to their poor health. And I like going on adventures without using public transport.

When I'm old I will probably get rid, maybe around 70 🤣🤣

i lived and worked in amsterdam for a few years ... i had a cargo bike for travelling to work with my tools ... used trams or walked everywhere ..... it's very flat though which helps

I live by the metro & occasionally when I work it’s from home so no need for a car here. For the last 2 years I’ve managed OK with trains & Uber and occasional hire car when spending time in the UK.

I like a simple & active life & not owning cars really helps with that.

I drive and to be honest as I live 35-40 miles away from work, it’s cheaper than the train. I would prefer the train to be honest but after working out the costs, car is cheaper.

My car also makes it easier to visit my mum who has Alzheimer’s. I live in Cheshire and she is in Bolton, 45 minutes in the car.

Train to Manchester 1 hour - then train to Bolton 35 minutes, walk to the care home 30 minutes. Over 2 hours to visit for an hour then another 2 hours to get back, not including the time to walk to and from my local train station.

No matter how good public transportation ever gets, it’ll always be down to convenience and time over cheaper alternatives (not that they are cheap currently).

I drive myself most places because public transport and wheelchairs are a crappy mix. I do take buses and trains sometimes but it's stressful and you never know if you'll actually be able to board or get off at the other end. For public transport use, I am reliant on others, I can't be independent.

Mr KC does not drive so he uses buses and trains for work and if he's doing the school run. He uses taxis in the evening for after school because otherwise it's 2 buses and they get home far too late.

Food shopping we usually go together at the weekend and do it with the car bit do sometimes use home delivery. He's using home delivery while I'm in hospital.

A car is a necessity for me.

I have a van for work, when I split up with ex in 2021 she took our car abs I never bothered to replace it I just go everywhere in my van, I did hire a car though to take my kids away on holiday back in august

Only my daughter is still in school and she walks herself my house backs onto the school it’s the reason I bought the place ten years ago for the kids going to school

We have a few cars between us and both currently motorbike shopping too...

For us a car is more than just a means of getting from a to b.. we both enjoy driving, including track days etc.

In fact our main holiday every year is so that we can fully use the car on the mountain roads on the IOM.

When we go away on holiday it depends where we go... London.. we park outside London and use the tube..Italy we always use the metro and when in other counties we tend to also use public transport...

I wouldn't be without my car...i am sulky enough that I have to drive a dull and quite slow and boring car daily

No I don’t use public transport, it’s atrocious around here. An example would be 2 hours to travel 12 miles across the city, using 2-3 buses.

I pass a shop on the way home for my food.

Work is 80 mile round trip. I walk to the school on days I don’t work from home if I have to be back for work I’ll drive.

Never use public transport

I go and do the food shop

I need my car. I’m not sure what I’d do without one tbh. They’re not that expensive to run if you don’t have a fancy brand new one
