Bacon Butty Sauce...

Barrow-in-Furness

Random question, what sauce do people prefer on their bacon butty??

Being a true northerner i always have brown sauce, a friend of mine (who is from down south) prefers red / tomatoe sauce and my boss has mayo (he's from Wales), so just wanting to throw it open to the wider audience...

In my opinion, if you eat non-smoked, do you even like bacon?

Also, brown sauce (HP or Daddies) and in a well fired roll with Lurpack.

Tomato sauce is my favourite but any of the above is nice as long as it’s not drenched in sauce, like they use to do with the snack sandwiches you can get a the supermarket while on the go

Whatever sauce I fancy at the time. Typically brown, BBQ or ketchup.

Four rashers of thick bacon, couple slices of mature cheddar and BBQ sauce makes a banging sarnie.

I am from the North the true North and it's 'Red' none of this fancy tomato 'well la de dah' ketchup nonsense.

And it's supposed to have egg and black pudding on it.

You squash the black pudding so it covers the bread propper and then the egg yolk should be runny so it dribble onto your vest.

That's how it's done.

It depends on the bacon.

If it's back bacon a dash of green chilli sauce and mustard served in well buttered bread slices. The bacon should be cooked but not crispy - the sauces go in the "well" created by the eye of the bacon as it curls up during cooking.

If it's streaky bacon then brown (NOT fruity) sauce preferably with a fried egg (runny yolk). The bacon should be crispy.

Middle bacon doesn't belong in a sandwich - can you even still buy middle bacon?

To answer a previous question if it isn't smoked it isn't bacon.

Ketchup comes from the Hokkien Chinese word, kê-tsiap, the name of a sauce derived from fermented fish. It is believed that traders brought fish sauce from Vietnam to southeastern China.

Brown sauce is sauce that is brown.

"

Why doesn't brown sauce have a proper name? Red sauce is Ketchup so what's brown sauce?"

Because brown sauce was always branded. Well, that was until supermarkets created their own-brand generic versions.

The first brown sauce was A.1. Sauce which was widely imitated in the 19th century. A grocer - Frederick Gibson Garton - created an imitation he later named "H.P. Sauce" due to a rumour it was served in the Houses of Parliament. He also created "Daddies Favourite Sauce" (both brands are now owned by Heinz).

As a side note ketchup was originally brown as it was made from mushrooms. "Tomato" ketchup came along later as a separate flavour but "ketchup" is now recognised as the red tomatoey kind as it became the most popular flavour.
