Time and cost. I also live in a rural setting, so have to drive to get to a gym, which just makes it that much more of a nuisance. I find it easier to work out at home, and run/cycle locally

I’ve never liked the idea.

Prefer to play sport, circuit train and just eat a fairly sensible diet.

That’s not to say I have anything against anyone that does go. I have a lot of respect for all you gym fit people, it requires dedication and discipline to get that type of physique

Just not for me. I’ve always done outside sport like running and cycling and, as a slim build guy, they work best for me.

If I do have to join a place because of injury, I’ll swim.

I tried it ages ago and found it incredibly boring. Wasn't stimulating at all, which is a requirement for anything I do lol.

Prefer a nice long walk somewhere in the woods, out in the middle of nowhere. Bag with snacks and drinks, trekking along new paths, sometimes getting lost or ending up on the moors with my mate and her dogs.

Good exercise and plus, dogs! Loads of fun, chasing after those furry buggers. 😄

I've never really enjoyed exercise for its own purpose.

If I want to walk, I go for a walk not a treadmill.

If I want to ride a bike I get on my bike.

If I want to play a sport I play the sport.

There's usually jobs that need doing that can give me a bit of a workout.

I don't see the point of gyms, unless one is a professional athlete of some kind or perhaps rehabilitation after an injury.

Not a good idea at my age. I'm fit and slim and stay so with lots of walking, exercise and a healthy diet.

I don't need the expense of a gym for that.

Nothing against gyms or people who go but for me (A) it's just boring.

Why would I cycle in a room going nowhere when I could cycle to a different town?

Why would I row on the spot when I can row a boat across a lake?

I much prefer actually moving my body rather than exercises that involve staying in one place.

For me I'd get bored and frustrated very quickly.

Not to mention there seems to be a culture of muppetness in some, not all gyms, that I'd like to distance myself from as far as reasonably practical

Prefer to be doing something that takes my mind off how hard it is.

Do cycling, boot camp and play squash - all things that you mean you’re not thinking about the pain or reps…

I live and work in two different cuties, meaning I'm often travelling between the two. When I'm home, I'm a full-time active dad, so don't get any free time until 9-10pm. I do gym occasionally, but it's a sporadic, disorganised affair.

I used to belong to a corporate gym.

Then I got sick and my immune system took a hammering and I was told to avoid crowded places for a while. So I cancelled my subscription. Gyms can be a hotbed for germs.

I migrated towards the outdoor gyms you see popping up. This suited me perfectly as most of my routine consisted of calisthenics (body weight training). So lots of pull-ups, dips, chin-ups etc. The outdoor gyms near me cater for this kind of workout well. So at the moment my routine is a daily 5 mile walk and en-route I will knock out some dips and pull-ups.

I am away for a holiday next week and on my return I plan to start running again whilst still carrying on with the resistance work mentioned above .

However I have to say I don’t do cold well and since I have been feeling a lot better recently I may start up my gym membership again for the winter months and take it inside.

I’ve not been for about two weeks because I’m doing manual work at the moment on my property.

As much as I love the gym, the only reason I go is because I generally live such a lifestyle where I am my body gets minimal physical work. I would much rather stay healthy fit and strong without the need for a gym

I have never set foot inside one, I think its down to feeling insecure, thinking everyone is looking at you.

Lately have bought rower, tread and bike plus multi gym and lost 4 stone so at 61 probably dont think I ever will set foot in one now.

I like classes like zumba, body pump, LBT, yoga. Also swimming and running outdoors.

Those things i can do as and when money /time permits.

Always on the move

I was going pretty regular but due to some work stuff, motivation falling off a cliff, and the a minor Op, I haven't been forabout 6 weeks. As soon as I'm healed up though, I intend to give myself a kick up the arse and get back.

Actually building up to going drains me, but I enjoy it once I'm there

I never gymmed because I had insanely high metabolism, didnt put on weight and thought I was invincible. Now the middle-aged spread and "crunchy" knees are creeping in, and I regret younger me's choices.

To be fair, I still don't gym but I try to look after myself a bit better

I ask myself this question all the time.

I pay my weekly sbs, but struggle with the motivation to go.

I need a gym buddy.

At the moment I am working really hard on my swim technique and speed and going 3 times a week.

I do need to get back in to the gym though - I always enjoy it when I do actually go.

I find gyms boring. Rather get my exercise outside in nature. Walking.

I did used to attend the gym regularly though, many many, many moons ago. One of the highlights was watching someone on the treadmill in front of me fall and slide off. They got up and got back on

Honestly? I can't be arsed.

It's not like I don't have the time. I just don't want to.

I bought a rowing machine to use at home instead.

Had it a month and it's been used two more times than I've been to the gym in the last twenty years......🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂😂

The vending machine (fridge, obvs) at home is better than the ones at gyms too, as it contains cake, tiramisu and cherry cider. 🤷‍♂️

Since last July 2023 I’m out the door for work at 6:15 am, home at 7pm, it’s simply a time issue for me.

I do walk almost 5 1/2 miles a day as part of my commute on a daily basis so that keeps me fit, I have noticed the decrease in muscle of course, and a lot of strength has disappeared also.
