"Can you swim?

Do you swim often?"

Yes and yes.

I had surgery last year resulting in nerve damage around the shoulder.

Swimming has meant I'm almost back to normal.

We are very lucky that locally we have several pools and the beach close by.

My favourite swimming is sea swimming especially around rocky coves.

Yes. When I was growing up it was considered an essential life skill to be able to save yourself from drowning at a beach.

I've not swum in a long time, but I'm still pretty confident that I could save myself in a pinch.

I didn't used to be able to; I had pretty intense hydrophobia born of nearly drowning when I was younger.

Years later, I had a hotel getaway with my wife where she took me to the pool and supported me through getting in the water and holding me until I no longer feared sinking if she let go. Now I absolutely love it! I still hate getting my face completely submerged, but I have no issues with swimming itself.

Yes, all part of triathlon training. We pool swim throughout the winter and open water swim throughout the Tri season. We're fortunate we live beside the beach but also use Princes Dock in Liverpool next to the Liver building and a fantastic quarry in Eccleston with crystal clear water and huge carp. You cannot underestimate how good swimming is for overall fitness

I can swim "ok", but I rarely go swimming. I would love to be able to do a triathlon, but my swimming just wouldn't be good enough. Maybe one day I will get some coaching.

I grew up in an era when swimming was a regular part of the curriculum. Pretty much my entire youth was spent swimming. I kinda stopped swimming specifically probably in my 20s, but carried on surfing, sailing and scuba diving, all of which involve swimming to a degree. About 5 years ago I took up triathlon, which took me back to open water swimming after many years.

Having been a surfer in my youth, I'm amazed at the amount of people who have only ever swum in a pool, then line up at an ironman with a sea swim. I literally stood next to a guy at Barcelona last year who told me this was his first time swimming in the sea!...I kinda slid to one side away from him

I used to do marathon swims a couple of times a year, but haven't got back into it since the pandemic.

Endurance swimming is the only sport I've ever been any good at and I think that's only the case because fat floats on water!

Working from home I rarely swim any more and I miss the early morning meditation of getting a quick mile in before work.
