Mmmmm... tooooassstttt.... (full Homer Simpson mode activated)

I used to eat so much toast, normally with a shed load of butter, or Lurpak (usually the Aldi version), sometimes with Marmite (well, supermarket Yeast Extract, as I prefer it) or sometimes with jam or Nutella.

These days, if I have any bread in the house, it's a smallish slice, more than likely without butter or spread, but peanut butter, banana and, if I have any, fresh raspberries.

I used to think I loved the taste of bread/toast and butter, but actually, I've realised it was a conditioned opinion. It's nice, don't get me wrong, but not the be-all and end-all I used to imagine.

But in my head I do sometimes miss it

Some toast is awful. If it's made with sliced white bread it's like cardboard. The sourdough stuff you pay £290 a slice for at airports is shockingly bad.

My absolute favourite is thickly sliced fresh white bread toasted over an open fire using a toasting fork then spread with Lurpak. Delicious!

Good bread for a start and properly toasted ( not lukewarm bread that most try to serve you these days) Then a little good quality butter and orange marmalade or honey if sweet. Otherwise just on its own with butter or cheese or scrambled egg. If you do two slices put one down then your crispy bacon on top and a couple of grilled toms and then your other slice of toast on top, you can have an alternative to a bacon sandwich

Malted and seeded or sour dough slice with lots of salted butter, smashed avacado with a few chilli flakes and soft poached egg. Accompanied by a real brewed coffee (for me a dark roast Kenyan blend).

It's good for you it's Country Life and you can't get a better bit of butter on the knife. If you haven't any in have a word with the wife but spread it on your toast in the morning.
