While out with friends today, one has asked us to call her by her middle name as she hates her given first name, which in my opinion is a lovely name. So my question is would you ever change your name and what would you like to be called?

I like my name and would never change it

Hmm. I don't think I would. I'm not exactly married to my name, but after 39 years with it I can't imagine myself being called anything else.

A number of family members use their middle names. I'm not sure my daughter knows my bro's actual first name at all. I hate my middle name.

I'm fine with my first name. It's unusual but it suits me. So no, I wouldn't change my name.

A friend of mine changed hers by deed poll to add a middle name of her choice because she felt left out at not having one from birth.

I quite like my name. I never really used to as it wasn't a traditional Punjabi name that had a meaning which my siblings had, but as it can be shortened, I've grown to like it

I wouldn't change mine. It's pretty generic, but I don't dislike it.

I can see why you would though if you were called something like [insert name I don't like, but will redact so as not to offend anyone].

No I love my name. But I also love my middle name. When I was little I tried to make everyone call me my middle name. It didn’t catch on 🤣

I don't have a middle name. I gave two of my kids a more pedestrian middle name in n. Are they didn't like theirs as they got older, but their middle names are also significant for family reasons.

I have gone by a shortened version of my name for 27 years. I only introduce myself as my given name to those that speak Spanish, otherwise I’ve been Bella more than half my life.

I don’t have a middle name and always wished I did.

I wouldn’t change my name mostly because I’m the only one in my family without a biblical name, and no middle name. I like my uniqueness.

I had a big fight with my ex about my surname. He came around, because mine is common and easy to spell, and his isn't. We booked everywhere under my name 😝

I was the only one in a large sibling group not given a middle name which always bothered me despite my parents saying it was because my first name was enough on its own. I quite like my name and am happy for it to be shortened too.

My siblings used to say I was adopted and it was evident because I didn’t have a middle name like the rest of them.

I started a thread about my names a couple of years back. I don’t dislike either of them but they are constantly being misspelled and it’s really frickin irritating.

Every time I give my names to someone I have to spell them. I would love a given and family name that can’t be misspelled and lend themselves to affectionate nicknames.

But I wonder if I’d answer to the new ones. That said, my ears do prick up every time I hear Felix.

East of Eden, West of Hell

I changed my surname when I got married (as you do), then changed it back when I got divorced.

When I changed back to my maiden name, I (with the permission of my Mum) added in her maiden name as a second middle name, as it's already died out in our line. (Two daughters, both of whom got married)

Now I have 4 names I have to spell! My first name and given middle name aren't unusual, but they can have different spellings.

Sometimes I'd like a different name, but I have no idea what I'd choose, or what would suit me, other than the name I've had for 44 years.

Although when I was at Uni, sometimes I'd proffer the name Lauren to those asked.

I actually used to tell people in front of my parents that they didnt love me enough to give me a middle name. And managed to convince my nursery school i had one and get it added to the register

I changed my first and middle name by deed poll on a whim. I didn't hate my name was just indifferent. I didn't consider it much of a big deal really.

I'm 50 and changed my surname by deed poll fairly recently. I've never married (and never will) but my birth name was a hindrance and reminder of shitty times.
