"After the opening ceremony, I am not surprised, but deeply saddened for female athletes. If there is a need to give transgender athletes a space to compete in sports, maybe they should think about having Transgender Olympics. As Martina Navratilova said, rightly so, women’s sport is not a place for failed male athletes. The end." This. K

It is illegal to be trans in Algeria so they're unlikely to put such an athletes forward. She has internal testes rather than ovaries, no external male genitals but XY chromosomes. It's a disorder of sexual development (previously referred to as intersex).

"Most of the comments above jumping to conclusions again by following Facebook or social media. Even after someone has given the facts there’s still the anti trans comments. It’s this kind of instant judgement that makes the whole world a worse place than it needs to be. The other fighter withdrew because she was injured not because the woman was a man. The other fighter was born a woman with high testosterone levels. " I read her interview, she said quote.. It could be the match of my life but, in that moment, I had to safeguard my life, too. I felt to do this, I didn't have any fear, I don't have any fear of the ring or to get hit. I fought very often in the national team. I train with my brother. I've always fought against men, but I felt too much pain today.I'm used to suffering. I've never taken a punch like that, it's impossible to continue. I'm nobody to say it's illegal. She fell to her knees crying this is unjust in the ring.

Personally after seeing the 'bout' I looked online and used the Guardian (that well known intolerant outlet) and wiki . My issue is about safety as those born with xy chromosomes as women will have higher levels of testosterone and muscle mass which another woman born with xx chromosomes and that gives an unfair advantage plus the possibility of more harm to the latter.. And yes I know, a woman boxer is more than capable of doing harm too to some of us blokes.. She's not trans, this isn't from myself a criticism upon those who are trans and I'm on here saying that..

Khelif does however have XY chromosomes and thus was withdrawn from the last world championships for not meeting the gender eligibility criteria. The IOC have confirmed that the two athletes, Khelif and Yu-ting, have met their eligibility criteria but won’t say what that is other than by confirming that their passports define them as women. Blimey, a view point that’s actually very articulate and very much spot on ![]() It's not about trans, gender or anything related to that. She's a woman with a very rare medical condition. This condition means she has XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone. It's this, the elevated testosterone that means she should not be allowed to compete. If another woman wanted to raise her testosterone, to gain similar advantages from doing this, she would have to dope herself. If this was found out then she would be banned. Unfortunately this boxer has a very rare condition but because it raises testosterone that's why she shouldn't be allowed to compete, not because she's a trans woman because she isn't but because she has the equivalent of PEDs running through her body with all the advantages that brings. It may seem unfair but it's not enough to be the correct sex in order to compete. There are a variety of factors you must satisfy in order to compete. Things like age and weight must be within certain parameters. There are also a plethora of medical conditions which prohibit competition and unfortunately this is were she should be classed as ineligible, and this alone. Mrs x

The other fighter was born a woman with high testosterone levels. "Crazy times. Yeah trans should have their own olympics. I'm pleased you agree or take part in mixed events like tennis. If someone brings home he gold I don't care if someone was born man or not. But sport should always be a level playing field. There's no such thing as a level playing field in professional sports. Michael Phelps had the longest arms an Olympic swimmer has ever had, basketball players can be over 7ft tall...should they be banned so that it's a "level playing field" too? This manufactured controversy only ever comes up when a woman of colour who is a superior athlete beats a white woman. Caster Semenya all over again. The thing is, Imane Khelif has lost 9 of her professional bouts. The way people infantilize the women she beats you'd think she was smacking up a primary school kid. She's against PROFESSIONAL athletes who are at the top of their sport, not some dainty little fairy who can't defend herself. These female athletes would knock out most average people in one punch. Comparing height with gender is a bit of stretch. Usyk beat Tyson, but would you support a biological female who transitioned to male being allowed to fight one of them? That would be awful to witness. You miss the point. The point is all high level athletes are some kind of genetic outlier, no matter what their sex chromosomes are. They're the super tall or the super muscly or the super quick or the best hand/coordination or whatever. Most of us could never perform any sports at that level. The athletes we see on telly all have genetic differences/mutations that gift them abilities in their sports that few people have. " But they don't have levels of a performance enhancing compound, testosterone, beyond that which is allowed. That's why there's drug tests, Ben Johnson, Seoul 1988 springs to mind. Unfortunately this boxer has illegal levels of testosterone and as such should not be able to compete. Mrs x

Being good at sport is largely about being genetically advantaged, Michael Phelps had the longest arm span of any Olympic swimming champion ever and is the greatest swimmer of all time. Should he have been banned for having an advantage?" No I'm not saying physical advantages should be banned. Some sports require certain sized but there are still anomalies within this, but no I wouldn't ban physical attributes. However there are limits set regarding things. One of which is the levels of hormones you can have within your system, in this case testosterone. These levels supply great performance capabilities and there collective called PEDs. So athletes cannot give themselves PEDs, it's not allowed. If you are caught you will face a ban. Famous case are Ben Johnson in Seoul and Lance Armstrong the cyclist. Unfortunately this woman, because of a very rare medical condition has elevated levels of testosterone. This means that over the years she has developed an advantage in power, a significant advantage in power akin to those of a man. This is the reason she should be banned and not compete against other woman. She has the capability to deliver a devastating blow that could be life threatening for her opponents. It's not her fault, I'm not saying she's cheating and I do feel sorry for her. However she has a medical condition that should prohibit her from competing, just like thousands of others who have other medical conditions and cannot compete. Now you may not agree with me and in that case can I ask you a question? In regards to her having elevated testosterone in her system and you think she should be allowed to compete, does that .can you think Lance Armstrong should have his ban from cycling removed and have all his Tour de France victories restored? Mrs x" I don't think the comparison bears up, one cheated knowing what he illegally put in his body was designed to give him an unfair advantage and khelif just happens to have been born differently. I do think it's an issue that the relevant bodies need to sort out, and set common rules and criteria which isn't the case in her sport.. It's like saying ban some of the great runners born in high altitude countries, Ethiopia and Kenya etc as they have different aerobic capacities.. As did Lasse Viren..

They did raise their max Vo2 levels by doing high altitude training, a natural method. A bit like early runners running on sandy beaches to make the surface help strengthen their legs. These techniques are not banned and available to any who want to try to use them. Unlike the athletes I mentioned who injected illegal substances to improve themselves. So say everything is OK and she's allowed to compete with elevated testosterone, does that mean steroid should be allowed to be taken by the other athletes to raise themselves up to her level? Like others have said her born advantage is the same as phelps born advantage. " But it doesn't say that. There is very much a prescribed level for all sorts of substances within athletes bodies, that's why there is drug testing. The levels are set at the accept limits for what can be produced naturally within the body. The levels for testosterone differs between men and woman. Womans levels are significantly lower than mend. In this case her testosterone has previously tested as high as mens. Not at the upper limits of womans, but in the male range. This is not her fault, for her it's natural but it's caused by her chromosomes being male. The only way to overcome this massive advantage in power is to let female boxers dope themselves. Not the route I'd take and one which is currently banned. So how do you acount for her male dna, is that natural or is it an anomaly. It's not the norm and that's the sad thing for her in this case. But they don't have levels of a performance enhancing compound, testosterone, beyond that which is allowed. That's why there's drug tests, Ben Johnson, Seoul 1988 springs to mind. Unfortunately this boxer has illegal levels of testosterone and as such should not be able to compete. Mrs x They do however have a medical condition which means they grow considerably taller than people who do not have gigantism, which gives them a distinct advantage in a sport where height is very important. In what sport, you mean basketball presumably, gigantic is associated with all sorts of medical conditions such as an enlarged heart. Can you name a player, diagnosed with gigantic that has been the best in their field? Even so height is not a banned characteristic but I'm not saying it might not be an advantage. Having elevated testosterone I'd, I'm fairly certain. Mrs x Are you saying Khelis best in her field? The fact she’s been beaten numerous times would suggest that’s not the case. Back to the question though, would you ban people with a physical advantage that could lead to an advantage in a particular sport from playing that sport? Being good at sport is largely about being genetically advantaged, Michael Phelps had the longest arm span of any Olympic swimming champion ever and is the greatest swimmer of all time. Should he have been banned for having an advantage? No I'm not saying physical advantages should be banned. Mrs x" How are you gauging her power advantage? Have you examined her physically? Fought against her? As for Lance Armstrong, he deliberately took performance enhancing drugs, that was against the rules of the competition he was in, so no he should not have his victories reinstated, because he broke the rules. Imane Khelif has not broken any rules, so should be allowed to compete.

"Rebecca Adlington was on the BBC discussing how her body processed lactic acid much faster than other teammates on her GB team. Strip those two golds too I guessLactic acid gives you cramps, not a performance enhancing effect. Mrs xApologies I read produced instead. However that's a natural thing it doesn't require the dna of the opposite sex to produce. This boxer has XY chromosomes and her male dna is producing the extra testosterone. Mrs x" No I get that and it is a complicated thing. I've not seen and substantiated evidence that she actually has xy chromosomes that would be the first thing to deal with. I think the fairest outcome would be medication to reduce her testosterone levels and a set level for competition. Rather than the other boxers using peds.

As I said, Umar Kremlev of the IBA is literally the only person who has claimed this, and he's provided absolutely no further details, information or evidence. The IBA was decertified following judging and bribery scandals even before Kremlev became its president; it really shouldn't be taken as any kind of reliable source without some other corroborative confirmation.

" In regards to her having elevated testosterone in her system and you think she should be allowed to compete, does that .can you think Lance Armstrong should have his ban from cycling r Tour de France victories restored? Mrs x I don't think the comparison bears up, one cheated knowing what he illegally put in his body was designed to give him an unfair advantage and khelif just happens to have been born differently. I do think it's an issue that the relevant bodies need to sort out, and set common rules and criteria which isn't the case in her sport.. It's like saying ban some of the great runners born in high altitude countries, Ethiopia and Kenya etc as they have different aerobic capacities.. As did Lasse Viren..They did raise their max Vo2 levels by doing high altitude training, a natural method. Mrs x" No..

The IOC have confirmed that both of these female boxers failed the test used by the IBA in the press pack it gave to journalists following this incident. Quoted from The Guardian, "However the IOC’s own MyInfo website acknowledges that both boxers failed gender eligibility tests last year. "I'd understand the fuss if Imane Khelif was unbeaten but according to my limited research she's had 51 fights, won 42 (and only 6 of those by knock out) and lost 9. Hardly the record of a capable man fighting women. Angela Carini should be ashamed of herself. She quit the fight because her opponent hit her hard and then makes a statement that brings all the pitchfork handlers out in force. Should be interesting when Lin Yu-ting makes her appearance. Her record is 19 - 5, no knock outs if anyone is interested. These are NOT transgender women." I wonder if the Italian was looking to gain attention after the comments from the Italian prime minister around the opening ceremony . And then every single news report made it sound like she was trans for the clicks.

"Seriously though I think there's something that needs sorting out, if a person has the chromosomes of a man how can they be allowed to fight a woman at an Olympic event when the IBA which covers amateurs banned them..?" It needs to be addresed scientifically and dealt with by proper testing. Chromosome anomalies are really quite common and many people csn be hoing around completrly unaware of having different chromosomes to what we might traditionally expect. That does not actually mean anything. It is more complex.

"I personally don't think they should compete and the reason I'm giving this reply is because it's so difficult to say that that person is competing on an even level, ok you could say physical sports only but it's the level of difficulty measuring chromosomes and testosterone and how much of an advantage that would give, that woman was so unevenly matched in the boxing that she quit ,that could have been to make a point because she knew beforehand that her opponent had xy chromosomes and had previously not been allowed to fight in competition." Maybe by the next Olympics they sort out new categories ![]() I don’t need to go back to the start if a person is born a man which clearly this boxer was and then changed to a women for how ever many years and changed their passport so it says is a woman now is a trans person. "They should have a separate category for trans to box each other not fair on that woman having to box a trans who clearly has to much testosterone still and power could only take two punches. Maybe by the next Olympics they sort out new categories ![]() ![]() ![]() Jeez, the amount of people that can't read, let alone comprehend - mind you, given the number of folk on here who complain about people not reading profiles, I shouldn't be that surprised... ![]()

"The fighter had competed at every stage of female competition from a girl and was only banned after beating a Russian fighter in the semi in India. Once the Russian iba leader got involved. This from an event that most nations didn’t compete in due to the iba (Russian led) allowing Russian fighters to compete in. And now the Russian led iba has brought this up to create controversy from the Olympics that they are banned from. No one apart from this person has said anything about her having xy chromosomes. This is yet to be confirmed independently . And let’s not forget the iba only has one current sponsor that is also financing the Russian war on Ukraine " The IOC confirmed that both boxers failed the IBA tests. Mrs x

Which the Russians put in at the semi final stage of the Indian championships. But not before that at all the other iba tournaments.

"How is this even a story? She’s a woman. She’s always been a woman. But one spurious Russian post on Twitter wrongly accusing otherwise has turned into a global shitstorm of misinformation. It’s quite insane. Can't underestimate the degree of transphobia around currently, sadly. So debating something is now transphobia? I see. It's not transportation, she is not trans, she's a woman with male dna and subsequent high testosterone. Mrs x I’m under the impression that DSD means a female CAN have chromosomes associated with males, and vice versa, not that they DO.It's been stated she has XY chromosomes. It's that, that makes her DSD. Not that she has DSD but the state of her chromosomes is unclear. Mrs x But it has been stated by only one person, and no evidence has been provided. It's hasn't though. The president of the IBA said they failed tests but wouldn't be drawn on it, saying its confidential. So is there another 'one person' you're referring to? Also I stand by what I wrote earlier. "As for the DSD thing it's been reported in loads of mainstream media, and I'm fairly sure they will have had their copy fact checked before publication otherwise they are opening themselves up for libel. Also this athlete could simply take an independant test, clear her name and sue. But at present she hasn't, I've not even read that she's made a statement saying she hasn't got DSD but that it's just a conspiracy against her so that the world cannot see the Algerian flag raised in victory. So at present I'm going to 'trust' the mainstream media until proved otherwise." Mrs x Yes, that would s the one person, and failing the test doesn’t mean she has XY chromosomes, as you have been told before." Theyve said that she was proven to have xy chromosomes, she was born a woman but the xy chromosomes only exist in men .

But they don't have levels of a performance enhancing compound, testosterone, beyond that which is allowed. That's why there's drug tests, Ben Johnson, Seoul 1988 springs to mind. Unfortunately this boxer has illegal levels of testosterone and as such should not be able to compete. Mrs x She doesn’t have illegal amounts. Hence why she’s been in the last two Olympics . She had more than was allowed at the Indian event. Google Zhang Ziyu. The tallest woman in the world . Can’t play basketball but is playing basketball because she’s 7ft 5 she basically just stands around waiting for the ball to be thrown to her . Should she be banned I know that for these games her levels will have been tested and she will be within parameters. She will al.ost certai ly be on medication to reduce her levels to a normal level. However she has had the advantage in elevated testosterone for over 24 years. The gains she has made will not just disappear. Her Vo2 max alone will be much higher than her competitors. The power she can muster because her musculature has had raised testosterone will be higher too. It's not just the testosterone. Her condition DSD means that she has XY chromosomes. So basically, she's physically a woman but has male dna and this produces the extra testosterone. She shouldn't be allowed to compete. As for banning physical advantages, no I would not ban them, unless they produce a result such as this. If you feel she should be allowed to fight do you then think all PEDs should be allowed so that other athletes can raise their hormones to be able to compete on a level playing field? Mrs x " "Male DNA" Please remind us never to get our science information from Fab. Jesus wept. Lost brain cells reading that. She's so powerful she lost 9 professional bouts to women who don't have chromosomal or hormonal differences that fall into the DSD category. Maybe the Italian could work on putting her hands up before she enters her next "who can punch who the hardest in the face" competition. Once again, she's not being put up against kids, they're pro boxers. Your infantilisation of her opponents snacks of misogyny and your dogmatic gender policing of her snacks of racism. Bore off.

"They're not allowed to show the evidence it's private medical information. The boxers could consent to it being released though and if they're not male it would put this whole issue to bed" They could but why should they? They're eligible to be where they are and really that's all anyone needs to know

It's quite telling that they won't. The IOC criteria in this case is that it states they're female in their passports and whether or not that that's what really matters depends on whether you place any value on the safety and integrity of womens sport.

"Days prior to the competition, the Italian far right government engaged in a smear campaign against Khelif and *as admitted by Carini's trainer*, Carini embraced it, seeing herself as "paladin of a cause". Her apology tonight is a poor attempt to salvage her reputation. All of you demanding proof of her gender after she failed a test from a discredited organisation (only after she beat a Russian fighter) run by a Russian who makes Sepp Blatter look like a paragon of trustworthiness, are falling for a media narrative spin by the right. You're all having exactly the conversations they want you to have, believing the lies they want you to believe. Thick as mince, the lot of you, frankly." "1) Both of the boxers in question _oxes at the Tokyo Olympics. No-one seemed to be bothered about this back then (2021) 2) Both boxers were born female, have evidence of their births being registered as female and have lived as biological females their whole lives. 3) The chances of there being an "out there" transwoman representing Algeria are so remote so as to be fanciful. It's illegal to be trans in Algeria. There is zero legal mechanism by which birth assigned gender can be changed, so having a birth cert and passport stating "female" means the person was decreed to be female at birth. 4) People questioning the physiques of the two women in question might like to take a look at female weightlifters, throwers and also sprinters, to see the sort of muscle mass and definition that women can definitely achieve. Them having bigger biceps than the Italian woman does not mean they are secretly blokes. 5) Yu Ting Lin is 5ft 9in but only 57kg. She is much taller than most women in that weight category so she has extremely long arm reach, which is a huge advantage. 6) Why is it always women having to provide extremely intimate medical details in public to prove themselves? We are literally asking these women to show some inspector what the very fabric of their being is made from and what is inside their knickers. I recall the abuse Serena Williams used to get from people falsely trying to claim she wasn't female because she her physique and level of power. " 1. They hadn't failed gender eligibility tests at that point. 2. People with 46XY 5-ARD are often raised as female especially in more developing countries. 3. This is a red-herring. Likely DSD not trans. 4. Physique isn't the real issue, the androginisation effects of testerone during male puberty are. 5. Also if went through male puberty will lb for lb have significantly more punching power. 6. Firstly because there is no advantage in pretending to be a man in sport. No one was seriously questioning Serena just cranks. If it weren't for the fact a sporting body is on record as stating the 2 boxers failed such a test there would no serious questioning. All it takes is a buccal swab test, theres no embarrassing intimate exam by an inspector as you're implying.

All it takes is a buccal swab test, theres no embarrassing intimate exam by an inspector as you're implying." I don't recall anyone ever seriously questioning Serena? Maybe I missed that bit. Even if they did.. Different issue different sport. They "question" it as its the rules of the sport and they are trying to keep the sport fair and safe. Which most participants are very thankful for.

"Ahh, I did wonder how some would square their bloodthirsty desire to see someone with male characteristics cause harm to women and victim shaming…but I forgot that it’s always the fault of the far right. Wake up folks, this is boxing we’re talking about. Not rowing, not swimming, not the shot putt. People get hurt, sometimes beyond repair. That one participant has a significant physical advantage is dangerous, regardless of whether she’s any good or not" 6 knockouts in 51 fights 🤣🤣🤣

It's all just been split lips and grazed cheeks (and bitten off ears)? Evie

"The transphobia on this thread appalls me. She is a woman, has always been a woman, was born and raised as a woman. The number of people born with an intersex condition is around 1/100 births. The vast majority of those are like in this case a chromosome anomaly that doesn’t affect external genitalia… so the figure is estimated to be even higher as most people don’t undergo chromosome testing without there being an obvious medical reason. That’s around 670,000 people in the uk alone who are intersex. Not a small figure. Stop being so bloody narrow minded." I agree with this!
