its a serious subject guys being jokey about it does not help prostate problems for men is huge its not just cancer checks ... its affects far too many men who fail to realize whats going on in their own bodies... not a jokey topic in truth men should be encouraging fellow men to get check rather than finger n bum jokes

remember its not just about cancer

The digit test is no more .. it’s done via blood test. I’ve just had mine done. Minor concern, another 6th month test to see if things have changed.

I hope this goes well for you, I recall it being done via bloods too, and absolutely - whatever sex we are, regular checks on anything are very important for early diagnosis and action.

Apparently, it feels like a walnut. If you're frequently digging around in someone's bum you might feel if anything changes.

Thank you all … I had an MRI and it was inconclusive. The consultant said that even if they did exploratory surgery now and confirmed early stages, it would be too early to treat .. hence 6 months review

I know this will be a worry, but at least it's a managed worry, which is a much better problem to have.

Good you and your medical team are ahead of this .

Early diagnosis is the crucial part. It’s very treatable if identified early. Try not to let it worry you. If the MRI saw anything the doc was concerned about you’d know.

The prostate gland sits just under the diaphragm and bladder and surrounds the urethra; the wee-tube.

You may, or may not, be able to feel the back of it yourself. Lie on your side with your knees bent. It should feel like a smooth walnut.

The gland often doesn’t stop growing, and most men will suffer from an enlarged prostate if they live long enough. This is called “Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia”, (B.P.H.), and it gradually blocks the wee-tube. This makes weeing and bladder emptying difficult, and increases the number of visits to the loo, especially at night. You can have an operation to reduce the gland if normal life becomes difficult.

The symptoms of prostate cancer are much the same as for B.P.H., but the back of the gland feels “lumpy” – not a smooth curve.

The Prostate-Specific Antigen (P.S.A.) blood test assesses the prostate gland activity – big gland = high P.S.A. level. This will probably indicate B.P.H., but may be due to cancer. The older you get, the higher your P.S.A. level may be. The “normal range” of test results is age-related.

Hope this helps.

The PSA test is a blood test to help detect prostate cancer. But it's not perfect and will not find all prostate cancers.

The test, which can be done at a GP surgery, measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood.

PSA is a protein made only by the prostate gland. Some of it leaks into your blood, but how much depends on your age and the health of your prostate.

There's currently no national screening programme for prostate cancer in the UK because the PSA test is not always accurate.

Before deciding to have the PSA test, you may want to talk to a GP and practice nurse, as well as your partner or a friend or family member.

You have a higher risk of prostate cancer if you:

have a family history of prostate cancer

are of black ethnic origin

are overweight or obese

My nan’s spare room.

I had mine checked a few months back, had both blood test and physical examination.

I have an enlarged prostate typical with age but thankfully not cancer.

Having the check done provides clarity.

I had a nice young lady GP give me a digit test recently. I resisted the urge to say "take your time, love". Two friends have had digit tests more recently. So it's alive and well.

Asked the Doc about it at least ten years ago he said with no family history of cancer don't worry about it as the psa test is so reliable the stress from a high test is more dangerous than the cancer or words to that effect, not seen the doc since have sent them several emails asking about it over the last few years but don't get a reply, the local surgery is like the marie celeste, try and ring you are fourth in line 2 hours later you are still forth in line get fed up and go in there the receptionist sends you packing telling you to ring or email for an appointment or sign up to an app on the phone that even my kids can't get to work.

the blood test can apparently give a false positive so some GPs are reluctant use without symptoms.
