Should shops be closed on a sunday?

Who else agrees that it should be closed on a sunday? I never do any shopping on sundays. I think it is a good idea to have one day a week with no trading, imagine how tranquil it would be when going out

If you want to make the other days even busier, limit the flexibility of Mon to Fri workers and put a dent in the retail economy, yeah it's a great idea

No!

I think that any shop or business should be able to open whatever hours they choose on any day of the week.

Early closing on a sunday is enough of a pain, especially for being unable to get something in an emergency.

No, this is a whole new world that’s on the go 24/7.

What possible purpose would Sunday closing have. It’s something from the past. May as well stay there.

No way. It’s already ridiculous that most of the retail in the UK close around 5 pm just as everyone is finishing work. Shops should be open day & night 7 days a week like in most other countries.

Sunday closing was something based on religious requirements and something linked to only ONE religion.

We are not a religious country,in a 2018 survey 52% of british people said they had No Religion, and a further 9% said they were Athiest.

somewhere

I'm so old I remember when the shops were closed on a Sunday and half day closing on a wednesday, I remember if I had a birthday on a Saturday and had some money to burn I'd have to wait until Monday to spend it (usually I have to wait until the Saturday to catch a bus into town), it was such an awful time for a tween to have some money and not spend it, life seemed simple back then but like everything the world has changed and while I agree shops should be closed on Christmas day and boxing day, Sunday opening should stay as it is.

While I do most of my shopping online (see, world has changed, if you had told me 30 odd years ago I could order some kitchen scales at 9am and they be delivered by 6pm I would never have believed you), lots of people still prefer physical shops and for some items you do need to go in person for I think, with working hours for many being shifts, etc I make sense for shops to be open 7 days a week.

As for early closing on a Sunday, it doesn't really bother me that much, I think it's part of the charm of living here that we still have this "quirky law" that you have to make sure if you want a roast dinner and you don't have a Tesco local available, you have gone to the shops by 3.30 lol x

No I do not agree that shops should close on a Sunday.

Why Sunday? Is that a subconscious , arbitrary choice.... ? I doubt it.

You say it will be nice and quiet if you go out. Great..... where will you go ?

If the shops close on Sunday , let's close the pubs, the swimming pools, the cinemas, the hospitals , the golf courses , the bowling alley , the doctors....... etc etc etc

Let's make it really quiet.

Oh ...... and lets CLOSE the internet and the dining room in your house, plus your kitchen and T.V. ......

Nope. Another person old enough to remember Sunday and Wednesday pm closures, and have recently been to places that have restrictions on what you can buy on a Sunday. It's a pain in the ass. We live in a largely secular society in 2024 (or religions other than Christianity have other practices) so it's a totally outmoded concept. Make everything 24/7 where demand sustains it please

Last time it was voted on in parliament… as it’s not the church that makes the decision… it was mostly the Scottish MPs that voted not to extend Sunday trading laws in England…. Which on every level is wrong tbh.

Sunday is pretty much the only day I do my shopping on, food, clothing etc. I also think New Year’s Day shops should be closed and perhaps a few of the spring/summer bank holidays.

Doctors, Dentists and Pharmacists are all ALLOWED to be open 24hrs, except for Sundays when the Pharmacy must close early.

Being allowed to open 24/7 doesn't mean that they HAVE to be open.

Since Covid, none of the supermarkets around us open 24hrs any more, despite being allowed to.

No.

I remember when shops all closed on a Sunday and many had a half day closing on a Wednesday.

Not everyone works a 9-5 Monday to Friday job. Many work shifts and being able to go to the shop on their day off is important.

However, I do think supermarkets shouldn't be able to sell alcohol, or that it should be restricted. Controversial I know. But if alcohol was only available in off licenses and pubs, that would not only help pubs but also live music. Both of which are in the decline.

Sunday closing was a protection to shop employees under the shop act 1950 and 1994. Most likely to give shop employees rights to a day off for religious meetings.

modern age working with shift patterns negate the need for these laws. Plus religion isn't in the forefront of politics like it once one.

The half day closing is a council law thing from 1904. Again old and antiquated law for the modern age.

It’s not possible anymore, as a previous comment has said, the genie is out now. I was working in Supermarkets when it first came in and we were offered double pay. I knew that would end after a few years and new contracts would be offered. So I left the sector and moved to what I’m currently doing now.

I’m all for extending the hours but only with a better deal for the workers. Not just more pay but better benefits and make working in a supermarket a more desirable occupation.

August 1994 - I was opposed to it as thought workers would be forced to work on Sunday (which for some may be the only proper day with their children - plus I do not like the large stores). However, I am a hypocrite and just today have been to B&Q, Pets@Home and Tesco

Any shop should be able to trade whatever days and times suit it. Night opening hours possibly subject to local rules regarding night-time noise or other nuisance to local residents. However no shop worker should be forced to work on Sunday, or whatever other day might have religious or cultural significance to them, unless this was specified in their terms at the time they were employed.

Eg. It should be fine for a shop to specifically advertise for Sunday workers, but someone that had been employed for say a Tuesday to Saturday week should not then be forced to switch to different days. Of course the worker might voluntarily change days (with possible overtime or bonus payments) but not be summarily dismissed for not doing.

Sundays used to be a "special" day because of special significance in the christian religions, at the time when the UK was officially a "Christian" country. Now however the law has to recognise the fact that fewer than 5% of the population attend christian churches on Sundays; IKEA might well be a more popular "place of worship"...

Being selfemployed the days of the week have little meaning to me. Its either a day I'm working or I'm not. So the days I'm not working i would want shops to be open, pretty useless if they are closed.

And as for the god botherers reasons why they should be closed...fuck em, go back to the dark ages where ypu belong.

"How about we bin off trading on Sundays and have a 4 day working week.

How nice would that be "

Noooooooo. People would expect me to socialise more.

I like work.

All shops closed on a Sunday here. Even the tesco. Only pubs and churches open. Saints and sinners.

Are we talking all shops or just the multinationals?

There's a huge difference between closing Tesco's on a Sunday and expecting a small corner shop to close.

For some who have to keep their business open 7 days a week it's not a conversation they want to be involved in.

Tesco's have already gone from being open 24 hours to a 6 to midnight approach and then with no warning or signage update are now only open from 7 to 11.

Every one of their stores still has a huge sign saying 6-midnight despite the fact this hasn't been the case for 6 or 8 months if not longer.

Sounds idyllic.

High street are struggling enough. Without being closed on Sunday.

Several large retailers challenged the legal ruling in force before 1994 by opening on Sundays (or simply ignored them, since the fines were far lower than their Sunday profits), and the outcome was that the Sunday Trading Act 1994 permitted "large shops" – those with a "relevant floor area" in excess of 280 m2.

Only automated self service shops so at least the staff needn’t work on Sundays.

It would possibly lead to higher prices on products in todays world. Most shops now open Sundays and trade well. If closed on Sundays they still pay rent and service costs and a day less trading. I'm certain it would lead to a fall overall in income so putting pressure on the standing costs. Just a thought.

Also remember my time many years ago in Scandinavia and shops closing Saturday mid day. That felt very strange.

Working in supply chain 100% yes. A day off would be great all those who say no try working any 5 from 7 3 shifts.

I used to work in a real job Saturday was time and half, Sunday double. Now it’s just another working day.

Bank holidays are a thing of the past too.

Mind you they can’t even close Boxing Day so no hope of Sundays.

I mean you go in before Xmas and it’s mobbed people with full trolley’s then the fuckers are back after the shop is shut for 1 day.

If you want to also have no event places open, nobody minding the power station, no emergency services, no pubs and restaurants, no garden centres...its now a 24/7 365 country not the 1950's, why restrict the days the people who work all hours in those environments for your convenience can do their shopping for your convenience?

I first encountered them in the West Indies when I wondered why some small businesses were closed on Saturdays.

They get two sabbatical days off at weekends, theirs on Saturday and other religions' on Sundays. Win, win!

No. With shift patterns and working days being so varied these days those that need a Sunday to ‘run as normal’ would miss out potentially… the working week isn’t as mon - fri anymore
