From what I read they did consider that but the potential sanctions for the team going forward ruled that out..

Polatics-Sport

Oil-Water

The two shouldn't ever mix, but, unfortunately they do. When they do, the outcome is always disastrous.

I admire their principles but they should have put their differences aside.

This is, of course, my personal opinion.

Care to say why they refused? Or just post half a story, as usual?

The reason is they in advance of the game, players and management from the Israeli team accused the Irish team of being anti-Semitic, so the Irish team refused to engage in the usual pleasantries like exchanging gifts and shaking hands.

The accusations of anti-semitism came in interviews, press conferences and posts on the Israeli basketball website.

Tom, when posting stories like this, please post the full story and be fair.

Sorry, I’ve just read an article.

It was the Israelis who were accusing Ireland , saying “it’s no secret et that the Irish are quite antisemitic” on their official website before the match.

I say well done to them.

The whole World seems to be saying to Israel stop the atrocities in Gaza and the West Bank etc, yet doing nothing constructive about it. Israel itself didn't exist until 1948, when it was formed as a puppet state for the West in the Middle East. And have trod down on the Arabs ever since. So infact Palestin has been occupied since 1948. The Israelis have been persecuting the Palestinians ever since.

I remember off the top of my head, the Black hand salute by black athletes in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The USA would not participate in the 1980 Olympics, as it was held in the USSR. Then who can forget Apartheid.

I'm afraid as an earlier poster stated, Politics is an everyday thing in one form or another, so can not be separated from Sport.

Would it be an issue if the Irish team had a photoshoot with Irish Paramilitaries? After all the UDA & IRA were formed to protect their homeland as were the IDF, and even the PLO for that matter

Nope! Only if you allow it. Let’s see:

coaching … nope

online shopping … nope

cinema … nope

listening to vinyl … nope

walking the dog … nope

cooking, eating … nope

working out … nope

taking out the bins … nope

Nope, can’t see politics anywhere except when I go looking for it. And not shaking hands, personal choice. Is it political, maybe, again only if you want it to be.

coaching … why does coaching exist? Is it to win, or is it to improve the life, attitude and social ability of the coachee?

online shopping … what is the impact of online shopping on society?

cinema … social and political themes have always existed in cinema. Think starship troopers was a fun sci-Fi jaunt?

listening to vinyl … Music and politics are inexorably linked.

walking the dog … Where do you walk the dog? Open spaces, clean paths, safe streets?

cooking, eating … How does food get on your plate? Where was it grown? How much did it cost to get here? What was the environmental impact of it? How do our eating habits need to change to combat the ever increasing global population?

working out … Why does someone work out? What happens if they’re unable to due to job pressures? What is the impact to society and the economy of people live longer, healthier lives?

taking out the bins … who pays your bins to be taken away? What happens if services are cut? Why should we be more wary of waste?

Politics *is* everywhere oven if we don’t think of it.

" Politics is in every aspect of life..

I don't really know enough about coaching to comment. but ...

" online shopping … nope"

What's the VAT on certain types of goods?

Are there laws on what goods can be sold online?

Where do the big companies base their headquarters?

What are the rules for postal deliveries?

All political issues.

" cinema … nope. "

What hours is the cinema allowed to open?

What proportion of their revenue is taxed?

What age can you start working in a cinema?

What films can (and can't) be shown?

Are there age limits on films types?

What happens if a cinema doesn't follow age guidelines for films?

All political issues.

" listening to vinyl … nope

walking the dog … nope

cooking, eating … nope

working out … nope

taking out the bins … nope. "

If you haven't been following my argument, I'll go on, but in a more succinct fashion.

Are there rules on lyrics in music?

Who enforces them?

Are dogs allowed in the children's park?

Does your dog have to wear a muzzle?

What happens if it bites someone?

Eating out? What's the hygiene rating and who checks?

Eating in? What hours are certain sized shops allowed to be open?

What food types are subject to import/export rules?

What food types are subject to VAT or subsidies?

Working out at home? Is your kit subject to VAT?

Can anyone become a personal trainer?

(Just thought of a coaching one, can coaches have previous convictions? If so, what for? Anything??)

Are your bins collected weekly or bi weekly?

Are there laws on when you can put them out?

Are there laws on what they can contains?

Nope! Can't avoid politics in any of those issues, even when I'm not really looking for it.

Was the late Queen deciding to shake hands with Martin McGuiness a personal choice or a political choice?

6 players didnt but they had to field a team as they would have been fined 80k and banned from the next tournament.

Basketball Ireland said it would set them back years and effect the next generation of players if they refused to play. I think they have to play them again in Dublin too.

I think it was more than likely an act of principle totally, the principle being that those who manage and play now are only the custodians of the sport..

They are the ones that inspire others to have a go and may well use that sport as a means to develop..

Therefore the decision to not risk the long term negative consequences that a financial penalty could bring and they made the point they wanted to is probably the right thing..

Politics has always been part of sport, anyone remember maradonna's hand of god justification as revenge for the Falklands islands, or the black panther salute at the 1972 Olympics, those athletes despite being the best were never allowed to represent the US again.

To think politics is not related to sport is naive and frankly historically inaccurate. I salute the Irish team for taking a stand for humanity. Much more balls than sunak or starmer.
