Firstly I apologise for this feeling sorry for myself post and not sure I'm posting in the right place but......

Why do we get so attached to our beloved pets when we know that it's going to lead to heartache one day?

I had to put my loyal companion to sleep yesterday and it's one of the hardest things I've ever done, so why do we do it to ourselves

I'm very sorry for your loss and the heartache of it. It's partly why I hesitate to get a pet at this time.

We do it because of the joy they bring us whilst they are with us and the wonderful memories they leave when they depart.

I work with animals everyday. It’s really tough and it’s only right that you feel sad. Just try and remember the good bits.

I actually dread the day anything happens to my dog. However their unconditional love, their ability to make even the worst days better and the years of memories make it so worthwhile.

I did see a picture of a vets surgery with chocolate drops on the counter, on it the label read

"No dog should go to heaven without knowing what chocolate tastes like"

Sorry for your loss … it’s never easy. As to why we do it? Perhaps ‘cos in their short lives, we come to feel and appreciate the unconditional warmth and companionship derived during that bond. They pass, we grieve, but their little paws have made their mark on our hearts…

And choosing to bring another pet into your life just adds to those paw prints rather than replace them.

I have to say I'm fairly pragmatic when it comes to animal loss when it happens naturally.

I had 2 cats, one I found passed in the hall one day. I was sad of course but I understood his time was shorter than mine and he was old and his world had become so small due to no longer being able to go outside. It was a small blessing to know he had left his ailing body behind.

Years later the second one had also had her world shrink die to failing eyesight and a tendancy to get locked in the church hall over night she however clung on until one day I could tell she'd had enough. I picked her up and she slumped against me as if to say 'mum, I'm tired....I'm done'. That trip to the vets was awful. I cried the whole way there listening to her feeble meow. Carrying her up the stairs and handing her over was unbearable.

I quite often say it's a good thing to be able to choose to end suffering in a pet. Something we cannot do for loved ones. In reality it's awful knowing why you're taking them to the vet and not being able to tell them why. I can only hope that as their aches and pains subside as they cross over they get it and can see it was from love.

We had to go through this just before Christmas and now the house feels empty so much so we are thinking of selling up.

Feel your pain and loss but they will always provide you with great Happy memories

hugs ..my cat had to go to the rainbow Bridge 5 years ago, she was almost 19 and was going downhill with kidney failure x

One reason I don't have a pet. I had a cat visiting most days (even if rain) for 5 years. I never fed her and she slept in garden if warm enough or came in for a fuss and warmth. She stopped a few months ago and probably passed on or moved. A shame as things are not the same without seeing her at the door.

My condolences OP. It's never easy to lose something that's a huge part of your life and essentially family.

I've not seen my dogs in months and that's been incredibly difficult to deal with. I've had nightmares revolving around them and have no means of checking on their welfare, despite them being 15 minutes down the road.

I've thought about getting another dog, but it would be unfair on it due to my work and in my head I'd feel guilty for in some way trying to replace the ones that as far as I know are alive and well.

I doubt I'll consider getting another pet for years, unless circumstances change massively.

Though it may hurt terribly to take leave of them, our lives are immeasurably enriched by our time with them. To love is to open ourselves up to the pain of loss and regret. Not to love is to deny ourselves an integral part of living.

They'll be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.
