In some regards it’s always happened.

A lot of television and bill board advertising has used someone “famous” to sell a product or to endorse it.

It’s just more wide reaching now due to the internet

What we bought used to be decided by middle-aged while male advertising executives in board rooms.

Now what we buy is decided by people like us who use social media effectively.

I know which one I prefer.

I don’t think they are stupid. Most probably very clever. Found a market where they can endorse and make money for themselves.

I saw somewhere once that Paris Hilton owned 3 of the top 20 companies in America. Not sure if this is still the case.

Did having her name help her, most probably.

Did she see that as an opportunity to empower herself and earn a great living, definitely.

I don’t have any issues with people “influencing” from an advertising point of view.

Media has done it for years and years on tv programmes etc

Couldn’t agree more

Can’t stand them

Trouble is they will always be around because a certain % of people are followers

Some are highly influenced by advertising

Others not so much

And some not at all

I think (well hope) they mean influencers who have no knowledge about a topic. I don't even mean specialist knowledge....just any knowledge.

I'll have an opinion on most things if asked. Sometimes it'll be ill informed, sometimes it'll be something I know a lot about or passionate about.

It's where people stir up controversy (or you could argue they are creating awareness) but their opinion for their own benefit rather than as a discussion point.

If someone is well read on a topic, studied it, or lived it.

Anyone of those three I'd be happy with.

But....and like j-lo it's a big butt, I don't really know a definitive answer to that. But that would be my expectation.

Good historians will always say that what they are taking about is basen on facts know to them at the time and will tell you what they infer/assume but have no solid proof of. History is no different from other fields of science in its constant re-examination of facts and assumptions. Fact-checking historians and their biases is a worthy pursuit, but you we're asking me if I watched history documentaries. Social media is like any other media.

Take television, there are good programmes and there are bad, which you choose is based on your perception. A hard hitting and factual documentary or a cheesy reality show, your choice.

The same with newspapers, pick your bias.

The ‘influencers’ are a broad spread from those with real knowledge of a subject to those with an opinion, sometimes not even their own.

They just choose a different platform.

The trick is in deciding what you want to watch, although sometimes it’s difficult to filter due to the way it’s delivered to us.

My dad is heavily influenced by the newspaper he reads. It reinforces his opinions rather than forms them though. I think 'influencers ' do the same thing, most of us already have opinions and will gravitate towards media that confirms rather than challenges them.

That’s always an interesting argument - are we drawn to media because it reflects the beliefs we already hold or are our beliefs driven by the media as a whole?

Personally I think our beliefs and opinions are shaped by every influence on us. Family, friends, life experience, media etc. I believe we do gravitate towards people and media that reinforce what we already think, it's a rare person who will seek out differing opinions and is prepared to have their beliefs challenged.

Both. Some people don't have their own opinions so they adopt opinions of the group they want to associate with. It's a survival technique exploited by media, businesses, politicians, and influencers.

I anwsered above, I check their academic credentials, publications, and I do read, see, listen to other experts from that field. How much checking I do depends on how important what they are saying, writing is to my life or work. In general, if I see a post or video by someone with no creds teasing me with "You would not believe what Ancient Romans did to delay global warming" then I know they are trying to milk the current talking point and redirect some attention to the ads served with their "content". BTW. I make a distinction between content and knowledge.

What we bought used to be decided by middle-aged while male advertising executives in board rooms.

Now what we buy is decided by people like us who use social media effectively.

I know which one I prefer.

I’m not talking about product

I’m talking about social issues

What kind of social issues don’t you like influencers talking about?

I regularly appear on social media channel talking about social issues related to my field, so I’m curious.

Any

Pro nouns

Racism

LGBQT ect ect

Mental health

It’s frightening what some of these idiots think, let alone tell others what to think

If you are qualified in your field

That’s fine

Most aren’t

What’s wrong with people talking about pronouns, LGBTQ, racism etc?"

Depends what’s being said ?

"In some regards it’s always happened.

A lot of television and bill board advertising has used someone “famous” to sell a product or to endorse it.

It’s just more wide reaching now due to the internet

But they were already celebrities

These Tik Tok people are no body "

Correct and of course they are also entitled, full of their own importance and throw pathetic little hissie fits when refused free merchandise on the strength of their own inflated status - I know which one I prefer.

There are certainly upsides and downsides to the democratisation of the internet, and allowing anyone to say anything they want to.

Including the politicisation of freedom of speech, and people thinking that people who agree with them are entitled to freedom of speech, and people who disagree with them are not.

I agree with your sentiment here, I'd rather somebody like us show us products that interest us.

But considering influencers make money from pushing products can we actually trust their opinion more than any other advertiser?

Genuine question, I don't watch influencers.

Or is your reply aimed more at influencers that are in a particular niche that we can trust are passionate about that niche and its products?

Influencers?

There are “journalists” like Jeremy Clarkson given free rein to opine on whatever they choose in national media, should they be banned? At the end of the day they are taking money and spouting their opinion.

I of course can choose to read it or ignore it. Same as anyone else on social media.

The simple fact is that the media don’t like “influencers” or internet celebrities because people can create their own audience without approval, endorsement or to satisfy a major donor/shareholder etc.

It takes a lot of effort for any of these people to garner those audiences.

Mr Beast is an influencer, as is KSI. They worked hard at creating content that people wanted to watch. They also do a lot of good with the money they generate.

More power to them.

Anyone can do it, just need to decide whether you are going to put the effort in to do it.

And yes there can only be so many “internet famous” types, but for some with meagre followings by comparison to the above mentioned they can certainly generate income.

I had a client at age 21 who was pulling in £11-20k a month depending on hits/views etc from ad revenues alone for his YouTube videos. He was a specialist in his field, he made content people wanted to watch, not enough for it to be on a major TV network, but enough for an audience on YT worldwide to give him a very nice lifestyle.

Enough that he had to move to US to be able to hire videographers and assistants who could help him produce content as he couldn’t get the staff here.

I sat in a room with him once and heard him turn down £10,000 just to feature a product on his show because he didn’t use the product so wouldn’t endorse it.

I also heard him turn down £3k from a company whose products he did endorse because making the video in collaboration with them would reduce revenues from other ads on his channel.

Like I say clever people who have found a niche.

More power to them.

Everyone you watch and follow is most likely an influencer. Actors, musicians, reporters, food critics and all types of entertainers.

There's absolutely no point moaning about "influencers" bc the people put them there. They have enough followers to weild influence.

If you don't like a particular influencer and their popularity then there's an easy and simple remedy: ignore them. Dont follow them. Focus on your favourites who are probably influencers themselves. And they have others moaning about them as you are doing.

Influencers in general don't annoy me because I'm not their target audience and I'm not influenced by them.

If they are benefiting and earning a living from it so be it.

The only thing that does bug me about some of them is when they believe their own press and think that everyone should know who they are.

The ones who expect hotels to comp them or the ones who think they don't have to pay for food or clothing and can get away with anything simply because they can publicise it and put their own spin on every story.

I don’t see the big deal. Unless you go looking for them (or what they are selling/influencing) then they are pretty easy to avoid.

If they have the desire to make money and do something about earning that money rather than sitting and chatting shit about it, then more power to them. It’s enterprising. It’s a business.

We just don’t seem to like people who are self made in this Country.

"The TikTok influencer who was on the celebrity jungle , how is she a celebrity, and it goes to show how out of touch with reality some people are , glad I don’t have any social media platforms "

The thing is it’s people who think that the influencers aren’t celebrities that are the ones who are out of touch with reality. Influencers can have hundreds of thousands, even millions of fans and in total their output can have views that total billions, for one person. The people we consider celebrities, because they are on the TV, would kill for that sort of exposure, and the money that goes with it.

I’m not a fan of influencers, but to dismiss them because we aren’t the people they are aiming their content at is very stupid.

Yeah, it feels very much to me like "these talkies will never take over, silent films forever!" from Singing in the Rain or something.

Companies get people to advertise their products (including political views, as we found out with the defamation case, Reform are paying Fox a quarter of a million a year). People try to persuade you they really think that way, skirting regulation which tries to catch up.

It's just the same shit in a different decade.

Yep, social media, influencers, and other internet based mediums are, like garlic bread, the future (and to a large extent the present). Trying to deny it is very old man shouts at clouds.
